Sorry couldn't see a thread for this..

Did anyone watch it last night?

Just catching up with it now on iPlayer. I'm pleased to see Lynn is in it.

OP posts:
Kaboodler · 20/03/2019 17:30

Always great to be tansplained to.

PerfumeandOranges · 20/03/2019 17:35

Well, I do hope that when someone next complains of racism towards a BAME, the suggestion is to write to Points of View.

Sometimes,@Kaboodler, even explaining doesn't always help but not to worry. As I said, Coogan cleverly disguised racism to fool people and I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that enough of them were!

Kaboodler · 20/03/2019 17:38

Thanks for the tansplaining and the patronising tone. You really are spoiling us.

PerfumeandOranges · 20/03/2019 17:44

Yes, kabodler, I know you've picked up a new term and it's hilarious but you are on the wrong horse using it towards me.

Kaboodler · 20/03/2019 17:47

That term has been around for a long time now. But sadly I often have cause to use it. Because English people love explaining Ireland to me.

PerfumeandOranges · 20/03/2019 17:52

They may do but that will only be because you let them and laugh along with them.

They're not so keen on doing it to me-after all as the song says, yet another one, 'Would you let a Saxon cock crow out upon an Irish rock-fly up and teach him manners.' (Follow Me Up to Wexford)'

Coogan is having a good laugh at all the Irish people laughing along with him. I call it racist but you don't and that's why Ireland is partitioned.

PerfumeandOranges · 20/03/2019 17:53

'It's Follow me up to Carlow' in fact!

Kaboodler · 20/03/2019 17:53

I call it racist but you don't and that's why Ireland is partitioned.

Oh now I'm all ears. Please proceed.

PerfumeandOranges · 20/03/2019 18:00

How can you be Irish and not know?

Are we now at a stage where, as well as laughing at our own songs and saying some caricature presented by a comedian is a 'spot on' representation of our own race, that we also don't know our own history.

Maybe these things go hand in hand.

Anyway, I'll leave you to crow because as our country man said, when you fight with pigs you both get dirty and the pig enjoys it. Not calling you a pig, just using Shaw's literary allusion.

Kaboodler · 20/03/2019 18:05

You'll leave me to it because you're seemingly incapable of explaining how Irish people who found Coogan's show funny are the reason for partition. How can you not be wincing at making such a simpleton statement?

Kaboodler · 20/03/2019 18:11

You're about as Irish as a bowl of Frosted Lucky Charms. Nice try though.

AbriaFern · 20/03/2019 18:12

“ I call it racist but you don't and that's why Ireland is partitioned.”

You’ve just done and fuckin solved it now, and on an Internet forum too! Off you run to the bbc and let them know your very important thoughts on this and leave the rest of us to talk about a tele show.

The80sweregreat · 20/03/2019 18:18

I wasn't watching properly ( distracted) and I looked up and thought it was a person that looked like Steve Coogan playing Alan . I was a bit puzzled at first. Duh.

I have seen the film ( which was funny) but I've never seen any ' knowing you ,knowing me' but I feel I need to buy the dvds now.
This stated off not very good and just got better each episode.
It's the way they all speak that cracks me up.

The80sweregreat · 20/03/2019 18:19

That made little sense! I meant I thought the Irish man was an Alan P look alike.
I'm confusing myself now.

Kaboodler · 20/03/2019 18:26

The irony of someone so determined to argue that Coogan was being racist that they assume an Irish identity and proceed to make pretty offensive statements about Irish politics in order to make their point.

InionEile · 20/03/2019 19:26

You’re no expert on rebel songs Perfumes. ‘Come Out Ye Black and Tans’ and ‘Men Behind the Wire’ are both from the Wolfe Tones’ album ‘Let the People Sing’. I grew up listening to that album at me fayther’s knee, as it happens, back in the early 80s when support for the IRA was at a peak because of internment and the hunger strikes. The Chieftains etc do a much milder brand of trad music without the political vibe. As you would know if you were in fact TRULY Irish and not a plastic Paddy Grin. It’s true they’re not intended as joke songs but they are shockingly funny to hear being sung on the BBC!

PerfumeandOranges · 20/03/2019 19:33

Absolutely ridiculous, Kaboodler!

Are you Mystic Meg that you can instantly know the identity, race and heritage of all who post? Or maybe, by throwing accusations my way, you're taking a pack from your own sack.

I shouldn't take the bait but...it is a fact that Ireland is partitioned and we collude in that by not taking our identity seriously-no-one ever mentions as, to come back to where I started with Alan Partridge and his nasty caricature which you declare 'spot on.'

I would not expect an African American to say the Black and White Minstrels were 'spot on': they are nasty caricatures, just as this was in Coogan's show.

If it resembles the Irish people you know, then maybe you are mixing with too many Plastic Paddys! I hesitate to say you are one as unlike you, I have not magical powers to know who you are. Maybe you're Steve Coogan!

Do you think the men and women who were hanged for wearing green, for speaking their own language, would find this funny? Do you think those whose homes were invaded by Black and Tans would find this funny? Do you think those incarcerated without a trial, in front of one judge, would find this funny?

Do you think any of them would say this Coogan character was a 'spot on' representation of them?

Now goodnight, Kaboodler and next time someone starts laughing at the Irish in a nasty way, I would ask you to not join in and say that it is 'spot on' thereby rendering yourself foolish but rather to show a little bit of wit and ask them why the Irish are fast becoming the only race that people can take the piss out of a television show. #

If you don't want to say that, you may live where it isn't politic to say that, at least don't collude and say it is 'spot on'.

To really go back to the beginning, this show by Steve Coogan is pure shite-un funny bilge-and that is, really-no matter what provocation, is my last word!

PerfumeandOranges · 20/03/2019 19:35

Inion Ellie-sod it, I have to say this....Irish people can spell father and know to use 'my' not 'me' when writing. Ta-ta!

PigeonofDoom · 20/03/2019 19:46

Right, well, moving on!

You should definitely buy the dvds the80s, it’s classic comedy. My personal favourites are the series in the travel tavern and his house build (I’m Alan Partridge). These are also on Netflix.
Just to get you started, here is my very favourite clip Grin

Savoury99 · 20/03/2019 19:51

PerfumeandOranges

You said you weren't watching in again after episode 2.

Kaboodler · 20/03/2019 19:57

That particular poster seems to make lots of claims which aren't quite true. It's just so mysterious...

Kaboodler · 20/03/2019 20:01

Inion Ellie-sod it, I have to say this....Irish people can spell father and know to use 'my' not 'me' when writing. Ta-ta!

And yet you can't seem to spell Iníon Eile's name correctly. Perhaps because you're wholly unfamiliar with the Irish language.

Ta-ta.

InionEile · 20/03/2019 20:10

Well spotted, Kaboodler Wink Plastic Paddy for sure!

cushioncovers · 20/03/2019 20:28

Pigeon 😂

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 20/03/2019 21:07

Can't remember what series but the ones with his girlfriend Sonia, she's brilliant! When he takes her to a National Trust Property pretending it's Bono's house as he's told he he's mates with him!

Actually Lynne's friend from church pretends to be Bono with a dodgy Irish accent so perhaps not a great one to draw attention to Confused
