Discussion about this on Radio 4 S early this morning about priests, with a former priest who had fallen in love and eventually left the church. His perspective was that normally when a priest forms a romantic bond the woman is left waiting for years, not willing to force the man she loves to choose.

HoraceCope · 14/04/2019 11:53

on radio 4 wow, sounds interesting. what time was it?

It’ll be funny to see James Bond breaking the fourth wall Grin

RuffleCrow · 14/04/2019 13:00

Oh good, Horace, maybe she can edit out all the 1950s sexism while she's at it!

RosemaryTelephoneOperator · 14/04/2019 13:22

I don't think there were hints of HP being a sex addict.

He's flawed alright but he's just looking for peace. He loves God because it's given him peace. His role as a "father" gives him purpose.

RosaWaiting · 14/04/2019 13:27

Rosemary I was puzzled where people got the sex addict thing from as well.

Tinkoschminko · 14/04/2019 13:34

HP wasn’t a sex addict. I don’t buy into the idea that FB was either. She was highly sexed because she’d been indoctrinated to believe that her power was her sexuality and that was where she found affirmation in S1. It’s the message we sent all girls and women - particularly those feeling disclocated. We’re taught to find our absent value in men.

ComputerSaysMo · 14/04/2019 13:36

Wow, that Radio 4 interview was really interesting! Lots of nuance in the views of the married ex-priest, though not much credence given to the media “he’s just a manipulative muppet who does this all the time,” POV.

fruitbrewhaha · 14/04/2019 21:19

I really couldn't believe that she loved him. Or he her. It's all very romantic but an anthiest would not have a lot lot in common with a catholic priest and vice versa. FB would never have been interested in him if he gave it all up for her, not a chance. It was just the forbidden.

iklboo · 14/04/2019 21:30

Maybe they meant 'I love you' not necessarily in the romantic way?

RuffleCrow · 14/04/2019 21:32

People with different religious beliefs fall in love all the time. It's not your whole personality, it's a facet. Some people want a partner exactly like them, other people go down the 'opposites attract route'. And actually aside from God/No God their personalities were actually very similar.

A couple of TV recommendations:

1). 'The Town'. First TV series by the writer of Dr Foster. A bit like JK Rowling's 'A Casual Vacancy' but with more suspicious death. Andrew Scott plays Mark who returns home to a small provincial (sadly not Irish) town following the double suicide of his parents. Mainly about the dark underside of small town life, but he also gets to meet an old flame. Not streaming, but available for purchase.

2). 'Call My Agent'. French comedy drama series about an Actors' Agency in Paris. In some ways a more upmarket, French version of Extras - different French actors play themselves each week. Haven't got to the end of the first series yet, but so far at least one father daughter/relationship is farcically worse than Fleabag's. Netflix

RosemaryTelephoneOperator · 15/04/2019 20:53

I now love The Machine. #TheStag

RosaWaiting · 15/04/2019 23:18

I wasn't a huge fan of The Town.

I wouldn't have watched The Stag without Andrew, but the whole concept of The Machine was good fun!

when Fleabag first meets Priest and says "are you really a priest" I think she's asking because she's quite horrified and doesn't want him to be a priest.

HoraceCope · 15/04/2019 23:27

I have been rewatching Sherlock for Moriaty

RosaWaiting · 15/04/2019 23:35

Horace Moriarty doesn't have much screen time, but the impact of Scott's relatively short scenes is extraordinary.

I particularly love the swimming pool scene when he looks at Watson and says something like "aw, I should get me one of those".

Singasonga · 16/04/2019 10:07

Okay, who was it who mentioned Archive of Our Own earlier in this thread? There’s definitely been a little burst of Fleabag activity over there. BlushGrin

PenguindreamsofDraco · 16/04/2019 12:03

Sorry not sorry Grin

ShowOfHands · 16/04/2019 14:39

Theres a fic on there with the morning after the wedding and it's my current head canon!

PenguindreamsofDraco · 16/04/2019 15:51

The badger in the kitchen one? Yep, that is what actually happened after she waved us goodbye and you can't persuade me otherwise Grin

RosaWaiting · 16/04/2019 15:56

I'm finding that site a bit strange

can someone please link the badger story? not a euphemism Grin

PenguindreamsofDraco · 16/04/2019 16:19

Badgers

RosaWaiting · 16/04/2019 16:47

thanks Penguin

AIBU that I wanted there to be an actual badger? Grin

ShowOfHands · 16/04/2019 19:21

Yep, the badger one Grin

A03 is great if you know what you're looking for.
