The Mail and Express regularly fill up space with reports of what happens in TV programmes that we could all watch for ourselves if we're that interested. It always makes me laugh that they both hate the BBC and Channel 4, but are so reliant on programmes like GBBO and Strictly to fill their pages.

Kitsandkids · 18/09/2019 23:19

Wrt that article about Paul storming off, as much as I dislike the man, I didn’t think he stormed off. He was trying not to laugh!

VetOnCall · 18/09/2019 23:37

It was a strange episode; the curd cheese tarts didn't do it for me 🤢 and the showstopper wasn't baking. I thought it would be something like a panna cotta for the technical and baked cheesecake for the showstopper - they've had that before but ages ago before it moved to Ch4.

I felt bad for Phil, I don't think he should have gone. Priya totally messed up the technical, they couldn't even try it. It was a poor call imo. That Express article is crap though, Paul's a bit of a knobber but he didn't 'storm off'.

2stepsonthewater · 18/09/2019 23:51

I agree it did seem unfair for Phil to go. His showstopper was too bland and 'kindergarten' level - but Priya's technical was so bad the judges didn't even taste it!

Not watching the Bakeoff but am glad I am still reading the comments just for this!

Not enjoying this series very much. I think it is mostly to do with growing realisation of what an unpleasant man Paul Hollywood is. Love prue and sandy and Noel. This week’s baking was ‘messy’ and I couldn’t connect with it somehow.

LemonRedwood · 19/09/2019 06:49

That express article is so misleading.

"stormed off"
"his absence"
"finally returned"

None of those things happened. He turned away, walked about 3 steps, then turned back, laughing.

HeronLanyon · 19/09/2019 07:00

Agree - no storming off at all - it was clearly a jokey response to what he saw !

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/09/2019 07:09

Yorkshire curd tarts from Cooplands are the best thing ever. Closely followed by pasta de nata.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 19/09/2019 07:19

I definitely remember some sort of pancake thing where they had to stagger the start so Mary & Paul could eat them straight away?

That was Salzburger Nockerln, they are definitely baked, but must be fresh.

The pancake thing is Kaiserschmarrn, but they wouldn't stagger that, no need.

It's all Mehlspeisen, which is sort of Things from dough, or with flour, for lack of better translation.

redchocolatebutton · 19/09/2019 07:21

what are mishti made of? is it a bit like toffee?

AnOojamaflip · 19/09/2019 07:43

Totally odd choice. Phil's were too simple. Ignoring the disaster other 'bakers' had in the two previous diary 'bakes' one other contestant had a melted sweet and another three balls (all firm and not even varied in size.)

AnOojamaflip · 19/09/2019 07:49

I also couldn't figure out what mishti are supposed to be like. Though I was watching with my dad who said loads of shops round him sell them and was a bit confused by the cocktail type ones.

Welsh Woman's (name escapes me, but I think she might just be Welsh) rice pudding looked like something the dog sicks up after he's eaten something that came out the other end.

SanFranBear · 19/09/2019 08:26

Thanks Chardonnay - your memory works a lot better than mine Grin

Were any of those you mention the one where they had to make doilies? Really strange challenge, that one...

SanFranBear · 19/09/2019 08:27

Apologies - I can see that they must've been the Kaiserschmarrn one!

Does anyone know what next week is - I don't think they mentioned it (Although as I think we've established, I can't remember shit!!)

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 19/09/2019 08:45

Oh No, I have an Austrian grandmother, so I’ve eaten tons of these.

noodlenosefraggle · 19/09/2019 09:06

My mum is from Mumbai and didn't know but thought it meant mixed. They are different types of Indian sweets. The fried balls Priya made are gulab jaman which are doughnuts in syrup, I think the soft paste ones are pendas. They are usually white flattened round balls so I think the6ve just coloured the paste. someone made carrot halwa which is easy and delicious and they made various other halwas. That's just from sight so someone else may know better. They are all delicious but horrifically sweet so I hardly ever eat them now.

noodlenosefraggle · 19/09/2019 09:33

Oh yes the harder ones are burfi.

VetOnCall · 19/09/2019 09:59

SanFran the 'doilies' could be the lace pancakes they had to make for the technical in the Batter Week mentioned above? They were all presented at the same time though, not staggered. They're in the recipe book that goes with that series, I've got it. No German name though, they're just 'lace pancakes'
www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/lace_pancakes_20045/amp

The technicals I remember that were staggered were molten chocolate puddings with peanut butter inside and chocolate soufflés.

VetOnCall · 19/09/2019 10:01

Next week is 1920s week apparently. They haven't done that before either!

FawnDrench · 19/09/2019 10:33

GBBO has lost all its sense of "normality" with all these outlandish, fancy, far-fetched, frankly bonkers "bakes".

Before, it inspired me to think ooh I wouldn't mind having a go at say, that type of pie, biscuit, cake or whatever, but I am left now with a sense of bafflement and wondering if I really did watch a program that claims to be about baking.

So so disappointing.

PinkDaydreams · 19/09/2019 11:14

@FawnDrench I completely agree with you, bring back some proper baking!!

OkayGo · 19/09/2019 11:19

I wouldn’t even mind if they did challenges we’d seen before in other series. It’s not like you’d really remember and everyone would do something different anyway!

PinkDaydreams · 19/09/2019 11:47

Thank you to a pp for getting me into bake off on Netflix! I’ve noticed that mel and sue try the bakes, do Noel and sandy? I don’t think I’ve seen them eat?

PinkDaydreams · 19/09/2019 11:47

Also, hasn’t Paul got horrible hands?! Dirty with nibbled nails, grim
