A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, but there other sources, including Dramabus and AmazonPrime.

Previous Threads, with discussion of what we’ve enjoyed and what to avoid:

Thread 4 (previous threads linked from OP of this one)

Some suggestions for shows that we’ve enjoyed - those marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired:

Because This Is My First Life (Viki)*
Black (Netflix)*
Chicago Typewriter (Viki)*
Don’t Dare to Dream (Netflix, or as Jealousy Incarnate on Viki)*
Fight For My Way (Viki/Drama bus)*
Goblin (Viki)
Healer (Netflix)*
He is Psychometric (Viki)
Her Private Life (Viki)*
His Master’s Sun (Netflix)
I Hear Your Voice (Netflix /Viki)
Just Between Lovers (Viki)*
Last Train to Busan - film (Amazon Prime)
Live (Netflix)
Love from a Star (netflix)*
My Strange Hero (Viki)
Pinocchio (Netflix)
Pride & Prejudice (Netflix)*
Prison Playbook (Netflix)*
Romance is the Bonus Book (Netflix)*
She Was Pretty (Dramabus/Netflix)*
Something in the Rain (Netflix)
Strong Girl Bong Soon (Netflix)
Suspicious Partner (netflix)*
W (Viki & Netflix)*
What’s Up With Secretary Kim (Viki)*
While You Were Sleeping (viki)*
You are my Destiny (Netflix)

We have some lovely occasional posters who have lived in Korea, are Korean or have Korean partners/family members who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references.

If you want to know your oppas from your unnis try this helpful guide to Korean terms of address and honorifics.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, film and kpop when the mood takes us. To get to grips with the lingo, try dramaloveaddicts.proboards.com/thread/24/korean-word-day?page=1

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too thick to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together. Some of the regular favourite actors have been abbreviated too for speed/efficiency, although “him off Black” seems to have stuck for Song Seung-Heon. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

I’m enjoying Jung Hae In in One Spring Night.

He's the one good thing in it so far. The rest is a wee bit dull. I'm going to take a look at some other new ones, plus I need a binge-er for Bank Holiday weekend. Any recs?

boatyardblues · 24/05/2019 09:45

My Fellow Citizens! Honestly, it’s really good fun.

OP posts:
bettys · 24/05/2019 10:25

It's on my list Wink

Might have a film weekend, just found this film by chance on Amazon Prime although it's not listed in JKH's imdb profile

Amor Fati Missing You

bettys · 24/05/2019 17:46

I’m going to have a HHKJW & JKH weekend and binge The Guest

Let me know when you’ve watched Antique boatyard 😡😆🤔

boatyardblues · 24/05/2019 17:53

Will do. Been snarled in BH motorway traffic for the last several hours. 😕 The odds of us reaching our destination at a sensible time are dwindling. I may have to save Antique Bakery for tomorrow when I am less grumpy.

OP posts:
bettys · 24/05/2019 17:56

On the other hand it may soothe your ravaged soul...

bettys · 24/05/2019 17:58

Sympathies re traffic, really takes the shine off a BH getaway. Hope you’re going somewhere nice with good WiFi & wine

boatyardblues · 24/05/2019 18:02

DH has downloaded 9 episodes of Game of Thrones in case the wifi is crap because it times out on NowTV next week - he’s only recently started watching, so is way behind. Suits me, because he’s so busy watching that he’s stopped grumbling about my steady diet of kdrama.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 24/05/2019 18:26

Gloom. Traffic is shocking. 😕 Hopes of HH KJW binge fading....

bettys · 24/05/2019 19:24

😔 oh poo where are you headed? I’m now quietly relieved we are staying home having a ‘sorting out’ weekend

Bea · 24/05/2019 19:29

I'm out at a football thing this eve! No drama for me! 😭
Finished Touch Your Heart... And it was lovely! A real bonus as I wasn't expecting much at all! I really liked how they were several small sub plots that seemed to get very satisfactorily solved within 3 eps... Though I would have liked the stalker plot to go on a little more... It finished before it even started!
I loved the FL... Great character!... And ML... Not particularly swoonsome to me... But very engaging and again... Loved his character!... Great office staff... Pacey... Just got on with it! And tied up very neatly at the end! 😁👍👍👍👍

boatyardblues · 24/05/2019 19:43

Prefer not to say, Betty. Suffice it to say, it is a popular destination and there are lots of holiday makers on the move.

OP posts:
bettys · 24/05/2019 19:55

Bea - agree totally! Stalker plot could’ve been a bit more dramatic, liked how the office liaisons resolved and really rather loved the premiere bit at the end, subtle though it was. Just a nice drama really!

Boatyard - fair enough! Am amused by your DH downloading GoT & being a bit behind. My DH actually said as we were watching the final ep ( having watched it with me through all 8 series) “Who’s Cersei?” 😱😱😱

boatyardblues · 24/05/2019 21:19

I’m now crashed on the sofa at our destination after Dominos pizza. If we can just turf the kids to bed, I can get started on my Korean film stash. Wine soon. Wine

boatyardblues · 24/05/2019 22:23

Hmmm. The subtitles are half off the bottom of the screen. 😩 The batteries are dead on the DVD player remote here, so I need to get new ones tomorrow and have a play with the settings. If I can’t sort it, I will be looking for a refund.

OP posts:
bettys · 24/05/2019 22:40

Nooooo how disappointing! 😫

boatyardblues · 24/05/2019 22:57

Have resorted to catching up on Abyss on the owner’s smart TV Netflix. I have created a separate profile so I don’t bugger up the owner’s with kdrama. Grin

OP posts:
bettys · 24/05/2019 23:00

😉very considerate of you....just how much kdrama are you planning to watch? 😂😂

boatyardblues · 24/05/2019 23:04

It honestly doesn’t take much to crock the Netflix algorithm. DH still hasn’t forgiven me. Blush

bettys · 25/05/2019 09:32

Amor Fati Missing You on Amazon Prime is a quiet little film about loss. JKH is rather good in it. He's got range as an actor.
Not sure what the sub-plot was about, may have to watch again.

boatyardblues · 25/05/2019 10:12

I don’t have Amazon Prime. 😕 Sounds good.

gingerbiscuitandacuppatea · 25/05/2019 11:52

I finished I Hear your voice a little while back, which was v nice but didn't quite as satisfying an end as I'd hoped. I'm now half way through Healer on your recommendation and really enjoying it. It's got elements of Superman and Arrow, but lovely romance. Infuriating how he hasn't told her he is Healer, when she turns him down as bok-su (? I'm really bad with names). That warehouse must be freezing and he definitely needs someone to care for him.

DD gave up on boys over flowers and started Sassy go go which is not really keeping my attention -very school drama. She watched some healer when I had it on and now wants to add that in her watch list too. Hopefully we can find something good to watch together over half term.

gingerbiscuitandacuppatea · 25/05/2019 11:55

Oh and dh and I enjoyed the film mentioned ages ago Red Carpet.

I can't keep up with all the various shows you are watching. Don't you get confused when you have lots on the go at once?

bettys · 25/05/2019 12:00

Boatyard you can rent it on Amazon Prime Wink

bettys · 25/05/2019 12:01

Sorry, meant ordinary Amazon, think it's £4.49
