A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, but there other sources, including Dramabus and AmazonPrime.

Previous Threads, with discussion of what we’ve enjoyed and what to avoid:

Thread 5 (previous threads linked from OP of each preceding thread)

There are suggestions for shows that we’ve enjoyed - those marked with asterisk(s) are more uniformly loved or admired. Cautionary note: in categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. romance and thriller; supernatural, romance and a thriller, crime series with blossoming relationship aspects. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier elements. View the categories below as approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg for younger teens.

Comedy (with a side order of absurd)
I picked up a celebrity on the street (Viki)
My Fellow Citizens (Viki)

Crime/Thriller
Healer (Netflix)*
Heartless City (Viki)
He is Psychometric (Viki)
I Hear Your Voice (Netflix /Viki)
Life on Mars (classy remake of BBC series, Dramafast)
Live (Netflix)
Pride & Prejudice (Netflix)*
Prison Playbook (Netflix)*
Suspicious Partner (Netflix)*

Romance - lighter & fluffier

Happy Once Again (Netflix)
Her Private Life (Viki)*
His Master’s Sun (Netflix)
Love from a Star (Netflix)*

Romance is the Bonus Book (Netflix)**
She Was Pretty (Dramabus/Netflix)*
The Beauty Inside (Viki/Netflix)
The Last Empress (Viki)
Thirty Not Seventeen (Viki)
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo (Netflix/Viki)
What’s Up With Secretary Kim (Viki)**
You are my Destiny (Netflix)

Romance - heavier weight/more grown up
Because This Is My First Life (Viki)*
Chicago Typewriter (Viki)*
Fight For My Way (Viki/Drama bus)*
Just Between Lovers (Viki)**
Mr Sunshine (Netflix)
My Strange Hero (Viki)
Red Carpet - film (Netflix, very adult content)
Something in the Rain (Netflix)
The Package (Viki)

Supernatural/fantasy/sci-fi - fluffier
Goblin (Viki)*
I am not a Robot (Netflix)
Legend of the Blue Sea (Viki/Netflix)
While You Were Sleeping (Viki)*

Supernatural/fantasy/sci-fi - darker
Black (Netflix)*
The Guest (Dramafast)
W (Viki & Netflix)*

Zombies
Kingdom (Netflix)*
Train to Busan - film (Amazon Prime)

Mad as a box of frogs/uncategorisable
Strong Girl Bong Soon (Netflix)

We have some lovely occasional posters who have lived in Korea, are Korean or have Korean partners/family members who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references. (Although its possible we have scared them all away since our early threads with the incessant fangirling. If you’re still reading, please say hi.)

If you want to know your oppas from your unnis and other Korean terms of address and honorifics, there are good resources online.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, film and kpop when the mood takes us. To get to grips with the lingo, try dramaloveaddicts.proboards.com/thread/24/korean-word-day?page=1

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too thick to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together. Some of the regular favourite actors have been abbreviated too for speed/efficiency, although “him off Black” seems to have stuck for Song Seung-Heon. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

Painfully slow subs on WWW. 🙄

OP posts:
Bea · 20/06/2019 22:03

Ms Hammerubi... 😭😍😍😍... It's such a tearjerker in the stories... It reminds me of a courtroom ER... lots of heartfelt stories in between the running storyline of main cast!.. The characters are great! I'm loving all of them.. (except a few! There's always a few!!) I've gotten teary! And I love 😍 Judge Angel 😇 😍😍😂😂

boatyardblues · 20/06/2019 22:10

I’m back to Crowned Clown and yet another assassination. OTOH I was watching WWW earlier thinking a couple of poisonings wouldn't go amiss and that its an underutilised plot device in modern dramas. 😂

OP posts:
bettys · 20/06/2019 22:39

Lol can you imagine telling a CEO to go drink poison like they do the queen Grin

I have just watched 2 episodes of Absolute Boyfriend without subs and enjoyed it (must be the roseeee - on laptop can't find the ee)

Bea · 20/06/2019 23:12

Ms Hammerubi... I think I've shed a tear for each episode I've watched! 😭😭😭... It's very touching and well done! 😍👍

Bea · 20/06/2019 23:12

Watching without subs! BETTYS 😱😱😱😱😂😂😂😂

boatyardblues · 20/06/2019 23:13

Betty has form for this, Bea. Remember HPL?

OP posts:
Bea · 21/06/2019 12:49

Bettys... tut tut tut!

bettys · 21/06/2019 14:53

I can’t believe just how bad the baddies are in Angel!

