We have some lovely occasional posters who have lived in Korea, are Korean or have Korean partners/family members who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too thick to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together. Some of the regular favourite actors have been abbreviated too for speed/efficiency, although “him off Black” seems to have stuck for Song Seung-Heon. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

Averting my eyes so I don’t get spoiled for HPL.

I’m just popping in to say that Wen Li is shaping up to be my favourite character in Well Intentioned Love. His face is so expressive and his WTF face reminds me of Grommit when Wallace has said something particularly stupid.

Sigh... I welled up a couple of time in HPL it was mostly just lovely and Eun Gi was so sweet. Am I wrong in hoping for a linkup between Candy & Eun Gi?

It was good weepy stuff tonight. Propwise, are we talking the late birthday present? It was grotesque.

I don’t want to spoil you, so I’ll be oblique but the combination of Wen Li and his new housemate is comedy gold. The episode where he is instructed to run an urgent errand to the shops was brilliant, for all sorts of reasons. He’s one of my favourite characters in quite some time because he’s so unexpected.

Yes we are, it was ghastly, I couldn’t believe just how bad it was. Last weeks effort was a bit dodgy but this was breathtakingly awful. She can act though 🤣

There’s a plot twist in Well Intentioned Love about 10 episodes in that I’m still struggling to get my head around. I’m not sure its the kind of metaphorical bombshell that can be overcome IRL but they’re giving it a bloody good go.

Yay! FL has found her spine.

The main lesson I’m learning from this C-drama is never accept a drink from a man, however nice he seems. 🤔

Bea - How close are Mandarin and Cantonese as languages? Do they have common features like, say, Spanish and Italian? Or are they completely different, like Italian and Japanese? If similar, is there any cross-over in the character sets?

Yes similar... My dad could speak both... I think it's not uncommon to speak both... I can't even speak one! 😭... I find mandarin quite hard to listen to... There's a lot of ssshhh... And urrrr sounds... It's quite a harsh sound I find!... Cantonese is much prettier!... And softer... Especially my southern China Cantonese (Taishanese)... This is quite interesting Taishanese vs Cantonese

Thanks Bea. That’s interesting. I may try a bit of Taiwanese and Cantonese drama to listen for differences. Can you recommend a Cantonese drama on Netflix or Viki?

How many sleeps now until BTS? Is it two or three & what is your current excitement level?

Watching this Mando-melodrama, something’s off about clothing. ML always in a three-piece suit and FL in sleeveless mini dress. ML is either quietly melting inside his suit or FL is freezing. Given that all the research says women feel the cold more than men, I feel bad for the women. They are also so slight, their surface area to volume ratios must be child-like and even worse if they are cold. Ah Ran is so especially waif-like and ghostly pale, I want to sit her down with a milkshake and a hearty dinner. She reminds me of my painfully anorexic friend in school. 😕

Other observations before I forget. - Homosexuality seems to be more discussed, or recognised, than in kdrama. There is a gay subplot/misunderstanding at the outset.

• There are more overt sexual overtones, though it cuts away from any action in a similar way to kdrama.
• I don’t recall menstruation being mentioned ever in kdrama. It’s right in your face in this, with multiple mentions/characters.

Boatyard! Sorry! No recs! Not managed to get through any yet!.. I start and then give up!... I started Golden Eyes on Viki... It had an interesting storyline but I couldn't cope with the style... And it sounded like they'd over dubbed it! Production not as good as our beloved kdrama... I'm also going to have a go with The Guardian on Viki as well... Read good things about it!

Yes they've arrived at the Hammersmith (where bgt is live from)... They're supposed to be performing in the results show at 9.30pm so God knows what they're doing backstage... Watching all this crap! It's soooo embarrassing! 🇬🇧😩
