FB started breaking up with “us” when she pushed the camera away in s2 ep 5. Now she’s left us and we have to deal with that...so clever

PyjamasBySeven · 09/04/2019 11:03

Anyone needing a PWB fix, this is entertaining:

Love the part where she sums up Killing Eve as 'Murder. Murder. Hair.'

RosemaryTelephoneOperator · 09/04/2019 11:06

PWB talks about friendship in the latest Guilt and Shame podcast if you feel bereft. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/guilt-and-shame/id1086767409?i=1000434234878

dontloseyourhead · 09/04/2019 11:35

I loved it - I was expecting more reasoning from him about why he couldn’t serve God in another denomination but understood.

noblegiraffe · 09/04/2019 11:50

Those saying ‘well why doesn’t he just switch to CofE where they’re allowed sex?’ are assuming that Christian denominations are interchangeable.
They’re not, Catholicism is theologically different to CofE, it’s not just about priests having sex. The Pope, the intercession of Saints, the Virgin Mary, original sin and Baptism, confession and of course faith versus works. If you believe in one, you can’t just switch to the other to get laid.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 09/04/2019 11:52

Ha! I was just composing that post in my head, Noble. People do change denomination but it's a massive profound decision. Not to mention I'm not sure the Anglican Church recognises 'previous relevant experience'...

ThanksItHasPockets · 09/04/2019 11:55

Yes, noble. See also the posters referring to the priesthood as a ‘job’. Catholics believe that theirs is the one true church.

Tootrousers · 09/04/2019 11:56

I get that Noble, but he attended a Quaker mtg therefore giving the impression that he was a bit denomination fluid

Tootrousers · 09/04/2019 11:57

And he expressed a lot of doubt about the church through the series so I don’t think it’s a leap of faith to suggest he might leave or go to another denomination. but absolutely understand that Catholicism is different from
Other denominations etc

Tootrousers · 09/04/2019 12:01

And of course that he struggled with celibacy! There were lots of suggestions that he was not right for Catholicism or the other way round
But he eventually made his mind up and found peace with his decision in my view

groundcontroltomontydon · 09/04/2019 12:22

Hmm Catholicism is a great place for weak men - they can have their cake, eat it, rattle off a few rosaries and they're golden. HP is another weak man just in it for the outfits. FB has had to face her demons; HP has religion and booze and Pam to keep the foxes at bay. It was a great second series - last episode felt a bit Richard Curtis-y though. Loved Martin's speech.

ComputerSaysMo · 09/04/2019 12:35

Yes, I had the same thought about Catholicism and the propensity for forgiveness. The GM telegraphs it right at the start when she’s asking the priest if she can be forgiven for having a real fur bag. The answer is of course, if she repents. That does give HP an out from his declaration of the night before. He said his life would be fucked, but it wasn’t materially. He just needs to get used again to the loneliness of being un-worldly.

RuffleCrow · 09/04/2019 12:37

I loved Claire's gutteral "Please, LEAVE ME!!" even more. She really meant it.

XXcstatic · 09/04/2019 12:46

I love Claire - she is my favourite character - overly self-critical, pinging with suppressed tension and often insensitive but, when it really matters, she gets it right -as with the 'running through the airport' comment to FB. I hope she is living happily ever after in Helsinki and never lays eyes on another bassoon Grin

CountFosco · 09/04/2019 13:01

I liked Claire saying about running up to Klare in Boots, a little nod to the joke in the first episode.

Do you think Claire (who is suppose to be like her Dad) was initially attracted to Martin's wildness, opposites attract and repeating her parent's relationship. Presumably their Mum loved FB and didn't always like Claire in symmetry of FB and her Dad's relationship.

FB I think was loved by her Mum (and Boo) and was damaged by her Dad not liking her. There was a thread on here a few years ago and quite a few of us were saying our parents would say 'I love you but I don't always like you'. Presumably there was some parenting manual that recommended that at some point in the past. But it make 'love' a duty and meaningless. What good is 'love' if you don't like the person you love (see also: Claire and Martin)? And like Claire, FB repeated her parent's relationship in her relationship with the weak Harry.

I think the open ending is good. Feels more realistic, gives us opportunities to speculate on what happens (FB finds someone who loves her and is available etc. HP gets bald and fat and drinks himself to death). But also does mean things are open for PWB to revisit the characters later if she wants to.

Soeaking of which waves to those of us of a certain age who loved This Life and the 'Before' trilogy. Two of my favourite viewing experiences ever. Lets hope FB S3 is as good as 'Before Midnight' and not like the This Life revisit.

So, I've now got Killing Eve to watch. And what about Crashing? Anyone watched that? Is it worth a watch?

The80sweregreat · 09/04/2019 13:05

Lots of begging going on ( I am rewatching it) Claire with Martin. Godmother with asking them to find dad. Nicely too!
I bet HP has to beg forgiveness too later on.

merrymouse · 09/04/2019 13:11

Yes exactly tootrousers - He never seems that tied to Catholicism. For one thing why is he agreeing to officiate at what appears to be a pretty secular wedding?

Maybe this is a problem with the plot, but the point of him being Catholic seems to celibacy. Apart from that he doesn’t seem too bothered.

merrymouse · 09/04/2019 13:14

And I mean for goodness sake, if you find celibacy difficult, don’t invite attractive women round for drinking sessions - surely they cover this somewhere in the training!

gokartdillydilly · 09/04/2019 13:15

Got to the end. Blubbing. Snot and everything. Even hubby was wiping his eyes. Couldn't bear the thought of it being all over, so topped up the vino, and it was back to Series 1 Ep 1 for us on another binge-watch. Best thing I have seen twice ever.

merrymouse · 09/04/2019 13:17

last episode felt a bit Richard Curtis-y though.

Much as I would love a 3rd series, I really don’t want a comic relief 20 years later.

Connieston · 09/04/2019 13:22

Ha! It can't be Richard Curtisy unless there's a jaunty then sad saxophone as the soundtrack. I think Isobel WB's score was in a league of its own. Incredible.

Wheresmyvagina · 09/04/2019 13:25

@countfosco there won't be a fleabag series 3

The80sweregreat · 09/04/2019 13:27

The final song was just brilliant , cool and the words were just right.
I will need to find this for a playlist.

BertrandRussell · 09/04/2019 13:30

I am so delighted that the entirely estimable Hadley Freeman agrees with me about PriestyBoy “I love Fleabag (obviously) but I thought the (admittedly hot) priest was emotionally manipulative, toxically selfish and dangerously broken, and I also think we’re supposed to think that so I don’t understand why everyone is lusting after him”

NotMyPuppy · 09/04/2019 13:34

The bus being cancelled - symbolising she’s not going to take the same journey back to her old life but is on a new path now?

That ending is possibly the most profound bit of tv I have ever seen. Beautiful.
