I am currently making my way through All Creatures Great and Small and absolutely love it.

Have recently also done Lovejoy, Monarch of the Glen, The Good Life and Butterflies.

Can you think of anything else I could watch that is just a gentle pleasant story, without crime, murder, violence, negativity and angst? I'm particularly struggling to think of anything made more recently and frequently end up turning to older series.

Jam and Jerusalem by Jennifer Saunders.

It has been described as her love letter to the English countryside or something like that.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 11/09/2019 15:03

Just remembered three more!

The Paradise
The Halcyon
Mr Selfridge

Beautiful period detail, gentle plots and no swearing. What's not to like? Smile

And, oh yes! Don't miss A Place To Call Home, whatever you do!

Beautifully lavish period Australian family saga. Serious subjects, handled gently. Perfection IMO.

Exquisite clothes, stunning scenery, beautiful men and strong women.

Make seeing it (in order because it's an ongoing saga over several decades) a priority!!

RosaWaiting · 11/09/2019 15:18

Ooh I will look for the Aussie one

Highly recommend the Paradise too.

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/09/2019 15:25

This Country (mockumentary about young people in the countryside) on iplayer. Hilarious (and a bit sad) in a low key way.

littlewoollypervert · 11/09/2019 16:44

Last Tango In Halifax.

Plus I second Dinnerladies, and Jam and Jerusalem (which has a brill episode about an amdram Nativity play - having done costumes for 8 school pantomimes, I can tell you it's spot on)

homemadecommunistrussia · 11/09/2019 17:25

The Detectorists is so good, I made a pilgrimage to Fram'. Grin

RuffleCrow · 11/09/2019 17:36

i didn't know it was filmed in Framlingham. That's quite near me. Thank God they didn't get Ed Sheeran to write the theme song!

homemadecommunistrussia · 11/09/2019 18:02

The scout hut is in Framlingham and so is the the outside of the Three Brewers, I think the inside is somewhere else and sadly I think the gorgeous tree is in Essex!
My family is from Southwold so I didn't go just for the scout hut.Wink

Jeeves and Wooster? Posh twerps are quite rightly out of fashion at the moment, but it has the right pace and 'Sunday' feeling. And you get Stephen Fry + Hugh Laurie.

To the PP who suggested a re-make of All Creatures - heresy!! RIP Robert Hardy.

Thanks to those who've suggested Detectorists; I didn't know about it, and I think I'm going to have to give it a go too!

Flambards

InFiveMins · 11/09/2019 18:17

What about Last Tango in Halifax? Might have already been mentioned but I love that show, such a feel-good drama.

Lovestonap · 11/09/2019 18:19

Dear John. Have it on dvd but might be able to find it online somewhere. I love watching that and ever decreasing circles.... 'what's everyone's second favourite jam?' 😂

nitgel · 11/09/2019 18:19

Ive just watched the first two series of Angels from 1974.
I had my tonsils out in 1978 when that was still on. The nurses came and sat on our beds to watch it. Those were the days! They wouldn't have time to come and sit and chat to us nowadays.

Catquest1 · 11/09/2019 19:00

I immediately thought of Father Brown although there is crime and murder but in a gentle 1950s way. Its cheesy but i love it.

I also thought of To the manor born and Cranford which i dont think have been mentioned:

There was also a 4 part series about a Ramblers club a few years bacl witg Ruth Jones in that was brilliant.

PrivateSpidey · 11/09/2019 19:36

aloe Vera for my mind
Perfect description of the 1995 P&P!

Love so many of the programmes mentioned, something very restorative about watching this kind of thing. It's the only kind of drama I do watch tbh.

How about Due South OP, about the Mountie who goes to work for Chicago police - a sort of fish out of water type thing. Fraser has such impeccable manners Smile and it's so warm-hearted. I've got it on DVD but it was on one of the Freeview channels recently - Drama, maybe?

I also can't contemplate a remake of All Creatures Shock The three leads were perfectly cast and Peter Davison was hot Grin
It would be sacrilege!

PrivateSpidey · 11/09/2019 19:39

I also like the Dean Cain/Teri Hatcher Superman series Grin
