The trick with the porn is not really about whether that would be the thing that would persuade a room of parents to support 4star......... It's more - in a room full of people who wanted to like Viv, who turned up to support her and who were disappointed that she didn't know much compared to other candidates, how does she turn it around? By changing the subject with an easy win and promises that aren't true but sound appealing.

That's very insightful. I completely didn't get that but you are 100% right. It was nonsense, on some level the whole room knew it was nonsense but it was a bandwagon to jump back on because they just really wanted to like her. I was watching it through my eyes, I'd think it was nonsense and just find her even more ridiculous, but for people who were into her, it's just something to cling to.

On the third episode, I know British politics is so partisan that it would never happen but there would be a really, really obvious way for Labour and the Tories to pull the rug out from under her. Work together and make her tiny few MPs meaningless. It's happening in Ireland since the last general election. Neither of the two main parties had enough seats to form anything like a government unless every nearly single minor party and independent came on board with them. So rather than try to deal with that kind of potential instability, they decided to work together. And it's mostly been fine. If Labour and the Tories weren't so short sighted, they'd do it, even if just to spite her after her "I'll decide" speech. It would essentially end extremism on the spot.

This is what should have happened in the European elections, though. The Remain parties got more votes added together than the Brexit party but are so reluctant to join together that the Brexit party are triumphing over their 'victory'.

And child protection is an important issue to these people, in a way that export tariffs are not. Very Trumpesque.

But that means conceding that you have much in common and can collaborate. The first party to suggest that that's true in any general sense would be committing political suicide. It's the "I agree with Dave" problem.

thenightsky · 31/05/2019 11:09

I've just started watching this and really enjoying it so far. Although I have to turn the sound down and put sub-titles on due the awful grating music. Why do they have to ruin good stuff with terrible noise?

As I said it I doubt it couldn't happen in British politics. But it is happening in Ireland right now. The two main parties who have been opposed to each other essentially since the civil war in 22-23 formed a joint government 3 years ago. It took over two months from the election to reach an agreement but once they eventually accepted it as in their best interests and committed to it, they made it work. They squabble and posture a bit as each party would prefer to come out on top in the next election but they have still managed to work together on major internal issues to see the country end the constitutional ban on abortion, remove the concept of blasphemy from law, make it possible for non-biological parents in same sex couples register as an equal parent in law and now reform the very restrictive divorce laws. While also presenting a constant united front in protecting the country from the most destructive aspects of Brexit. It's amazingly doable once the initial reluctance has been moved past because ultimately, they are just the two cheeks of the same arse.

I'd say you are in a tiny minority there. The music is an absolute highlight of the show for most people who mention it.

Agreed.

TheFirstOHN · 31/05/2019 21:55

Stephen's behaviour in the last scene seemed out of character, especially considering his new job.

SimonJT · 31/05/2019 21:56

It did, however he had to listen to his family slag his dad off for cheating, while he is doing the same thing, so he probably cracked.

Gwenhwyfar · 01/06/2019 14:32

" So people can't feel sympathy for anyone else any more they're richer then me and had a nicer house so I couldn't care less that they just lost their life savings good enough for them "

Look at it the other way around: I'd argue that it's not nice to complain about losing a million in front of people on a much lower income or to complain about 'only' having 89k when that is really a lot of money.

QueenOfTheAndals · 04/06/2019 21:53

Fucking hell Shock

TheFirstOHN · 04/06/2019 21:59

That is one of the most powerful and distressing scenes I have ever seen on television. I can't stop crying. And I am not a crier.

Does anyone else feel very, very anxious after each episode? It is very good but so close to home I find it terrifying.
