A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, but there other sources, including Dramabus and AmazonPrime.

Previous Threads, with discussion of what we’ve enjoyed and what to avoid:

Thread 5 (previous threads linked from OP of each preceding thread)

There are suggestions for shows that we’ve enjoyed - those marked with asterisk(s) are more uniformly loved or admired. Cautionary note: in categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. romance and thriller; supernatural, romance and a thriller, crime series with blossoming relationship aspects. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier elements. View the categories below as approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg for younger teens.

Comedy (with a side order of absurd)
I picked up a celebrity on the street (Viki)
My Fellow Citizens (Viki)

Crime/Thriller
Healer (Netflix)*
Heartless City (Viki)
He is Psychometric (Viki)
I Hear Your Voice (Netflix /Viki)
Life on Mars (classy remake of BBC series, Dramafast)
Live (Netflix)
Pride & Prejudice (Netflix)*
Prison Playbook (Netflix)*
Suspicious Partner (Netflix)*

Romance - lighter & fluffier
Beating Again (Netflix)
Coffee Prince (Netflix)
Don’t Dare to Dream (Netflix, or as Jealousy Incarnate on Viki)*
Happy Once Again (Netflix)
Her Private Life (Viki)*
His Master’s Sun (Netflix)
Love from a Star (Netflix)*
Pinocchio (Netflix)
Romance is the Bonus Book (Netflix)**
She Was Pretty (Dramabus/Netflix)*
The Beauty Inside (Viki/Netflix)
The Last Empress (Viki)
Thirty Not Seventeen (Viki)
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo (Netflix/Viki)
What’s Up With Secretary Kim (Viki)**
You are my Destiny (Netflix)

Romance - heavier weight/more grown up
Because This Is My First Life (Viki)*
Chicago Typewriter (Viki)*
Fight For My Way (Viki/Drama bus)*
Just Between Lovers (Viki)**
Mr Sunshine (Netflix)
My Strange Hero (Viki)
Red Carpet - film (Netflix, very adult content)
Something in the Rain (Netflix)
The Package (Viki)

Supernatural/fantasy/sci-fi - fluffier
Goblin (Viki)*
I am not a Robot (Netflix)
Legend of the Blue Sea (Viki/Netflix)
While You Were Sleeping (Viki)*

Supernatural/fantasy/sci-fi - darker
Black (Netflix)*
The Guest (Dramafast)
W (Viki & Netflix)*

Zombies
Kingdom (Netflix)*
Train to Busan - film (Amazon Prime)

Mad as a box of frogs/uncategorisable
Strong Girl Bong Soon (Netflix)

We have some lovely occasional posters who have lived in Korea, are Korean or have Korean partners/family members who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references. (Although its possible we have scared them all away since our early threads with the incessant fangirling. If you’re still reading, please say hi.)

If you want to know your oppas from your unnis and other Korean terms of address and honorifics, there are good resources online.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, film and kpop when the mood takes us. To get to grips with the lingo, try dramaloveaddicts.proboards.com/thread/24/korean-word-day?page=1

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too thick to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together. Some of the regular favourite actors have been abbreviated too for speed/efficiency, although “him off Black” seems to have stuck for Song Seung-Heon. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

You're not gatecrashing, do join in and feel free to comment!

Seconded! Welcome Salty. There’s no gate-crashing here. If you like kdrama, you are in. Let’s faceit, its such a niche interest, ee need to stick together.

Ginger - So glad we are watching One Spring Night at a similar pace. I’m assuming that any pregnancy will be result of marital rape. I realised I have no idea about the laws on marital rape or termination in S Korea so plan to do some research later.

OP posts:
saltysow · 18/06/2019 16:35

Have any of you ever been to S Korea? I'd love to go.

Bea · 18/06/2019 17:09

Welcome to All! Do join in !!! Smile the more the merrier!

I've started to watch My Love Eun Dong (viki)... it's very sweet so far (i'm 10 mins in!) and looks promising... of course i have to admit i started watching it after being prompted by a Soompi story this morning about Psychometric Jinyoung (fallen for a Soompi article!??? I really really have completely lost it now!)

Sooo... my viewing at the moment is...

On Air
Absolute Boyfriend (Viki)
Secret Life of My Secretary (Viki)
Angels Last Mission (Viki)

Netflix
Ms Hammarubi

Viki
My Love Eun Dong

Lined up
City Hunter (Dodgy Boobage site)
The Emperor Owner of The Mask (with Strange hero/I Am Not A Robot Yoo Seung Ho & Lovely Angel Kim Myung Soo)
WWW - Viki
One Spring Night - though worried this might be tooo slow even though I love Jung Hae In
Abyss - I love Park Bo Young so will make the effort

On The Back Burner ... but do want to finish...
Wok Of Love (viki)

and there's loads more but can't remember off the top of my head! I really do have to take a leaf out of Boatyards and Bettys book and start to write down what I've watched! Shock

Bea · 18/06/2019 17:13

This is obviously all sandwiched between my obsessive YouTube BTS watching / VLive BTS Run episodes / BTS VLive chats...

and Bettys... there's a Live stream this sunday at 11am GMT of their Seoul Fan Meet (you have to pay of course!)... it looks dead good fun! (they've just had two dates in Busan!) the setlist is really cracking as they've gone down the more album tracks / soundcloud treats fan favourites! A great version of Ddaeng with the vocal line doing some of the rapping.... needless to say JungKook just effortlessly triumphs! Shock Grin

Oceanwaves · 18/06/2019 18:00

Where have you gone Heechulmyoppa, seadays and the rest?

