Anyone watch the start of series 2 tonight? It's in Wednesdays at 8pm on BBC2, so will be available on iplayer.

I thought this whole concept sounded awful and cheesy when I first heard of it, but I loved s1.

I'm glad they've kept the two architects the same.

I don't understand how they film it. Is it green screened so we see them looking into their house? You see them without a headset as if they are in the house?

Crawley65 · 17/10/2019 00:25

I really liked the architects winning design but felt the couple made some bad tweeks to it. Who wants to sit facing a pillar to eat? It was open plan but placing the wrap around table there meant you couldn’t interact with any one in the kitchen. It only sat three, there was a fourth seat but that person was blocked by the pillar! Anymore guests and you’d have to sit in the sofa!

For such a big house I’d want a much larger dining area.

MrsMoastyToasty · 17/10/2019 00:38

In tonight's episode I couldn't work out if they've lost a bedroom to create the double height space over the stairs or what they had done with the original lounge at the front of the house.

ageingdisgracefully · 17/10/2019 07:09

I think the lounge stayed but was closed off behind a door. It was tiny but quite sweet. I think it matched the original footprint.

I actually "got" last night's design. It showed how to make a typical terrace workable and up to date. I would do that myself (money permitting, obvs..).

They put a bathroom upstairs, so lost bedroom space. What happened to the bedrooms?

They seem to gloss over some things..

Oddbutnotodd · 17/10/2019 08:26

I quite liked last nights. It was a detached house on a new estate. I thought the table was bizarre attached to the pillar. I also thought the other suggested design had less wood than usual.

ageingdisgracefully · 17/10/2019 08:43

DOH!

just realised I was watching on catchup. Haven't seen last night's yet.

doginthemanger · 17/10/2019 08:52

I didn't like the eating area round the pillar either. It looked really clumsy and awkward and I wouldn't have a couch but no dining table, though it seems quite common now.

Moving the stairs was good but they were very narrow. The owners and the presenter both mentioned that, though the owner said they'd got used to them.

The previous week's in the terrace was lovely, a great job.

PancakeAndKeith · 17/10/2019 18:45

I think they get shown the house once with the head set on and some of the reactions are from that. Then they film it again without the headset and with the green screen, I’m guessing they are looking at the green screen on a monitor.

It annoys me that they look round as if they can see everything.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 18/10/2019 08:58

I wondered that @MrsMoastyToasty. I love the programme but I did not like the pillar eating thing at all. Where would they eat if they had people over?

jay55 · 18/10/2019 09:39

This week it felt like they had two really good options and then just did their own thing that wasn't as good as either.

How would they get a new bed up those stairs?

midsomermurderess · 18/10/2019 13:41

The man always designs houses that look like community centres or youth hostels where there is virtually no privacy. Has anyone ever gone with his designs?

PorridgeAgainAbney · 18/10/2019 13:48

I couldn't understand how the male architect could have trained and worked in the field yet thought it was a good idea to make someone walk all the way round their house from the front door before they can go upstairs...they would have been right by the front door if he'd not put a wall there.

Iggi999 · 18/10/2019 13:49

Dcs would love a table round a pillar. Then we could all prop our iPads up on it while we ate Grin

PorridgeAgainAbney · 18/10/2019 13:51

Quite liked some of the ideas though. We are hoping to extend but it's made us think a bit more about the layout as a whole rather than just thinking about making the kitchen bigger but maybe hating something else that could actually be altered.

UpToonGirl · 19/10/2019 16:50

Just watching the couple of episodes that are on catchup, I quite like it but I'm glad I can skip through as it's a bit slow paced.

I like the fact they've got two very different architects although the guy's designs seem less practical but very stylish (only seen two mind!). I don't like that the presenter keeps seeming to be engineering a rivalry between them, not sure if sh'e trying to get a Kirsty and Phil vibe going but as the two architects don't appear to be matey it's a bit uncomfortable to watch. In fairness they seem to be swerving her digs about the other and being fairly complementary - although the woman seemed to be a bit WTF to entering via the utility (as was I!).

longtompot · 20/10/2019 11:26

I really liked the first series, but this one not so much. I know I'd rather have Laura design my house as its for living in, not perching.
I don't like how long they discuss the designs, but there is only a small section at the end with what they actually did.
One house that stood out was the couple from series one who had a long thin terrace, where they made a beautiful kitchen diner, were meant to move the stairs and have a huge toy storage wall with pull out furniture (an idea we are going to use to make our kitchen usable by our wheelchair usimg daughters), but I don't think they did. It was lovely.

RebootYourEngine · 20/10/2019 18:18

This isn't a new series.

As seems to becoming more common with the BBC it is the last three episodes of the first series.

I do not know how the guy got this job because he hasn't got a clue how to design a practical family home. Every design seems to be full of cheap looking wood, uncomfortable benches and strange layouts.

PancakeAndKeith · 20/10/2019 18:34

It’s classed as series one, for some reason, but it is new episodes.

covetingthepreciousthings · 20/10/2019 22:10

Just catching up now, does anyone else recognise the couple? (Lindsay & Ruth?) I'm sure they've been on another show, but can't think what.

OP posts:
PancakeAndKeith · 20/10/2019 22:20

I thought I recognised them as well.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 20/10/2019 22:48

That Japanese/Swedish sauna mashup design looked totally incongruous to the style of the house, note to designer: the house was neither in Japan or Sweden, how limiting an appeal that house would have to future buyers (I know it was their forever home, but still....)

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 20/10/2019 22:51

I agree re the pillar, it would drive me insane, the designer said it would have cost about £5000 to put in a proper steel, I would honestly have rather done that and waited for all my fancy finishings, the structure is far more important than copper sinks and taps....

covetingthepreciousthings · 20/10/2019 22:56

I thought I recognised them as well.

Glad it's not just me.. maybe a channel 4 documentary? Something about couples..

OP posts:
NCTDN · 22/10/2019 17:42

I think that tonight's it will be him that wins the design as Laura has got most so far.

heartshapedpositnotes · 23/10/2019 12:38

I think it's really funny that the presenter clearly prefers Laura. For example when he said disparagingly 'a buggy cupboard?!' And she said to him something along the lines of 'yes, a buggy cupboard. Laura actually listens to what her clients want'.

Also how when they're watching Laura's designs, he gets a look of panic when he sees something really good and you see his mind ticking over 'oh shit, I'm in trouble here'. And how it's so painful for him to say nice things about her work, whereas Laura is happy to praise him.

Oh, how it makes me chuckle.Grin
