A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. (MsLatte is a Her Private Life reference.) Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of Dramabus (non subscription, maybe dodgy) and AmazonPrime.

The previous thread is here, but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads:

Shows marked with asterisk(s) are more uniformly loved or admired.

In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller, crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

Comedy (with a side order of absurd)

I picked up a celebrity on the street (Viki)
My Fellow Citizens (Viki)

Come and Hug Me (Dramafast)

Guilty Pleasures (for the joy, not the quality)
Hwarang (Viki/Netflix)
The Last Empress (Viki)
Sassy Go Go (Netflix)

Mad as a box of frogs/uncategorisable
Strong Girl Bong Soon (Netflix)

Not Korean but just try it

Regulars occasionally branch out into Japanese, Taiwanese and Chinese drama. The Chinese & Taiwanese stuff is much more variable quality-wise, so we’ve noted anything decent here:

Love O2O (Viki - Chinese)
Morning Call (Netflix - Japanese)

We have some lovely occasional posters with links to Korea who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references. (Although its possible we have scared them all away since our early threads with the fangirling. If you’re still reading, please say hi.)

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too dense to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the arse to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together or an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Lee Jong-Suk (LJS), Park Min Young (PMY), Ji Chang Wook (JCW) and his hotness Kim Jae Wook (HH KJW). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

Bettys!... Woo hoo! 100 days is coming to viki! Huzzah! I stopped watching in the hope this would happen! You've got your finger on the kdrama pulse!!👍👍

Taking a break from flower Crew.. It needs to get going!... I've discovered what makes me watch a drama avidly... (along with obvs storyline and visuals!... Ahem! 😉😳)... I have to really love the secondary characters!.. Thus the reason Melting is just OK for me at the moment... The secondary characters... I don't really care about them!...🤔🤔

After haphazardly skippitydoodah - ing my way through "you're all surrounded" on netflix a while ago (the draw was lovely priest to be Ahn Jae Hyun!) I decided to watch it properly as Vagabond Lee Seung Gi is in it... Along with Korea Knightly Go Ara... And.... It's really good... It's a good binger... A bit of stand alone cases that need to be solved and a traumatic storyline (is there any other?) hidden identities... Childhood friends... Murder... Running through... Good fun! On ep 10 and tripping along very nicely... Needed something modern day...

I've watched far too much historical at the moment! I even predicted what characters would say in Flower Crew the other evening!... 😳😱🤣
JOENHA!!.... Debi Mama!... Aigoo!

AesopsMables · 30/10/2019 15:12

Finished Sec Kim last night
Ending did drag a bit but FL so pretty and her fathers character kept my attention

Righty ho, what next?!

Fluffy comedy I think, so will revert to the front list and have a scan through Smile

Boatyard my rice cooker already delivered today but going to christen it at the weekend when I have time to experiment

bettys · 30/10/2019 16:12

For some reason Bea I read that as Debbie Harry and has a moments discombobulation!

I am tempted by the rice cooker but don’t think I can justify the counter space or cost as ds is at university now. However have discovered that pre-cooked rice in a packet is tolerable in store cupboard kimbap eaten in one big piece Healer stylie

Bea · 30/10/2019 17:01

Bettys!... Rice cookers can be as cheap or expensive as you want!... Before I upgraded myself... I had a £30 cooker from debenhans (I think!)... A breville one... Very simple! And did the job very very nicely!... Just bought the cutest one in the world for dd who has just left for uni! It's very compact and cute! (not £30!!)... Dd had been looking forward to her own rice cooker for ages as its a family tradition that you get your own rice cooker when you leave for uni /leave home! 🤣🤣🤣... I sometimes think she went to uni just so she could get one! 🤣🤣🤣

That's a cute rice cooker Bea. I'm also a fan of that dress! Caught up on Tales of Nokdu after abandoning the mobile app and using my the fire stick app. It's trotting along well.

I've taken inspiration and started a 'what's on' list for currently airing dramas. No more remembering what days they air, I can just check my list. I think im in too deep.

AesopsMables · 30/10/2019 17:46

Bea what a lovely tradition!
My twin DD's went to different Uni's opposite sides of the country. They graduated last year and are now living together not too far from DH and I Smile

AesopsMables · 30/10/2019 18:08

Just started Don't Dare To Dream
Same FL as Camelia !

bettys · 30/10/2019 18:11

Oooooh enjoy Aesops!! It's one of my favourites Smile

AesopsMables · 30/10/2019 18:38

Thanks Bettys Wink

boatyardblues · 31/10/2019 17:51

It’s very quiet in here at the mo. We must all be busy doing real life stuff. I am out in the sticks with much slower internet than usual & rowdy children to entertain. Kdrama isn’t getting much of a look-in. However, our recent kpop foray has reignited DS2’s interest. He has discovered SuperJunior’s MVs and spent an hour watching them this morning. 😆 DH is not amused.

AesopsMables · 31/10/2019 18:13

I've been ploughing through DDTD
It's very messy and not sure I can last through it

Two ML pitting for FL
Two grandmothers
Two ex-wife's competing for career and daughter
Two young boys in love daughter

So many loose ends
Why are children living in same house as FL?
What has the pasta guy got to do with it all? Is he just a very invested landlord to them?
Breast cancer
Brain Haemorrhage

I'm only on ep 6Hmm

helloswellow · 31/10/2019 19:09

boatyard they covered a Spanish song with brilliant 80s-esque video. I can't watch it more than once a month or its in my head for days.

boatyardblues · 31/10/2019 19:22

Which one, Hello? I’ve seen the MV for Lo Siento and that’s very catchy. DS2 is currently loving this one - Clap - which I am somewhat sympathetic about for DH. It gives maddening earworm.

OP posts:
helloswellow · 31/10/2019 19:31

I'm quite enjoying the Super Clap comeback. Although is does
remind of an STI. Brace yourself for this masterpiece, admittedly it's not originally theirs, but still funky!

boatyardblues · 31/10/2019 19:33

That should have been Super Clap. DS told me off straight away. 😄

OP posts:
helloswellow · 31/10/2019 20:15

I just can't keep my face straight when bopping around the kitchen singing 'I'ma make you super clap' although it's not as bad as their song that said 'close your mouth, shut your tongue'

boatyardblues · 31/10/2019 20:17

although it's not as bad as their song that said 'close your mouth, shut your tongue'

Yeah, that lyric had me & DS both going Hmm the other night.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 31/10/2019 20:19

Your link is basically the melody from I Only Want To Be With You with Spanish lyrics, no?

OP posts:
bettys · 31/10/2019 20:47

Well I've gone from being pissed off with a Pages document getting overwritten by mistake to smiling stupidly at Choi Siwon et al swapping ginger wigs. Looks like I'm going down a Super Junior rabbit hole for a bit to cheer myself up!

boatyardblues · 31/10/2019 20:52

Super Junior are quite cheesy but they have such catchy tunes and their videos are funny. Its not hard to lose yourself in their back catalogue. Plus Siwon. 👌

boatyardblues · 31/10/2019 20:53

There’s a funny cowboy one, perhaps Mamacita?
