It's here.

Eight seasons of love, hate, family, battles, history, mystery, myth and legend.

After laying waste to Kings' Landing, what next for Daenerys? Does destiny feel good when you kill thousands of innocents to reach it?

I will really miss these characters and their stories. Epic, must-watch television is rare. Will we ever see its like again?

And now our watch is ended.

I didn’t mind the ending although it could have done with being a bit more drawn out. An episode in between showing the lords coming together, the immediate aftermath of Dany’s death would have made it feel more complete.

I wish there could have been a happier end for Jon - he sacrificed so much and now can’t spend time with his family. Bran’s ‘it’s up to you’ when Jon asked if he should tell Arya and Sansa about his parentage now feels a bit callous. Did Bran know it would all lead to him being on the throne?

AnneOfAvonlea · 20/05/2019 06:40

Pretty sure that Bran sent John to the wall because he knew the Wildlings were there and that John would be happy, so it wasnt really a 'punishment' but the people in the south would think it was.

I'm happy with the episode.

The costumes and music were phenomenal throughout the whole series.

Only thing that irks slightly is that I never like the Bran character.

ThisIsTheEndgame · 20/05/2019 06:43

I have changed my mind a bit, at least it was a proper and fairly logical ending. Still a bit too happy ever after. Jon was happiest beyond the wall, it's no real punishment to him to go back North. My only question is why were Tormund and all the wildlings still at Castle Black? What were they all waiting for?

Coolcoolcoolcoolcool · 20/05/2019 06:44

It seems to me that bran is on the throne as a figurehead/pasty. He says I'll look for drogon and leave the rest up to you. I think he'll be doing that a lot, as he spent most of his time in winterfell away with the fairies.

Anyway, I really liked it. I would've liked Dany to have been alive for longer. I know that many people diss Emilia Clarke's acting but she was fantastic in this one. Doing the same old speech she's done a million times before but suddenly we are seeing it from the other side's point of view.

Coolcoolcoolcoolcool · 20/05/2019 06:45

Patsy not pasty Grin

ThisIsTheEndgame · 20/05/2019 06:50

EC was excellent. Same speech but a perfect tinge of complete, almost religious mania. I like how subtle the stabbing was. Just a "did I just hear that?" unsheathing sound. It's almost a shame we didn't see the scene where Jon strolls out is says "what's up guys, fyi, just killed Dany, Drogon has melted the throne and fucked off with the queens body. Shawarma anyone?"

UpToonGirl · 20/05/2019 06:54

I'm sorry but I didn't enjoy any of that - kept waiting for a twist or surprise. 10 years and it's gone out on a low for me. Dani's descent into madness, thinking she was justified in burning all those innocents just didn't ring true. Yes I could see her getting there at some point but not in the way it happened. I also don't believe for a second Jon would have defended her what so ever, Tyrion shouldn't have needed to nudge him.

Just blah.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 20/05/2019 07:09

I loved it. Very Lord of the Rings - loose ends tied up nicely. Really pleased with the whole thing. Looking forward to rewatching tonight for the details I missed

Hoggytat · 20/05/2019 07:10

Jon killed a mad queen to protect the people and as a consequence was hung out to dry. So did Jaime Lannister when he killed the mad king to protect the people of Kings Landing from wildfire.

The difference is that Jon was sent somewhere he feels at home, where he wanted to be, with his friend and his dire wolf.

Lweji · 20/05/2019 07:17

Did anyone notice how many titles Bronn had and Davos (?) making fun of it? Grin

costacoffeecup · 20/05/2019 07:18

Just finished!

There was totally a west wing reference 😀

costacoffeecup · 20/05/2019 07:19

Bran was ok actually as clearly Tyrion is the real ruler which is how it should be.

Lweji · 20/05/2019 07:22

It's a shame Jon was such a good killer. We could have seen Dany repent or something after being stabbed.

At the same time it's ironic that Jon was killed by stabbing by treason and went on to do the same to Dany.

Shame that there wasn't a doubt for a couple of seconds of who had stabbed who.

HigaDequasLuoff · 20/05/2019 07:23

Well I liked it. I can see why people will moan and that's part of why it's good. This was always about people being people, albeit in a fantasy setting, and that doesn't lead to a "satisfying" conclusion.

