Recommend me a gentle tv drama

I am currently making my way through All Creatures Great and Small and absolutely love it.

Have recently also done Lovejoy, Monarch of the Glen, The Good Life and Butterflies.

Can you think of anything else I could watch that is just a gentle pleasant story, without crime, murder, violence, negativity and angst? I'm particularly struggling to think of anything made more recently and frequently end up turning to older series.

I’ve enjoyed so many of these.

Adding ‘The Trip’ with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon.

Also Derry Girls (ok a bit of colourful language but funny, sweet and nostalgic).

Outlander can hardly be described as Agentle pleasant story, without crime, murder, violence, negativity and angst I love it but it is far from non violent.

Yes minister? Not so gentle but no swearing etc and incredibly very up to date on many issues.

My absolute favourite is Little House on the Prairie

homemade I wasn’t sure if Outlander fitted the bill! The books are very popular. My elderly mother loves them for a bit of escapism.

Some older gentle dramas I remember are At Home with the Braithwaites and Drop Dead Gorgeous. Also look at Kay Mellor (think that's her name) dramas.

I feel the same as you OP. Sick of violence in dramas. You can't have a medival drama on TV without some form of gruesome capital punishment. Even a documentary about Scottish rulers discussed the murder of a baby and archeologists can't dig up bones somewhere without the narrative "this person met a grizzy end..." We are all aware of what methods they used for capital punishment in the past, we don't need TV to make it hit home what it was like - we have imaginations!

Funnily enough though I have watched Chernobyl which did have a lot of suffering, but could cope with it because it was in context and in a way it would have been wrong to not acknowledge the sacrifice the firefighters made to save everybody else. Also found Years and Years quite disturbing and unsettling without the violence, but that's because of good writing, not because it had physical suffering in. Writers shouldn't rely on gratuitous violence and suffering to add impact to your programme. I suspect it gets added in at a later date sometime though as it's what people come to expect.

Sorry that was a bit of a rant! But I do get where you are coming from with wanting something a bit more gentle!

You must try watching Young Sheldon!

I normally run away screaming from all American sitcoms with smart-mouthed children trying to get a laugh with every line they utter.

And, to be honest, I avoided this one aswell for ages, until I saw a couple of minutes by accident!

It's a very intelligently written, gentle comedy-drama, with very believable and understated acting.

Yes, it's a comedy, but there moments of genuine poignancy. It's actually made me shed a tear, now and again, but I always feel warm and fuzzy and nice at the conclusion of every episode. The sort of feeling when you sigh with satisfaction, and think "that was really good!"

Start with episode one and watch them in sequence, if you can, because it's an ongoing story. There are only two series, so far.

I'm desperately hoping they are going to make some more!

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do Smile

Definitely Detectorists ! Really really human but poignant and quite mystical at times . Worth watching just for the theme Magpie by the Unthanks . Look on YouTube .
Can't remember who wrote the song but it was inspired by the writer giving s lift to a country woman who spat each time she saw a magpie on the journey . Unfortunately the writer had just bought a new car .......

I loved the Beiderbeck trilogy - really gentle but still a good mystery and with great music. I'd like to watch it again.

I think the Johnny Flynn theme tune to the Detectorists is so hauntingly beautiful it almost makes me cry but I don't know why.

I completely agree @CaptainMyCaptain. Gorgeous song. I do love that instrospective folk style generally though. It's very Nick Drake, apart from his voice.
