I am currently making my way through All Creatures Great and Small and absolutely love it.

Have recently also done Lovejoy, Monarch of the Glen, The Good Life and Butterflies.

Can you think of anything else I could watch that is just a gentle pleasant story, without crime, murder, violence, negativity and angst? I'm particularly struggling to think of anything made more recently and frequently end up turning to older series.

The Detectorists.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 11/09/2019 21:46

And, of course, Mapp and Lucia!

The original series with Prunella Scales and Geraldine McEwan, though, NOT the remake!

TheRattleBag · 11/09/2019 22:39

I recently rewatched all of Jonathan Creek (on Netflix) and really enjoyed it. Even though I'd seen most of them before I couldn't always remember how it was done!

Dowton Abbey... love it

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 11/09/2019 22:51

800 Words.

About a grieving Australian journalist who moves his teenage kids to a small New Zealand town where he holidayed as a child. Light and heartwarming. Similar feel to Wild at Heart but without the animals!

Available on BBC iplayer.

Jam and Jerusalem

Rewatch the 80s series Beauty and the Beast with Ron Perlman as the beast... He seems to feature as an unlikely crush for a few mumsnetters.

Loopytiles · 11/09/2019 23:01

US version of Mistresses

gleegeek · 11/09/2019 23:04

I agree with A Place To Call Home and 800 Words - both gentle, well acted and the scenery is gorgeous.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 12/09/2019 01:34

I also forgot Love Nina. It's a short series about a girl who is nannying in London, and writing home to her family. Sweet, and funny.

Socksontheradiator · 12/09/2019 17:53

@AndNoneForGretchenWieners, I read the book Nina wrote and enjoyed it Smile

I love Call the Midwife but there is lots of angst in it. My 9yo decided to watch an episode with me and I ended up having to explain abortions and why they were illegal in the past. That was an educational night for her.

But speaking of programmes that have been OK to watch with the DC (so no violence), they are currently addicted to Glee and they liked Outnumbered as well. Costume dramas are what you need generally though, there was a good adaption of Little Women two Christmasses ago which DD2 and I loved.

Peaky Blinders

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 12/09/2019 19:13

Definitely The Detectorists and Mum. Him and Her (same writer as Mum) is also very sweet. From back in the day I loved May to December. Dated as heck now but very sweet and silly.

Butterfly005 · 12/09/2019 19:15

Absolutely love Last Tango in Halifax. I agree with Heartbeat as an option too. Ghosts is excellent if you're looking for comedy.

newtlover · 12/09/2019 19:19

oh yes came on here to suggest Mum
Detectorists also very good
Friday Night Dinner is extremely funny, with no violence (that I can think of) although the Dad does say shit a lot.

360eyes · 12/09/2019 20:55

From back in the day I loved May to December. Dated as heck now but very sweet and silly.

2 Point 4 Children was on one of the freeview channels the other day and I was expecting it to be terrible, but I quite enjoyed it. Worth a look for the terrible 90's fashion.

You might like In The Club.

360eyes · 12/09/2019 20:56

Sorry the last bit of that post was for the OP!

CathyorClaire · 12/09/2019 21:01

Peaky Blinders Grin

When The Boat Comes In
Dawsons Creek
Cranford

MissClareRemembers · 12/09/2019 21:40

Lots already mentioned but;

House of Eliott
Darling Buds of May
Dinner ladies
To The Manor Born
Jeeves & Wooster
Jonathan Creek
Home Fires
Nanny
Bluebell
Ever Decreasing Circles
The Borrowers
The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe (BBC version)

Now, if someone would just make a tv series out of the Miss Read books I’d be a happy bunny!

AnnaNimmity · 12/09/2019 21:44

Mum is just lovely.

Ginger1982 · 12/09/2019 22:26

Doctor Finlay
Born and Bred
Where The Heart Is
Darling Buds of May
Monarch of the Glen

Basically anything that was on on a Sunday!

yearinyearout · 12/09/2019 22:36

Stella?

Horehound · 13/09/2019 18:35

Err I wouldn't say peaky blinders is "gentle".

Grey7841 · 13/09/2019 19:07