I agree Danny wasn't mad. This was just who she was, all along. She didn't need killing for being mad but for being the sort of person that thinks killing people who disagree with you is OK.

I loved the Nazi/fascist imagery, Drogon's wings opening behind D.

The pile of snowy rubble turning out to be Drogon was cool.

Drogon melting the iron throne in grief for his mummy and then carrying her away.

All brilliant. Love Drogon.

Sam suggesting democracy and everyone laughing at how ridiculous the idea is. But actually with Bran on the throne and Primogeniture no longer a thing, the new setup is a decent half way step towards democracy. If the kingship of the 6 kingdoms is now to be chosen on merit then I suspect that gradually the headships of the various great families will start to follow a similar pattern and something like a meritocracy will emerge that may not be particularly worse than democracy.

SweetSummerchild · 20/05/2019 07:25

So, Arya becomes Nymeria and Sansa becomes Lady. Bran becomes KIng at the dawn of the new Summer and Jon becomes a Ghost.

Brienne writes Jaime’s history into the White Book. Sam (sort of) writes the song of ice and fire.

Fans have been predicting this stuff for years. I’m guessing they are now going to start bitching about it. Be careful what you wish for!

Overall I thought it was a good ending to the series. I still hate Bronn and didn’t enjoy that ‘small council’ scene, but most of it made sense.

I’m so glad there was no ‘Tyrion and Sansa re-marry’.

Loopytiles · 20/05/2019 07:26

Would have been much better for the Unsullied to kill Jon upon discovering he’d killed Dany.

Bran: silly!

ElenadeClermont · 20/05/2019 07:26

As I said last week, D&D used a previously written GRRM scene for the Council according to the leaks: Egg or Aegon the Unlikely ascended the throne in a similar vein.
Bloodraven was sent to the Wall by Aegon the Unlikely for killing the Blackfyre representative during the Council.

Lweji · 20/05/2019 07:28

And it's a shame that Jon didn't go through the fire test.

My guess is that Drogon flew away with Dany go where the dragons were born and stood by her until it died of hunger.

Although, as it is, it leaves the possibility of a dragon returning eventually.

Loopytiles · 20/05/2019 07:29

Or sizzled by Drogon.

CodenameVillanelle · 20/05/2019 07:31

It was perfect!
I'm surprised so many of you are disappointed but I guess it was never going to live up to the hype but I loved it.

Daenarys went full tyrant and Jon stepped up and took her down. Drogon flying away with her was perfect. The lords and ladies deciding on Bran made sense. I know Bran's a weird character but he's a figurehead King. There was no way that Tyrion would have suggested Jon. Nobody wants another Targaryen and Jon's safety would be much better met by staying anonymous.
I think Sansa was sneaky by claiming the north as her kingdom after all the other lords had declared for Bran. But clever! They couldn't go back!

costacoffeecup · 20/05/2019 07:31

It was sort of a happy ending for Jon, he wanted to go north. He was never going to have an actual happy ending once he'd killed Dany as he had to live with that so made perfect sense he'd end up back with tormund and ghost.

Lweji · 20/05/2019 07:32

Or sizzled by Drogon

I don't think he'd have died from it, and I suspect Drogon knew it.

Having said that, if Jon had claimed the Iron Throne by sitting on it after the killing he may well have been a goner.

Ledehe · 20/05/2019 07:37

I hated it. I hated every bit of it except Ghost getting a pat at the end. What was the point? So Bran just fucking sat there knowing he was going to be king and let everyone kill each other. Fuck off. I feel like I've wasted years of my life loving something for it to be ended all Hollywood

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 20/05/2019 07:38

I assume that Tyrion deliberately pushed a young but non-interventionist candidate to give the maximum amount of time to set up a more-or-less self-sustaining system of bureaucracy. If you can manage fifty years of stable Civil Servant-led government which runs itself with a figurehead monarch then that maximises (not guarantees) your chances for the future.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 20/05/2019 07:43

At the same time it's ironic that Jon was killed by stabbing by treason and went on to do the same to Dany.

Yes, and they also thought they were doing the right thing for the realm. They thought Jon was betraying all they stood for and putting the 7 kingdoms at risk by letting the Wildlings through.

Melisandre also had a cause she strongly believed in which involved murdering innocent people.

A strong theme seems to be that murder can be easily justified if you believe it’s for ‘the greater good’.
