Bus stops are so dismal though! At least train stations are under cover and a bit warmer or have waiting rooms.

I spent my twenties waiting around windy horrible bus stops for non existent buses and still hate getting them now I can look up times on my phone or they have those digital displays at some of the stops.
Which still manage to get it wrong!
I wondered why she walked off in the opposite direction ; probably to get a cab.

HoraceCope · 09/04/2019 08:49

she walked in the opposite direction otherwise we would assume she was going after him, i think

merrymouse · 09/04/2019 08:51

I think FB and HP eventually meet again in 20 years.

She has had a long term relationship that was happy but that has ended (death? divorce?).

He asked to be moved to a different church and eventually left the priesthood for reasons totally unconnected to FB.

He is working on a remote island looking after sheep and the old monastery.

She opens a cafe.

There are lots of colourful locals.

We see them every Sunday for an hour at 8pm.

PWB reinvents Sunday night comfort TV.

Tootrousers · 09/04/2019 08:52

I don’t disagree merrymouse, I just disagree with people saying he will
Be lonely and leave the preisthood after this, I think the absolute opposite, for him, this has reconfirmed his faith and his belief in his calling

RuffleCrow · 09/04/2019 08:52

So true about London and bus stops and youth.

Sigh

I think it's because fewer people bother to drive anywhere in London so potentially those social interactions are increased - but then so is the cold and rain and desolation at other times.

I'm all nostalgic for London now!

merrymouse · 09/04/2019 08:55

for him, this has reconfirmed his faith and his belief in his calling

I think my stumbling block here is that I really don't understand why a calling has to exclude sex (or why priests are always men) - but I realise that is in an issue that is much bigger than FB!

Wheresmyvagina · 09/04/2019 08:57

I don't think he will leave the priesthood but he will be lonely

Tootrousers · 09/04/2019 09:01

Oh me too. The answer for me is that he joins another denomination that allows marriage. I dislike that about Catholicism. However for him, I really believe he is “happy” in his choice, or at least strong in it. I think his experience with fb has enabled him to find himself and his god in the same way as she has found herself in being loved. Selfish? Probably, but I think they both loved each other and used each other in equal measure and have both come out of it having learnt something and grown as people

maeb · 09/04/2019 09:05

The80sweregreat I'm with you on LaLaLand. I thought it was okay enough but that 'what could have been' montage at the end slayed me. It was beautiful, poetic. The rest of it, Gosling's nasal-y voice for one, not so much.

We were allowed to share two of FB's major life events. She'll have more, only without us.

I was heartbroken for them both at the end, but who know what happens afterwards when we're not there?

I really like short stories for the same reason, they can end abruptly, untidily, and make me create different scenarios in my mind-brain. Grin

RosaWaiting · 09/04/2019 09:09

surely everyone waved back at Fleabag?

The80sweregreat · 09/04/2019 09:12

Merrymouse:
ballykissangel was a bit like that! Or Heartbeat! ( shows age)

I can imagine Step mum having a surrogate baby and living on a sheep farm ; not doing the graft but just hiring people while she paints the baby lambs, badly.
Dad just running about in a Barbour jacket and wellies not having a clue. Hating having a new baby about the place.
Country living : not all they expect it to be. With a broken aga.
Then FB rocks up with her vintage tea shop and her pets and is an instant hit whilst step mums 'chic ' art shop is floundering.

merrymouse · 09/04/2019 09:17

ballykissangel was a bit like that! Or Heartbeat! ( shows age)

Well yes - this show will recognise it's origins, but still break the mould!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 09/04/2019 09:22

A tiny moment that pushed home how useless Dad was...
"Nice skirts"

They were both wearing dresses.

I also KNEW that Stepmother had chosen Dad's wedding outfit and insisted he wear it. He was definitely NOT a linen Nehru jacket sort of bloke. It made him seem even more out of his depth at his own wedding

Tinkoschminko · 09/04/2019 09:22

I think all in all the power dynamics were pretty fair. The scene where they do finally have sex attributes a fair amount of power to FB (ostensibly, atleast, unless we’re really cynical about HP).

As a PP said, they both benefitted and they both suffered in equal measure and I don’t think any of it was calculated by either of them.

PrincessButtockUp · 09/04/2019 09:35

So much still swirling around in my head. The statue was "based on your mum" so I suspect the ESM was rebuffed by the mum and because FB is so like her mum it tarnished their relationship (faced her backwards in the portrait).

HP mentions early on that there have been other temptations. "What if you meet someone you love? I talk to them, and give them bibles, and hope that they go away." He was always going to choose God, but I cling to hope (!) that he was more tempted by FB than any other.

This season was about FB rediscovering that she is lovable, and can move forward in confidence that love is out there. For Claire and for her.

Sobbed watching it, though!!

HoraceCope · 09/04/2019 09:36

her dad was great wasnt he though, spot on

The80sweregreat · 09/04/2019 09:39

I plowed through la la land but the ending was so different and I loved that bit.
The rest was a bit meh.
Will miss Fleabag. Will have to watch it all again!

Janus · 09/04/2019 09:40

I’ve found it on amazon prime!
Oh god, it was amazing, so beautifully written! I actually shouted at the tv to Claire to get down on her knees and beg!!
So was Dad in the loft thinking of not turning up?
Loved the fox at the end too.
FB will be fine but god I’ll miss her!!

spiderlight · 09/04/2019 09:42

Oh God. I literally had a pain in the middle of my chest at the end of that when she said 'It's God, isn't it?' Perfectly done though - the little shake of the head at the end telling us not to follow her :(

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 09/04/2019 09:53

Rewatched on the train this morning and had a little cry. My takeaways:

  • this is not the Priest’s first rodeo...
  • the dad’s faculties are failing - Alzheimer’s? - hence the off-key comments, and step-mother’s comment about her looking after him instead of FB.

The song at the end was also used in Big Little Lies which is the last series that left me feeling as bereft as FB when it finished (and also female-heavy Smile)

noblegiraffe · 09/04/2019 10:09

Why the priest could see FB talking to us? Perhaps because he also has someone off-screen that he talks to? When the picture first falls off the wall and he raises his eyes to heaven and says ‘I love it when he does stuff like that’.

He seems to have a genuine and personal relationship with God.

merrymouse · 09/04/2019 10:11

For everyone feeling a bit bereaved and bereft, I think it's best to focus on the fact that although the characters are fictional, all the talent that created the series is very real.

RuffleCrow · 09/04/2019 10:13

Yes, Princess - perhaps ESM was after the mum eventually (beautiful, successful artist/teacher etc) but has settled for living in her house, doing her job, shagging her husband, looking at her naked torso and 'helping' her daughters?

cookiedoughorbust · 09/04/2019 10:13

PWB was brought catholic I think, she certainly went to catholic school.
I remember a nun at my school telling us that she had a job, a lovely little cottage and a boyfriend, but she had her calling and she felt something was missing. So she became a nun and left it all behind and now she dedicated her life to God but sometimes she still felt something was missing but she didn’t mind as she knew she made the right choice.
I don’t think Hot Priest is a serial philanderer, his relationship with the priesthood isn’t perfect but it’s right for him. Same as ESM and Dad. It’s not easy, it’s not perfect, but it is real. Whereas Claire and Martin are so wrong even Jake thinks Claire should leave. And what’s right for FB...we don’t know yet.. She hasn’t found it yet.

RuffleCrow · 09/04/2019 10:14

And FB just reminds her of who she really wanted and why it's all a total sham.
