Despite the ultimate rebuttal coming from HP, FB has been so restrained in the last few episodes. It was almost always him seeking her out.

ComputerSaysMo · 08/04/2019 15:03

But I still feel it was a real cop out ending his story like that - what about all the stuff he'd seemed to want to say? Why couldn't he love God and Fleabag by leaving the priesthood but not giving up his religion? I just wasn't convinced that he was so devoted to God and/or not fucked up enough not to go running back to Fleabag at some point. The ending was such that they both seemed to know it was completely over, and I didn't buy that.

I agree with this. He spent weeks with her (or even months - officiants are often booked quite a way in advance), had already made an initial drunken slip that warned him he was tempted, then went back entirely sober and made a clear-headed, deliberate decision to succumb. I was surprised and pleased that the episode opened with the next morning - that could have been incredibly awkward (like the bus stop, the first time) but it wasn’t.

I am not surprised he is not ready to fuck up his entire life and career over one night. I would be very surprised if he remained a priest all his life, though.

The symbolism of him telling her to stay away on the same damned bus bench annoyed me, though. That does smack of having his cake and eating it. (Not that she seems to have been the person who had trouble staying away, but hey ho...)

The80sweregreat · 08/04/2019 15:08

Transport is used so much in comedy dramas / soaps to symbolise people going somewhere or moving on, or even coming back. It's usually trains or planes so it's odd she used buses and bus stops.
I hate buses myself but I do use them. They never show up. Or it could be symbolic; wait for one bus and two show up at once; her ideal man is round the corner! ( I should get out more)

MissLadyM · 08/04/2019 15:12

Not reading thread!!! How have you seen it??? I thought it was on tonight! I want to see it now!!!!!!!

The80sweregreat · 08/04/2019 15:15

I found the Fox thing funny ; he was scared of the Fox the other episode so she sent it after him. Slight revenge there. That's why I know she'll be ok! Bless her.
The dad should have called her a cab too.
Typical , let her walk home alone at round graffiti bus stops late at night.
( annoyed at dad)

Connieston · 08/04/2019 15:17

Please @MumsnetTowers can we have FWB on for a web chat? SO MANY QUESTIONS. AND CRUSH ALSO.

HoraceCope · 08/04/2019 15:20

oh he was crying too Sad

I thought this too! 😀

Re the dad not calling a cab for her though, she wanted to take the bus with HP in the first place so that wasn’t entirely her dad’s fault she was left stranded in the end. But yeah, I’m annoyed with her weak dad too.

maeb · 08/04/2019 15:27

I just watched it again - I'm still heartbroken!

I kind of knew she would be on her own but okay at the end. But honestly, I'm gutted that he chose a lonely life over love with our FB.

What a cast, eh Flowers Flowers I think PWB and Andrew Scott are just amazing.

Ah well, in maeb-world, he'll come to his senses in a few weeks and they'll live happily ever after, living off the profits of the guinea pig cafe franchise (if Stephanie hasn't already eaten Hilary).

hopefullybettersoon · 08/04/2019 15:34

In my fantasy world he got her pregnant on their night together, so he has to leave the church, and they have lots of babies and live happily ever after

IntentsandPorpoises · 08/04/2019 15:41

No I want her to have a much happier life than the drudgery of babies and children. That would be a waste.

The80sweregreat · 08/04/2019 15:45

That Pam at his church would have gone for her for taking him away though! Lol. Maybe it's for the best in the end. Could have been too tricky.

pancaketosser · 08/04/2019 15:50

Did the Priest not say that he felt like the foxes were after him personally (or something like that) a few episodes back?

I loved that it was Claire that did 'a show' at the wedding and not FB.

ComputerSaysMo · 08/04/2019 15:53

I kind of knew she would be on her own but okay at the end. But honestly, I'm gutted that he chose a lonely life over love with our FB.

I kind of wished she had been the one to tell him not to renounce his life and had “broken his heart,” having decided that she didn’t feel more powerful after all.

I do think it’s sad that she finally loved someone after her mother and Boo and was rejected again.

ComputerSaysMo · 08/04/2019 15:55

Did the Priest not say that he felt like the foxes were after him personally (or something like that) a few episodes back?

Yes, and there was some joke about if he hadn’t found the church he’d be a fox boy, or something like that.

SlightlySleepy · 08/04/2019 16:03

I didn't know what i wanted from the ending, but this was perfect. It would have been sad if he'd have given up his career, his vows to God and everything he'd worked for, for a relationship that might not last. Also from her perspective it's nice she wasn't completed by a man.

I was totally sure there'd be a bust up at the wedding, and petty sure they wouldn't actually get married. But in the end i was glad that they got married because despite our dislike of the GM, and the fact that she was metal, the dad wanted her. He could see what she was like but wanted her anyway. That's his decision to make.

merrymouse · 08/04/2019 16:06

Yes, absolutely, WE NEED A WEB CHAT. (But doesn't have to be PWB - would also love Sian Clifford).

Why couldn't he love God and Fleabag by leaving the priesthood but not giving up his religion?

And apparently he does love Fleabag, so what is up with that? Wasn't he supposed to only love one thing?

I think FB's relationships with her family reached satisfactory conclusions. Loved the bit about Claire running through an airport for FB.

It also seemed that FB managed to separate her father's relationship with Godmother from her relationship with her parents. It seems that FB has always had a slightly fraught relationship with her father, and her father didn't have a perfect relationship with her mother. However FB seems to have reclaimed her own relationship with her mother.

However, I'm not convinced that you can go from 'my life will be fucked if I have sex with you ' to 'I love God and I love you too, and that's fine' in one night. I don't see how they could have reached a point where they were together at the end of episode 6 (Too neat, too romcom, too much pressure on the relationship), but I'm also sceptical about them both reaching a point of mature acceptance.

Connieston · 08/04/2019 16:08

I agree it was a sensitive piece of writing showing dad and stepmother oddly fitted together. He didn't want a "fun" wife, he hadn't liked the FB-esque chaotic aspects to his first wife. Stepmother' controlling aspects were probably comforting by contrast. He was awkward and blunt, probably irritating as hell to live with, like stepmother. He was not a victim. It would be so easy to ruin the wedding with tantrums. That it wasn't, and that FB made peace somewhat by coming to the rescue was extremely impressive plot wise.

merrymouse · 08/04/2019 16:11

Ah well, in maeb-world, he'll come to his senses in a few weeks and they'll live happily ever after, living off the profits of the guinea pig cafe franchise

I think he needs to go away for a couple of years, sort out his issues, realise that he is using the priesthood as a form of escape, get another job and THEN meet FB again. Also, by that point PWB might have come to her senses and decided to write a third series.

Connieston · 08/04/2019 16:14

Id love a FB spin off. Which characters would you want to see more of? I'd love to see uptight Claire taking Finland by storm. Or the chronicles of stepmother and her increasingly sexually inappropriate artwork.

Connieston · 08/04/2019 16:15

Ooo or life before boo and mum died. A prequel!!!

merrymouse · 08/04/2019 16:15

Exactly.

SlightlySleepy · 08/04/2019 16:15

Haha

The80sweregreat · 08/04/2019 16:18

The painting she did of the girls wasn't that wonderful and didn't have much of a mention.
Maybe she realised it was a bit cruel?

Roomba · 08/04/2019 16:32

God, that portrait of Fleabag and Claire!
