In answer to pp who said they couldn’t understand that fb had slept with boos bf, I totally can see it. Remember the scene in series 1 where she walks down the street towards a guy and she thinks he’s going to fancy her, and he just walks on by without a look? She thinks every man wants her and she gets all her validation from men wanting her. Which is why she will sleep with anyone, even people she doesn’t fancy, like guy from the bus. As much as she really loved boo, she loved the validation that sex gave her even more. She is growing out of that in series 2 which is why we saw her able to love someone properly.

RosemaryTelephoneOperator · 10/04/2019 21:26

So true trousers the guy in the street coughed "walk of shame" under his breath and when she's playing with the cucumber in the cafe and says she's going to fuck the next guy who walks in the door and it's her dad she says something like "interesting" to us.

Tinkoschminko · 10/04/2019 21:42

Yeah good point. She’s so driven by sex in the first series - she’s almost using it to punish herself. The kick she gets out of the male violence class in the hotel too.

XXcstatic · 10/04/2019 21:55

he plays the bassoon, it's a cry for help'

Loved the bassoon line. I also loved, that when we finally heard him play the sodding thing, he was rather good: not unfeasibly child-prodigy good, just good. In a Richard Curtis film, he would have been amazing or shit, which is why PWB is 10 times the writer that Curtis will ever be, though probably not as rich Grin

birdsandroses · 10/04/2019 22:02

@Tootrousers, yes, I think you are right. When I mulled it over a bit more I thought we were shown how she uses sex as validation and so it would equally work that she would sleep with Boo’s boyfriend even before the grief of losing her mum as sex was her Achilles heel.

Myohmydeliah · 10/04/2019 22:16

Not relating to the final episode but I keep wandering what he was going to say when they were in the street after the Quaker meeting. He started to say ‘I have a confession’, then FB, at the same time, said that she had to get back to the cafe and he asks if he could see it

RosemaryTelephoneOperator · 10/04/2019 22:18

He had to get back to work to do a confessional

Gbtch · 10/04/2019 22:24

Watched it tonight. Brilliant! I too am in love with the priest.
Can’t believe he will grow old abusing choirboys!

reindeermania · 10/04/2019 22:42

I thought that the statue as fb mother, and step mums reaction to her stealing it , was to point out the parallel of step mum sleeping with best friends husband/ fleabag sleeping with boos boyfriend. It, to me, was step mum, god mother, acknowledging the love she had for her beautiful best friend, in spite of going on to marry her widower. In the way the fleabag regretted sleeping with boos boyfriend despite the love she had for boo?

QueenDoria · 10/04/2019 23:59

Late to the party but loved it all

WithTwoGiantBoys · 11/04/2019 00:31

Apparently the deaf guy signs "What am I doing here?"

It was perfect wasn't it?

QueenDoria · 11/04/2019 07:05

I think what is special for me is that I’ve been waiting for a romcom film where the female protagonist DIDNT end up with someone but it was still a really positive ending. It wasn’t s film but THIS Phoebe, This.

Genius writer and performer.

RuffleCrow · 11/04/2019 07:46

One of the threads that wasn't really tied up was a possible future friendship/relationship with Belinda, who gave FB her card and said to call if she ever needed anything. I'd like to think FB does call her for business advice at some stage when she's feeling stronger - i think there's the potential for real connection and nuturing there. It may also be symbolised by the sculpture - although that was obviously more about her mother.

Cozzo · 11/04/2019 08:14

That’s genius @reindeermania

ESM is so reverential about the statue’s meaning when we first meet her but she doesn’t like FB enough to share the personal connection.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 11/04/2019 09:20

@Reindeermania, I think you're right about the statue, with a handful of her own emotions regarding the mother thrown in- I think she was jealous, and is still frightened of being over shadowed, despite being a friend. One of those "I love you so much, I want to be you" types.

God Mother still has the power to hurt Fleabag - telling her about her mum at that point still seems a bit deliberate, and she is naturally unpleasant- but she seems willing to rein it in now. I like to think she'd understand why Fleabag took it back, although she probably had a tantrum! If you see Flea through God Mothers eyes, she must be hard to deal with and remind God Mother very obviously of someone she loved but also competed with.

Weird that Fleabag had trouble with meaningful connections or feeling likeable in the show universe, when we've totally all fallen in love with her/PWB!

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 11/04/2019 09:26

@RuffleCrow, I thought Belinda giving the business card was the end goal of that episode. Fleabag has made a connection with someone that wasn't just about sex. It just shows Fleabag reconnecting meaningfully with people beyond her family and I think it is meant to show us that Fleabag will survive in the big wide world - she has the best woman in business on her side!

Connieston · 11/04/2019 09:43

Is it just me or does the statue seem small in the first episodes and enormous at the end of series 2?

vincettenoir · 11/04/2019 09:44

Did the Dad want to get out of the wedding?

JessMariano · 11/04/2019 09:49

I watched a clip of PWB winning a BAFTA for S1 of Fleabag and someone had commented underneath saying they should have presented her with the sculpture! Grin

SirVixofVixHall · 11/04/2019 09:52

JessMario - that would have been so funny.
I was hoping for a conversion to Anglicanism..God and Love not mutually exclusive, but then I always want the happy ending. In my mind that is what will happen down the line.

RosaWaiting · 11/04/2019 10:08

QueenDoria love the username

yes, as well as waiting for a story with hero staying single, I'm still waiting for one where she just is single by choice and childfree by choice. Hopefully PWB has written it already.

off to read the BBC thread now....

MsPotatoLP · 11/04/2019 10:51

I avoided the one show last night as I didn't want to see AS, I think the HP spell could be easily broken for me.
