A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. (MsLatte is a Her Private Life reference.) Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of Dramabus (non subscription, maybe dodgy) and AmazonPrime.

The previous thread is here, but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads:

Shows marked with asterisk(s) are more uniformly loved or admired.

In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller, crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

Not Korean but just try it

Regulars occasionally branch out into Japanese, Taiwanese and Chinese drama. The Chinese & Taiwanese stuff is much more variable quality-wise, so we’ve noted anything decent here:

Love O2O (Viki - Chinese)
Morning Call (Netflix - Japanese)

We have some lovely occasional posters with links to Korea who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references. (Although its possible we have scared them all away since our early threads with the fangirling. If you’re still reading, please say hi.)

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too dense to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the arse to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together or an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Lee Jong-Suk (LJS), Park Min Young (PMY), Ji Chang Wook (JCW) and his hotness Kim Jae Wook (HH KJW). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

I've just watched Superclap twice in a row, that's going to be my headphone jam tomorrow. It's odd seeing Siwon dancing around as I think of him as an actor primarily.

helloswellow · 31/10/2019 21:21

I love Super Junior rabbit holes! Here's the honorary mention to Super Junior T - their trot sub group, Super Junior H - their 'happy' sub group and Super Junior M - their sub group that debuted in China. All have since disappeared but do have a few good songs.

boatyard I knew I had heard the tune before! Maybe that's why it gets stuck in my head.

boatyardblues · 31/10/2019 22:33

DS1 asked why I was waving at the telly when Siwon came on. DS2 had to explain it’s like Wallace’s cheese excitement jazzhands in Wallace & Gromit. Cue a solid 10 mins mickey-taking...

Bea · 31/10/2019 23:37

Ahhh! Just finished You're All Surrounded... It was really really good with a cracking storyline which kept me guessing all the way! Great baddies! Lovely goodies! A great fun binge! And lovely heartfelt moments!... Worth a look if you want some straightforward drama!! 👍👍👍👍😁

Bea · 31/10/2019 23:38

Bonus! It had lovely lovely Eunuch Jo in from Crowned Clown... Playing lovely lovely Detective Lee! 😍

boatyardblues · 01/11/2019 00:35

I must go back to it, Bea. I started watching for LSG after Korean Odyssey, but couldn’t get past Korean Knightly. I will persevere. Fighting!

Must go to bed now. Got stuck in a Doctors vortex, just crawling out now.

I look shocking today, something to do with not sleeping until 2:30am due to DDTD delayed immersion Shock

After a dodgy start it just completely took over! I've watched 14 episodes in 2 days

Just stopped for lunch and itching to finish it before DH gets back home as promised him a KDrama free evening Wink

boatyardblues · 01/11/2019 14:22

Ha! Another kdrama wreck here, although I turned in just after 1pm. I’m planning an afternoon nap when I get home - just finishing a splendid lunch.

bettys · 01/11/2019 15:23

Aesops I was just the same with DDTD and binged it over a weekend

helloswellow · 01/11/2019 17:58

I love finding a good binge watch. Usually find that binge watching means I notice minor flaws a lot less and find it easy to really get into the story.

boatyardblues · 01/11/2019 18:14

I have finished Doctors. I liked it but I didn’t love it. What now?

OP posts:
AesopsMables · 01/11/2019 18:51

Bettys - so glad I persevered with it, although I hadn't realised it was 24 episodes! Thought it would be easy to sneak in the final 2 later tonight. Not so. Thank goodness for rugby (DH otherwise occupied) and rain (justifies staying indoors) all weekend Grin

helloswellow · 01/11/2019 19:02

boatyard what are you feeling?

bettys · 01/11/2019 19:05

Aesops priorities and all that...you know you're hooked when you're looking at the weather reports and rugby schedules with an eye to how much kdrama you can squeeze in!!

Is it me or should there be a new episode of Vagabond? I am nearly at the end of Signal and am wanting a fluffy binge watch. Should I go back to You're All Surrounded? Or try & find Mad Dog?

bettys · 01/11/2019 19:09

Netflix keeps suggesting I watch Sky Castle but I don't fancy it somehow....

By the way if anyone else is watching, Extraordinary You is still my pick of the week for the on-air shows.

helloswellow · 01/11/2019 19:29

I'm struggling to keep up with my on air shows right now. There's one I'm watching with a new episode every day but viki puts out episodes at odd times and sometimes 7 at once then the next week it's one every day so I think im caught up but never am.

It does mean I've always got dramas to watch so that's a plus but it's hell for scheduling.

boatyardblues · 01/11/2019 19:33

boatyard what are you feeling?

I feel like I just spent the last week mainlining televisual Pringles, so something a bit more substantial. No more doctors. Not froth. I basically want something well written and engaging like Because This Is My First Life, but don’t we all?

OP posts:
bettys · 01/11/2019 19:43

boatyard Signal is quality but perhaps a little too close in subject matter to Tunnel

boatyardblues · 01/11/2019 19:53

That might do me. I’ll have a look later. Thanks Betty.

Bea · 01/11/2019 21:06

Extraordinary You have read really good things... Are you watching on boobage site?..

Looking fwd to Vagabond this eve...

Will catch up on melting as well!

Bea · 01/11/2019 21:07

Boatyard... Yes! Signal is really good... (need to get back to it!).... 👍

Bea · 01/11/2019 21:08

I've watched sky Castle on and off... Dd was watching it.... Looked good but annoying!... Annoying characters! It seemed to be very soapy!!

Bea · 01/11/2019 21:11

Aaaargh! No new ep of Vagabond!! 😭😭😭😭

bettys · 01/11/2019 21:48

Bea watching Extraordinary You on dramafast, no boobage fingers crossed

I am peeves there’s no new episode of Vagabond
