I thought I'd start a thread for discussing series 3 episode one of The Handmaid's Tale to be shown on Channel 4 at 9pm on 9th June 2019.

Please NO SPOILERS for those who have already watched it.

Re the clapping, I think attitudes to refugees are very variable. In Europe in recent years there have been people welcoming refugees at railway stations with flowers and sweets as well as sadly resentment and hostility. It wouldn't surprise me if the staff of a hospital were pro.

I'm Canadian and I think the hospital scene is entirely plausible. Sadly, there are certainly anti refugee people here, but if Gilead were on our doorstep, I do think there would be a number of people cheering every time someone escaped the bastards, particularly hospital staff who were treating them.

arganlady · 12/06/2019 13:24

I haven't actually said a thing about the other episodes which is why I asked. Although unwarranted rude responses make me bloody feel like it. Angry

EmpressLesbianInChair · 12/06/2019 13:46

Sorry, arganlady.

We’re all just a bit paranoid because we know everyone else has seen more. And last time round people not in the UK would drop in and make comments like ‘OMG EPISODE 6!!!!!’ that while not technically spoilers still meant that we knew something big was coming & so took away half the shock factor.

TheLoneWolfDies · 12/06/2019 14:20

What day does it show in the UK? I'm in Ireland but have seen the first 3, think the 4th is today although I'm not sure. Just curious so I know when the second will have been seen.

Quite annoyed I watched them, would have been nice to follow it with the thread.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 12/06/2019 14:22

Sunday nights.

There will be other threads for people watching at a faster pace, though.

OriginofSpecies · 12/06/2019 15:12

I've reported the thread and have asked MNHQ to add "UK pace, NO SPOILERS" to the thread title.

Whoever starts the next one, maybe put the episode number more prominently as well. I might not be able to start other threads as I'm not always around on a Sunday evening, so please feel free to anyone who wants to start the next one.

Thanks for starting and sorting OP Grin

EmpressLesbianInChair · 12/06/2019 16:08

Thanks Origin.

I think it might be simpler just to have one UK thread for all the episodes with big warnings all over the title?

AnotherEmma · 12/06/2019 16:10

I like separate threads of each episode. It's the "safest" way to do it. As you finish each episode you can then read the thread. Some people might record episodes or watch them on catch up.

AnotherEmma · 12/06/2019 16:10

for each episode

EmpressLesbianInChair · 12/06/2019 16:11

Ok, that does make sense.

CurbsideProphet · 12/06/2019 16:20

I'm nervous to come onto the thread now I know it's only a telly prog, but it's so unnecessary for posters to ignore the title and really quite mean to threaten to ruin future episodes. I'm sure there's another thread for those streaming / watching ahead of channel 4.

Etino · 12/06/2019 16:37

@KitKat1985, I thought the opposite, that the hospital staff would have been warmer to her when they were hanging over the gantries, I suppose they weren't for tension until she was 'formally' welcomed.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 12/06/2019 16:54

I'm sure there's another thread for those streaming / watching ahead of channel 4.

There's at least one non-UK pace thread where people watching ahead wouldn't have to worry about dropping spoilers.

Iggi999 · 12/06/2019 17:01

That was a rollercoaster of an episode. Big noisy tears from me - mostly of relief though!

TheLoneWolfDies · 12/06/2019 17:03

I didn't see anyone threathen to spoil the episodes?

CurbsideProphet · 12/06/2019 17:21

Sorry bold fail there.

Did Emily not tell Luke the baby was June’s? I guess I just assumed she wanted to meet him to hand the baby over?

Didn’t it end with Emily saying “I’m Emily. Your wife saved my life?”

I wonder if now she’s in Canada Emily will get new glasses? She had them in the flashbacks.

Dulra · 12/06/2019 17:34

CurbsideProphet i think you're being a bit dramatic here she didn't threaten to add spoilers she was just expressing her frustration at rude responses she'd received when asking what episode c4 were on...not sure how you expect posters from outside the uk to know that without asking Confused. I see now the episode number is in the title which makes it easier for people and less likely for mistakes to happen. I don't think anyone intentionally spoils but episodes can run in to each other and it can be hard to remember what happened in which episode I guess if anyone is in doubt don't post!!

endofthelinefinally · 12/06/2019 17:35

I hope Emily gets the chance to tell the whole truth about Gilead. She must be so traumatised, she will need a lot of care and support.

endofthelinefinally · 12/06/2019 17:35

Is she the first handmaid to get out?

AnotherEmma · 12/06/2019 17:36

"I see now the episode number is in the title"

The episode number was always in the title. They've just added "UK PACE, NO SPOILERS"

Iggi999 · 12/06/2019 17:47

Emily was mutilated by them which should surely make the Canadians move away from a let’s-trade stance when they say how insane Gilead is becoming.
