I agree Home, I felt very sorry for Lucas, he did amazing to go back the next day.

Homefireburn1ng · 16/04/2019 22:23

I’m shocked at the predudice on both sides. Have taken tolerance and a society without predudice for granted. Had no idea some areas were still so polarised and contained such unpleasant views.

woodhill · 16/04/2019 22:24

Yes my point was about Lucas not Auden, the 2 female cousins were goady and overbearing.

Homefireburn1ng · 16/04/2019 22:25

Among I think the tv makers should have stepped in. Not ok, you could see how upset he/ she was but clearly making good tv was more important.

TheFirstOHN · 16/04/2019 22:31

Watching it now with DS3 (Y10, white British, attends a school where more than half the pupils are Asian and the remainder are a diverse mix).

He had no idea that some schools (and some areas of the country) are this segregated.

Amongstthetallgrass · 16/04/2019 22:41

Home tbh Kirens behaviour towards Lucas was quite extreme and I think the producers should have curbed it because she may get a lot of online abuse. I thought the producers should have more responsibility than to air Keran in that light due to her being so young.

AventaRizon · 16/04/2019 22:41

I found it surprising that practically none of them recognised the national anthem straight away, and of the few who did, nobody knew the words. We were all taught it at primary school - doesn't that happen now?

And the opinion that the Queen and the national anthem were 'only for white people' - why wasn't that properly challenged?

It appeared that the 'white' group of children ended up feeling that they had to change their opinions to accommodate the other group's views, but the same wasn't true the other way round.

Perhaps that was just the way the programme was edited though.

Amongstthetallgrass · 16/04/2019 22:45

Kiren is getting hammered on Twitter now.

nevernotstruggling · 16/04/2019 22:46

I think Lucas was really rude. I quite liked Kiran.

I resent the transing at 13? 14? Being normalised

Homefireburn1ng · 16/04/2019 22:49

What on Earth are you on about. In the words of the child he/ she just knew. Was referring to his/ her sexuality, shouldn’t have to justify it or apologise to anybody. Certainly shouldn’t be held up to fight the anti trans agenda. It’s a child.

Still18atheart · 16/04/2019 22:50

Aventa I thought that about the Queen . And I thought Pakistan was part of the Commonwealth. And that wasn’t mentioned at all

RandomMess · 16/04/2019 22:50

Seems a shame that so much was edited out especially the end ceremony.

Homefireburn1ng · 16/04/2019 22:54

Think it would take more than a ceremony to put right the views expressed from both schools. Was really shocking.

ghostyslovesheets · 16/04/2019 22:56

My dd was singing along to the national anthem but I’m not sure I’m hugely proud of that - she gave a brilliant speech about a Trump and anti Muslim feeling and was a bit gutted it wasn’t included

Please don’t think Lucas was left to deal with that by the way they had support on hand the whole time and had huge debriefed every day - while it wasn’t nice it was dealt with

Homefireburn1ng · 16/04/2019 22:57

He/ she should never have been put in that position for viewing figures. Wasn’t just once either.

Homefireburn1ng · 16/04/2019 23:02

And why didn’t we see the “ I just don’t like gay people” comment dealt with.

nevernotstruggling · 16/04/2019 23:05

@Homefireburn1ng agree

FoxSquadKitten · 16/04/2019 23:44

I can’t believe that this is England in 2019.
I feel that we have regressed somewhat.

Totally agree. We were more educated/integrated/tolerant as children in the 70s ffs. This programme was shocking 🤦‍♀️

purpleme12 · 16/04/2019 23:46

This was shocking. I couldn't believe it. They all came across so uneducated.

AventaRizon · 17/04/2019 00:20

They all came across so uneducated

Yep - that's the National Curriculum for you.

Homefireburn1ng · 17/04/2019 06:40

But all children aren’t like that and yes the lack of education struck me too. Surely both schools have let their pupils down on that score. We live in an area with far less of a multicultural make up. My dc go to school in a non affluent city and they have a few black and Asian friends one or two of whom are Muslim. I can assure you they are hugely better educated, more tolerant and integrated. I have never ever heard such horrendous racism from either side or ignorance.Race doesn’t seem to be an issue at all. Naively I had no idea such polarised views and racism still existed in the U.K.It was the most depressing thing I’ve watched in agesConfusedIs it just that part of the country? Surely London isn’t like that?

Aeroflotgirl · 17/04/2019 06:49

It might change, when the Birmingham students have to spend time with the Tamworth students, and they will probably have to fit in. Both sides views were shocking tbh, the p word still being used, and negative stereotypes about the Birmingham students, and the negative views from the Birmingham students regarding the Tamworth students. The child who was bisexual and trans was old enough to decide about their lives, had a right to feel comfortable. I am shocked that the Birmingham students did not know the National Anthem of the country that they live in, yes it is relevant to them and not just for 'white people' Hmm. Maybe the Tamworth students feel the same way about it, as they don't sing it in schools anymore. I liked the cousins Uncle, he was very measured and balanced and gave some good advice.

Homefireburn1ng · 17/04/2019 06:54

The girls were getting their homophobia from somewhere. Why weren’t their parents filmed?

hideandgoseek · 17/04/2019 06:55

Someone from emmerdale just lost their job for years old homophobic and racist tweets. Will these comments affect the kids futures like that?

Homefireburn1ng · 17/04/2019 07:02

That is a thought.

I’m amazed Ofsted haven’t picked up on these views in both schools. I thought teaching Britishness was inspected and racism/ homophobia are surely safeguarding issues. There will be gay children in both schools. Society and the U.K. isn’t as polarised as regards race. How are both school preparing those children for life beyond the school gates?

Some of that language I thought was long gone.Shock
