Re: Diana would never have been in that situation had it not been for what Charles and Camilla did, well maybe not. Who knows?
But for the record, I think Diana would have been an absolute nightmare to be married to. Attention-seeking, manipulative, demanding, petulant. They were fundamentally mis-matched and were each miserable with the other.
And she was responsible for her own path once divorced. She didn't have to waltz around Europe with a succession of playboys. Nor did she have to get into that car without putting her seatbelt on. Can't blame Charles for that.

AmeliaE · 24/10/2019 08:46

I can't see how the are modernising the monarchy after making the tax payers pay £2.4m for their house. It looks very traditional to me.

GlitteryNow · 24/10/2019 08:51

It's taking on a US v UK popularity contest. The warm, outgoing express yourself Americans v stuffy, stiff upper lipped Brits. They'll be on Oprah next.

Whoever the sources are in either camp they aren't doing anyone any favours.

Agree with pp Diana could well have ended up having a very troubled life with or without Charles.

The Queen invited them to Balmoral this summer and they turned her down. Maybe she was hoping to offer them advice and support then?

BertrandRussell · 24/10/2019 08:58

“ bohemia14

@BertrandRussell I wouldn't expect to be privy to private conversations the Queen has with her grandchildren or other members of her family.“
No, neither would I.
Odd that so many posters seem to be privy to the private conversations, and even thoughts and motivations of all other members of the Royal Family!

“ The Queen invited them to Balmoral this summer and they turned her down.”
Really? Harry hasn’t been to Balmoral in the summer for years!

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 24/10/2019 09:09

I remember reading a sycophantic piece about how the Queen, as Granny, was protecting and supporting her Grandchildren.

By having William to tea once a week, when he was at Eton. I don't remember Harry being mentioned.

So while I think H&M have been somewhat insensitive with their poor us interview, and have to take responsibility for the public's irritation with them, I don't think either of them is getting the family support that they need.

Can you imagine the AIBU thread “everyone says my GMIL is very wise and has lots of advice that would be really helpful to my dh who is going through a difficult time at the moment. We live next door- but she will only give her advice if we join her on holiday 500 miles away in a location that my dh has incredibly unhappy memories of. Is he unreasonable not to want to go?”

Ah yes. You don't have a GMIL in law problem, you have a DH problem GrinGrinGrin

My DM says Meghan is the worst thing to happen to Harry and I agree.

His mum's been dead 22 years and NOW he goes on the attack? Diana wasn't wearing a seatbelt and was being driven by a drunk driver. Yes the media treated her badly but they did NOT kill her.

The interview questions were clearly planned and I agree they are not getting, or taking, proper advice.

Total BS that Meghan didn't know what she was getting into. She just wants to do things her own way.

Meghan and Harry are disrespecting and distrusting the British people they are meant to serve. We don't expect much. Turn up. Smile. Shake hands. Pose for a few pictures. then piss off back home.

W&K do it very well. They don't make things all about them. They just get on with it. They get their family privacy in return for a few pictures that they release, or one camera person at an agreed distance when the kids start school. M&H take everything as an assault on them, they are going way overboard on the privacy thing.

It only happened when Meghan came onto the scene. Meghan is the issue here. Nothing to do with race but everything to do with her personality.

ASpookyUsername · 24/10/2019 09:28

I forgot to mention that their interview took the attention entirely from the issues they were meant to be championing / raising awareness of. they are surrounded by poverty and hardship and it's all about them. Very very poor taste. And she has the cheek to refer to herself as 'their sister' well she wasn't being very sisterly.

And the whole "H" thing. I cringed so much.

Loved her in Suits. She's very pretty and a great actress. She's still acting.

GlitchStitch · 24/10/2019 09:29

Meh. They want privacy and family support, it would have been the perfect opportunity to have a bit of both away from royal duties and the media. All the others managed to oblige the Queen including far more senior royals than H and M. Again it's the optics, can go and stay at Elton's place but Meghan has never been to Balmoral.

mrscampbellblackagain · 24/10/2019 09:41

Intrigued as to how people know so much about Harry and Balmoral. I don't think it was ever confirmed they were even thinking of going there and nor that Harry hates the place and never goes. It is all just speculation.

However, it is rather like watching Charles and Diana attack each other via the media so quite entertaining to watch. Although you would have hoped some lessons had been learnt about the wisdom of all the sources briefing the press on all sides.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 24/10/2019 09:59

This. Nail on the head.

Which is why this 'breath of fresh air' statement is complete nonsense.

BertrandRussell · 24/10/2019 10:00

“ We don't expect much. Turn up. Smile. Shake hands. Pose for a few pictures. then piss off back home.”
Which bit of this do M&H not do?

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 24/10/2019 10:00

Sorry bold fail for quote.

winge · 24/10/2019 10:02

There's a good piece by David Aaronovitch in the Times today about the need to modernise the royals by slimming them down and paring them back to being 'bicycling' royals, something they have historically resisted as they fight for ever more privilege and cash from the civil list.

I think we should go further and make them a branch of the diplomatic service meaning that they have to undergo rigorous and on-going education, including learning languages and spending time working in diplomatic missions overseas. Any of them who aren't cut out for this personally or educationally can remove themselves from the line of succession until we have only the brightest and most serious-minded left.

I imagine this would go down with them like a cup of cold sick but we desperately need to have a serious and grown up look at creating a royalty fit for the 21st century.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 24/10/2019 10:04

I don't think either of them is getting the family support that they need.

I thought they were the family Meghan never had?

IrmaFayLear · 24/10/2019 10:16

I agree the royal family is too big. I read somewhere (a joke) that they were going to have to reinforce the balcony at Buckingham Palace due to the weight of royals. I know that Charles had a plan to slim things down but I'm not sure what success he had. It will be interesting to see if Beatrice gets the full Windsor Castle carriage ride wedding experience next year.

I posted this before (can't remember what thread!) but as Prince Harry is the equivalent of Princess Margaret, he and Meghan simply need to fade away . The press and public will tire of them pretty quickly. They really need to close down all their social media and take a leave of absence. No oxygen, no interest. I know they wanted to be crusaders for various causes, but, just like Sting, Bono etc it tends to backfire when ordinary people are told how to behave by the privileged.

ASpookyUsername · 24/10/2019 10:32

I meant that they complain all the time when their job is relatively simple. As I say - wave, shake hands, smile, cut a ribbon, give a speech, go home.

Susiesoap7 · 24/10/2019 10:41

Well said spooky! Totally agree with you!

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 24/10/2019 10:54

But for the record, I think Diana would have been an absolute nightmare to be married to. Attention-seeking, manipulative, demanding, petulant.

I do agree with this. She was wonderful and awful in equal measure. Clearly the awfulness took place out of the public eye, but there is enough information after the fact, including from her own words, that confirm she was difficult to live with.

Harry's right to worry that history is repeating itself.