Bea · 21/06/2019 15:08

Villains! Like I said... You watch a drama and think to yourself!... These are the baddest of the bad... And then you watch another and go... Oh no! These are even worse! 😂 😂 😂

bettys · 21/06/2019 15:35

Yes!!! They are dastardly! They make my blood boil! 🤣🤬

Bea · 21/06/2019 23:04

Just caught up on Angel! 😭😱😱😱😱😱... They are sooooo dastardly! How can they be sooo horrible! and Ni Na just needs to get over it and stop whining! Arrgghhh!

bettys · 22/06/2019 00:04

Quite! The special effects are a little..,,errrrr....budget but I’ve decided to just go with the flow on that one 😆😇

Struggling to finish Orange Marmalade as they have basically repeated the same story 3 times. Boy falls for girl, finds out she’s a vampire, it all gets messy. Then Joseon past life, boy falls for girl, finds out she’s a vampire, it all gets a bit messy. Then back to the present, amnesia strikes, boy falls for - oh you know the rest! 🤣

boatyardblues · 22/06/2019 00:20

I was trying to catch up on Angel but kept falling asleep (long week), so I’ve given up.

Still loving WWW but ep 6 finished on a semi-cliffhanger that prickled my spidey senses, but I think the scenario could be interpreted in several ways and it may be OK. I showed DH the last 8-9 min of ep 5 (the bit which tickled me so much yesterday) and he agreed it was great.

OP posts:
Bea · 22/06/2019 07:09

Orange Marmalade. M. Yes! Have to admit I did a bit of skippitydoodah - ing with that one! 😂 😂

Myung soo in Angel is breaking my heart and kudos to Shin Hye Sun who has turned her character around from selfish bitter cold to yearning warm and funny!... How many eps left anyone know! I want to get to the end! 😭😭

Bea · 22/06/2019 07:33

Just thinking...

What would you say is the most perfectly constructed Drama?... Not your favourite... But the most well put together...

Eg... You know how much I lurve SGBONGSOON but I am fully aware of its flaws...and... I love a lot of dramas due to the ML — moi? Shallow? No! 😱😂

But... What has it all?
Story / pace /acting / how it's filmed?...

At the moment..for me... I have to say Crowned Clown has it all...

Thoughts?

boatyardblues · 22/06/2019 07:47

Her Private Life is a strong contender.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 22/06/2019 07:50

Crowned Clown is lovely so far, but I don’t think a casual viewer would stick with it because its quite slow and requires a fair bit of concentration to keep up with all the palace intrigue.

OP posts:
bettys · 22/06/2019 09:49

Agree with Her Private Life and Crowned Clown
Would also suggest
Prison Playbook
Life on Mars
Because This Is My First Life

They all have a strong story, good pace with no dips, and are visually strong (bonus is having a fit ML )

boatyardblues · 22/06/2019 10:47

visually strong

Grin Is this our new shorthand for beautiful oppas?

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 22/06/2019 11:00

Good call on Prison Playbook and Because This Is My First Life, Bettys. I’m less sure about Life on Mars because its a remake, so less definitively Korean.

OP posts:
bettys · 22/06/2019 13:48

Ok I will concede that Life on Mars is a remake so not inherently a kdrama though it has put its own twist on.

Crowned Clown however has to be the best costume drama/sageuk I’ve seen so far, and although I did love Moon Lovers Scarlet Heart Ryeo the end wasn’t perfect.

Will also suggest Fight My Way and Chief Kim. Thought about Just Between Lovers but it dipped a bit in the middle

bettys · 22/06/2019 13:53

It’s interesting when you start looking closely & nitpicking. Loved W but it dipped in the middle, Black was nearly perfect apart from the ending, same with The Last Empress

Healer?
Can’t currently find anything wrong with Absolute Boyfriend or Angel’s Last Mission yet but they haven’t finished airing yet

Bea · 22/06/2019 13:58

Yes! W... I absolutely love it and would deffo say one of my faves... But suffers from too twisty... Needed to be a little tighter

Healer similar too!... Loved it all but the flashback story got too convoluted and wasn't sure who was who!

Just between lovers again! Great story but got a little wishy washy... Still love it though!

Bea · 22/06/2019 14:06

I need to get back to chief kim... I forgot I started it... Thanks! Bettys! You've reminded me! 👍

Bettys!! Are you saying Hwrang isn't the best historical / costume! 😂 😂 😂
