Bloody hell! We've just watched episode 1. That was intense.

I'm a bit shocked.

OP posts:
LoadsaBlusher · 30/05/2019 23:01

Surely this show will win awards
It completely deserves to
It has opened my eyes and I have researched so much

twitterbird · 30/05/2019 23:04

It is incredible television and as harrowing as it is I have I feel like my eyes have been opened.

LoadsaBlusher · 30/05/2019 23:05

Sorry , dropped phone whilst feeding baby - I meant to write have researched so much whilst watching this program.
It has really opened my eyes to what truly went on back then .
I think it’s such a valuable educational program .
It must have been quite emotionally draining acting in this show too .

LoadsaBlusher · 30/05/2019 23:08

I read that the soundtrack of the program consists of real noises from pipes and internal noises of Latvian power stations . The composer / sound track engineers made these noises into a haunting sound effect
It makes it quite chilling on top of the real life factor .

IntoValhalla · 31/05/2019 07:38

Loadsa can’t say I’ve paid much attention to the soundtrack, but I will have a good listen when I watch the next episode!!

FannyFeatures · 31/05/2019 09:49

They discussed the soundtrack on the podcast (highly recommend btw, it's my first ever podcast and am really enjoying it!).

They wanted to keep it minimal and atmospheric rather than influencing feelings through it which is very cleverly done I think.

HerondaleDucks · 31/05/2019 09:57

@Ilove you are awe inspiring.
I definitely feel I need to do something now to help these people, especially as they are still suffering the effects 33 years later!

MockerstheFeManist · 31/05/2019 13:06

The "Robot" thing may be a linguistic confusion.

In Russian, (and the original Czech,) 'robot' means worker.

@IntoValhalla They could not ask for US help, because the US was busy bombing Tripoli at the same time, also considering to build a Star Wars defence system. The whole world was on the brink of war.

The UK asked for no help at Windscale (otherwise known as Sellafield) en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windscale_fire and the US was not exactly a shining example of competence with Three Mile Island en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Mile_Island_accident.

A lot of this stuff was on the Cocom list en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coordinating_Committee_for_Multilateral_Export_Controls: Western countries did not allow high-tech stuff to be exported to the Warsaw pact.

ElenadeClermont · 01/06/2019 17:50

1986 is also midway through the Soviet war with Afghanistan (1979 to 1989) which ultimately helped bankrupt the Union en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet%E2%80%93Afghan_War

NigesFakeWalkingStick · 01/06/2019 18:59

Just starting watching (up to ep 3) so placemarking.

One of my friends has gone to Pripyat. I've read and watched a lot about it in the past. The drama is really good so far, very harrowing but to be expected.

PetrichorRain · 01/06/2019 21:02

Just watched episode four. I really hated how long they dwelled on the shooting of the pets. So sad.

And I was so angry at and sorry for the fireman’s wife when she lost her baby.

HermioneWeasley · 03/06/2019 21:43

The 90 seconds showing the men on the roof clearing the graphite was extraordinary, brilliant, gripping TV

HannahB64 · 03/06/2019 23:24

As someone who had second hand experience with the events themselves, I just want to say how moved I am by this show.
Wow.

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 04/06/2019 15:08

I'm steeling myself to watch this.

The dog-shooting cannot have been as extensive as it was meant to be because the exclusion zone is now full of feral dogs and cats. I can't say I blame the liquidators for not finishing that particular job - they would have been worried sick about their health, exhausted and probably depressed by what they saw. The last think they would have wanted to do was shoot family pets.

DH (electrical engineer) has friends who work in nuclear power stations. I'd be interested to know what they thought.

Ginger1982 · 04/06/2019 15:21

Gosh I wouldn't have recognised Stellan!

Jared Harris is good.

The puppies were too much for me! 😭

FannyFeatures · 04/06/2019 15:59

I cheated and just watched the final episode today when I had an hour's peace after work. WOW!

I'll be watching it again with DH tonight but i thought the whole series was really well done and i'd happy repeat it despite its many grim moments.

Limer · 04/06/2019 16:12

I’ve also just watched the final episode. I already knew plenty about the old Soviet Union and Chernobyl, that they did everything on the cheap, considered people as expendable resources, falsified results, lied to make the USSR look better, freely broke rules in order to hit stupid productivity targets, etc. But the dramatization of everything, down to the words spoken by real people at the time, really hit home just how gross corruption and incompetence can have such devastating consequences. All those unnecessary deaths.

Brilliant series, I’ll definitely be downloading and watching it again.

A farming report from just 7 years ago.

Restrictions on hundreds of Welsh and Cumbrian sheep farms dating back to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster have finally been lifted - 26 years on.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said the controls were not "proportionate" to the "very low risk" and removing them would not compromise the consumer.

The disaster in 1986 affected 10,000 UK farms, including 334 in north Wales.

The movement of sheep was heavily restricted after the nuclear disaster.

Before farmers could sell livestock, the animals' radiation levels had to be monitored. If they were above a certain level, the sheep were moved to another area and the levels had to subside before they could be sold and consumed.

The lifting of the restrictions comes after a 12-week consultation with key stakeholders including consumers, affected farmers, farming unions and trade bodies.

The FSA board agreed to lift the controls from 1 June, 2012.

Ed Bailey, National Farmers' Union Cymru president, said: "It cannot be anything else apart from good news. We've had the assurances that the product is completely safe for human consumption and that's the main thing."

'Bureaucracy'
Farmer Peter Jones, from Capel Curig, in Conwy, has around 1,000 sheep. Last year, 60 of his sheep exceeded radiation levels and had to be moved to lower ground. In 2010, just 11 of his flock were affected.

Lonecatwithkitten · 04/06/2019 18:00

I have previously made blankets for Woolly Hugs for their children of Chernobyl project.
Watching the dramatisation has made me revisit their project even though I am not able to make a blanket this year.
30 years later Belarus still suffers terribly and bring this children to the UK for a month each for 4 to 5 years can dramatically improve their life expectancy. But many of these children live in abject poverty and arrive in the UK with the clothes on their back.
As well as the blankets Woolly Hugs has an Amazon wish list of items to send the children back with.

If you can't make a blanket, but this program has moved you to want to do something to help their wish list is a good place. There are items for just a few pounds.

Redhanger · 04/06/2019 18:03

I’m struggling with it I must admit.

I think because I don’t know enough about the real event to ‘get’ it.

ElenadeClermont · 04/06/2019 18:24

To be fair Cumbria was badly affected by Windscale as well, bless them www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1516596/Cumbria-still-affected-by-fire-at-Windscale-nuclear-reactor-49-years-on.html

VictoriaBun · 04/06/2019 18:46

When Chernobly blew the alarms went off at Sellafield.
