casket looks a bit posh to be anyone poor looking at the video....

Newgame989 · 08/10/2019 16:37

I’m going for Arthur as the death - they’ve hinted at tom’s mania, and Arthur has that sort of front that might hide mh issues, he understands Georgiana’s lethargy, for example.

Edward and Clara seem too tough to do anything drastic.

FatherFintanFay · 08/10/2019 16:45

kit19 where are you seeing the trailers? I can't find anything on the ITV website. I did, unfortunately, find a lot of fan videos on YouTube made up of compiled Charlotte and Sidney "moments", set to angsty pop songs that sound like they belonged on the Twilight soundtrack. And I thought we were a bit overinvested on this thread...

Kit19 · 08/10/2019 17:09

@fatherfintanfay
lol this is NOTHING compared to what's on tumblr. Its on twitter twitter.com/Sanditon/status/1181533948230406145?s=20

Babybel90 · 08/10/2019 17:19

I think @FatherFintanFay is right, it’s old Stringer, they’re using ropes to lower the coffin, no black straps and if you look at the trousers and shoes at the back of shot they look like working men’s clothes.

The coffin looks quite basic too, it’s not shiny wood.

I’m definitely over invested!

FatherFintanFay · 08/10/2019 17:22

Yeah, I'm not about to fall down the Tumblr rabbit hole. It's the sort of thing that makes me glad to be old, so I don't have to care about Young Person Stuff. General consensus on that Twitter thread is either Edward or Lady Denham to be deaded, although I saw a supporter for my Old Stringer theory too. I agree with a commenter who basically asks what the point of Young Stringer was if his only contribution to the plot was to not only not get the girl, but to not even get properly knocked back. He didn't really declare his feelings to Charlotte and as far as I can tell, she still doesn't realise he likes her in that way. If that was all he was there for I don't really see the point of his character?

FatherFintanFay · 08/10/2019 17:26

And yes, I think that looked like quite a basic coffin. Just a plain box with a black baize covering, which is what I think the bog standard option was back then. I suppose if it is Old Stringer, Tom might cover the funeral expenses out of the guilt of not paying him for months, but then I don't think funerals would have been quite so financially ruinous as they are these days.

Babybel90 · 08/10/2019 17:33

I don’t think it’s Arthur because the coffin isn’t big enough, and it wouldn’t be Lady Denham because that would leave Tom ruined and I think as he’s such a jolly, optimistic character they wouldn’t end the series with his downfall. I’m sure Sanditon will turn out to be a successful resort.

I think the will that Clara and Edward burned must have been a fake as she would have left it stored with her solicitor, because she knew if any of those 3 found it after her death they’d burn it and quite frankly I can’t see her leaving money to a donkey sanctuary when titles and money are so important to her, she’d want to leave it to family to carry on the name.

ScreamingValenta · 08/10/2019 17:34

If it's likely the death is a working class person, I'll stick my neck out and guess young Stringer. My reasoning -

  • He's lost Charlotte and it's too late in the series for him to hook up with anyone else
  • It would enable Sidney to console Charlotte
  • Old Stringer has already had a near miss so for something else to happen to him would be a bit repetitive
  • Would add shock value to the final episode
  • Might persuade Lady Denham to fork out for more workmen
JaneJeffer · 08/10/2019 17:39

@ScreamingValenta I think it’ll be him to for the reasons you’ve given plus Leo’s characters have form in this regard coughdrummondcough

Newgame989 · 08/10/2019 17:51

Ah you’re right, the shoes are wrong - but would the working class men be doing the lowering into the grave anyway (clutches at straw for my pet theory).

I could buy young stringer too

FatherFintanFay · 08/10/2019 17:51

I will be seriously pissed off if it turns out that Young Stringer's only purpose was to die so that Sidney could comfort Charlotte and then slip her one over the funeral ham.

ScreamingValenta · 08/10/2019 17:54

Yes, it wouldn't really do young Stringer justice as an ending. A case of 'The funeral baked meats did coldly furnish forth the marriage tables." .

Babybel90 · 08/10/2019 18:30

I suppose it could be young Stringer, there was a serious lack of PPE equipment when he was up on that scaffolding.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 08/10/2019 18:57

I don’t think JA would have had Tom being ruined so hoping Davies doesn’t do this. She generally doesn’t punish her ‘nicer’ characters IMO.

Kit19 · 08/10/2019 18:58

Apparently Esther is wearing mourning Whig suggests not Young Stringer 🤔

ScreamingValenta · 08/10/2019 19:00

Oooh. Could it be Edward and suicide - the plain coffin & working class pall bearers being because he'd have to be buried in unconsecrated ground in those days (I think)?

FatherFintanFay · 08/10/2019 19:09

I work in health and safety and can get quite spoddy about this sort of thing. According to Bird's accident pyramid, 10 serious accidents = 1 fatality, and it doesn't look like any risk control measures have been put in place since Old Stringer had his leg incident. Alas, such was early 19th century safety culture. So I'm sticking with my Old Stringer industrial accident theory Grin

ScreamingValenta · 08/10/2019 19:12

'Spoddy' - what a wonderful word - years since I last heard it! Grin

JaneJeffer · 08/10/2019 20:23

I don't think Edward would kill himself. I expect him to charm a naive heiress into eloping with him.

That coffin looks like it's covered in velvet, I'm going for richer character. I don't know much about English funeral customs but I'm guessing the shoes wouldn't matter because the rich relatives wouldn't be lowering the coffin themselves.

Someone Esther is wearing full mourning for would either be Lady Denhem or her pervy brother. I'm going for the brother.