Seadays here! New account though as I had a rough couple of months and deleted my mn acc as I needed some space from all social media! I offer food pictures to apologise for my absence Wink

Yay! Seadays is back. So lovely to see some old faces, though I’m now very, very hungry after looking at your pics.

Have any of you ever been to S Korea? I'd love to go.

We are currently saving up. Hoping to be able to visit next summer.

boatyardblues · 18/06/2019 18:33

DH thinks I should be fluent by then, based on my currenylt viewing habits. Grin 😂

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 18/06/2019 19:27

Ocean - Can you remind me, are you the Brit living in SK? MN have vanished all the posts referring to you, as well as your old ones so I can’t check. I was wondering earlier what laws were like in SK around marital rape and terminations. How does SK fare relative to other countries?

OP posts:
Oceanwaves · 18/06/2019 19:43

Oh that's weird, when I read back old threads my posts are still there!

My family is Korean and we moved when I was small to the UK! So I visit often, but I kind of feel like a bit of a tourist/outsider as lived pretty much whole life apart from when I was small in the UK. I'm a lost soul! I don't really feel fully British or Korean!
South Korea has some seriously depressing laws and attitudes to women, recent things in the news you might of seen is re the spy hole cams in women toilets.

Abortions are illegal, apart from in rare circumstances like if its because of rape or similar or if its a life threatening health situation. So incredibly crap. I have asked my cousin about marital rape and attitudes around it, as I'm not sure tbh.

boatyardblues · 18/06/2019 19:47

To be honest, it took until the 90s for marital rape to outlawed here and our conviction rates are crap too.

The spy cams in loos is starting to happen here - there’s a thread on the MN Feminist boards about a woman finding one in the unisex loo in a branch of Costa.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 18/06/2019 20:33

(Also, thanks for checking with your cousin.)

Bea · 18/06/2019 21:08

Wowser! Ms Hammerubi is turning out to be a real fight the patriarchy drama! Feisty woman is the word!!
Woo hoo!! 👍

boatyardblues · 18/06/2019 22:21

Sounds great, Bea.

Crowned Clown: so, so many poisonings. 😕

OP posts:
Bea · 18/06/2019 22:28

Crowned Clown!... They must have used up all the blood capsules in the kdrama props dept! 😂 😂 😂 😂... And if they're not actually being poisoned... They're plotting to poison someone!... The treachery! 😱😱😱... It's great!! 😂

bettys · 18/06/2019 22:56

Wahey good to see you again seadays! Or Oceanwaves I should say. Amazing food, is that a restaurant or at home?

Bea I will check out the setlist for BTS & hope some of it pops up on Youtube. I have started watching D-Day purely for Kim Young Kwang though I am hoping the nurse in the dodgy hospital plays a large role as she is one of my favourite comedy kdrama actresses.

boatyardblues · 18/06/2019 23:43

Did the mad, bad king kill himself by poking the pointy stick in his ear or has the chief secretary just concluded he’s gone totally coco loco and is beyond redemption? I couldn't work out if he was dead or sleeping when the courtier left him in that remote house.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 18/06/2019 23:44

PM me if you don’t want to post a spoiler.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 18/06/2019 23:49

Stand down! Looks like clarification will be forthcoming. 😄

OP posts:
Bea · 19/06/2019 06:20

Boatyard! 😂😂😂... Hope all clarified!

Bettys... D Day is exhausting! Its just one thing after another!... For Kim Kwang Young. Try The Guardians (netflix) if you haven't already... It's really really good! I was 😱and 🤔🤔 all the way through! It's a good puzzler! 👍

bettys · 19/06/2019 07:23

I tried The Guardians ages ago but didn’t finish the first ep, can’t remember why, probably time to give it another go!

boatyardblues · 19/06/2019 08:14

I tried Guardian too but I wasn’t in the right mood for it.

Anyway, let’s hear it for Wednesdays! 🎉 All our good, currently airing shows start to drop from teatime onwards. I am really looking forwards to settling down in front of the TV tonight. DH is out too, so no huffing about “yet another kdrama”. 😆

OP posts:
Bea · 19/06/2019 09:41

I'm using Ms Hammurabi to fill the gaps... it's really good and full of heart warming moments!... however i think the poos going to hit the fan soon!

Definitely give The Guardians another go... soooo want to add something but i don't want to spoil...!!!!!!

bettys · 19/06/2019 10:08

Ooh ooh ooh Bea is it early on in The Guardians? Don't spoil just yet I haven't even restarted. Which is better Kim Young Kwan? Guardians or D-Day ?

Managed to watch a bit more of Orange Marmalade on the train last night but it is a gap-filler, I am really looking forward to Hotel del Luna coming out, and also to catching up with the Wednesday Thursday on-air dramas. Couldn't resist & caught up with Secret Secretary over breakfast even though not all subs were up Grin. Have lots of work today so will try to resist until later.....

Bea · 19/06/2019 10:20

The Guardians!!! .... It's a twisty turny one.... revelations?...more later on.... and deffo towards the end...

Guardians vs D Day.?.. The Guardians definitely... Guardians has a definite storyline going on whereas DDay just has crisis after crisis! Honestly I felt like i'd been through an earthquake after getting through it!

Guardians does have one major niggle for me which i would like to see what you think of but only if you manage to get through it!... but i really enjoyed it

and... if this is any indication.... this is the only kdrama that dh and I have watched together right to the end... he watches bots and bobs but never intrigued enough to stay and watch ... obvs he had a light work load that week... but still....Grin

bettys · 19/06/2019 14:30

I was craving kimchi yesterday (probably Oceanwaves’s pics of food!) so decided to make some. Oceanwaves posted a recipe a few threads ago but I didn’t have all the ingredients so found a very basic recipe on BBC food and here it is! Not as good as the real thing but ok in a pinch
