Not sure if there is a thread already, but just incase, has anyone else seen it?

I'm amazed that it got to that point. Those tents!! That's sandwich!

OP posts:
comebacksoonsusan · 28/01/2019 21:56

Also intrigued by Mdavid.

Scandaloso · 28/01/2019 21:59

'one of the men' I meant to say not 'one of them men'!

I agree that McFarland will be back with a new venture/scam at some point. Men like that don't just think 'oh well' and then settle down to a quiet life.

NicoleNoPants · 28/01/2019 22:03

Yeah the people slashing tents when their was not enough Angry

Freshprincess · 28/01/2019 22:13

It was loads more interesting than I thought it would be. I spent ages Googling the story in case they'd missed any details out. So glad the catering lady got her money back.

Scandaloso · 28/01/2019 22:16

I think they said that Kendall Jenner was paid $250,000 to make one single promotional Instagram post for the festival. Blows my mind that someone can make such an eye watering sum for what, 2 minutes work? Shock

sleeplessinsomewhereelse · 28/01/2019 22:17

Oh I'm watching it now. Shocking stuff!

Scandaloso · 28/01/2019 22:18

Also, did anyone think for such a high-end festival that the music lineup was utter rubbish? Blink 182? Has anyone wanted to see them since 2002?

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 28/01/2019 22:28

I turned it on, not expecting any great shakes but I was hooked from the start. The film just kept on delivering more and more, in direct contrast with the festival which delivered the opposite.
There are a lot of shitty people out there, from scam artists, to vacuous money grabbing influencer types to the utter scrotes pisding on others' mattresses. And the way they admitted it with no self awareness. Mind boggling.
I'm glad the lovely Bahamian caterer has had her money back but exploiting the poorest people for their labour and then paying them nothing? That reminds me of something similar. I bet a lot of people will never see a cent of the money they are owed, and it is these people that should be proritised over corporate creditors.
Will have to look up the other documentary too, thanks for the tip.

Scandaloso · 28/01/2019 22:34

Yes, there was a bit of a modern colonialism theme wasn't there? The people who were fucked over the most were the native Bahamians who could least afford it.

ElliePhillips · 28/01/2019 22:41

Yes I wondered about the name MDavid A LOT while watching that doc.

Could it be a version of David from a non-anglophone culture? Like Davidovic. Or is it just and attempt by an uber hipster to make his mundane name more exciting? Grin

Scandaloso · 28/01/2019 22:44

I wonder if it's pronounced muh-David or em-David. I must know!

And why was the PR company (I think they were a PR company) called Fuck Jerry? Grin

NicoleNoPants · 28/01/2019 22:50

I’ve googled MDavid but the only thing that came up was Reddit- who were also wondering how to pronounce it!

Freshprincess · 28/01/2019 22:52

I thinking mmmmmDavid, like the mmbop song.

Was also Shock at FuckJerry. Do they actually want customers? I'm trying to Imagine our receptionist putting the call through 'its, John from Fuck Jerry for you' Grin.

NicoleNoPants · 28/01/2019 22:53

According to his twitter it’s pronounced Em-David and is on his birth certificate. I did wonder if it was an initial

HouseOfMouse · 28/01/2019 22:54

There is another doc from Hulu called “Fyre Fraud” which is also worth a watch - it’s available on Youtube. They have slightly different contributors (including McFarland himself who comes across as a right slippery bastard, unsurprisingly). Extraordinary story all round. Wasn’t sure what to make of the Evian story though. I mean, really?

Scandaloso · 28/01/2019 22:55

So Mdavid is em-david. Just drop the extraneous m, Mdavid babe. Be a boring old David.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 28/01/2019 23:01

I thought it was interesting but the guy who produced it is part of Jerry Media so what to believe and what were his motives? Makes me question the blow job story - was that just another pr stunt, to get him to say that? It seemed to drop out of nowhere.

Cheekyandfreaky · 28/01/2019 23:02

Just watched it and I think basically all of the guys that worked for him and ja rule were equally to blame. All that b-s about him being some charismatic guy that just won everyone over- Billy didn’t seem charismatic to me. They all had dollar signs in their eyes and they all just chucked him under a bus. I think he was a horrible person too- that line about attracting ‘average losers’ yuck.

HouseOfMouse · 28/01/2019 23:03

Also, the Fuck Jerry lot were producers of the Netflix doc. I’m not sure what difference that would have made to the “angle” and in particular how their role was portrayed, but I’m guessing it had some bearing.

Scandaloso · 28/01/2019 23:17

It seemed to me like all the guys involved were rich kids who expect a certain lifestyle. The tall, young guy who booked the talent said he'd paid for $100,000 worth of something on his credit card for Billy. And the yoga guy seemed like he came from a wealthy Manhattan background.

Agree that Billy didn't seem particularly charismatic!

HouseOfMouse · 28/01/2019 23:32

It is baffling that so many people apparently believed that McFarland knew what he was doing, when he came across as so clueless and charmless.

The Fuck Jerry crowd etc. were all a bit Nathan Barley.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 29/01/2019 00:08

Agree that McFarland didn't come across as particularly charismatic - he looked bloated and, to be frank, coked (red eyed - although maybe that equals charisma in some circles). People go along with anything if they think it's going to make them money.

NicoleNoPants · 29/01/2019 09:04

I can’t believe the amount of money being spoken about like it was peanuts! That 100 000 on the credit card wasn’t presented as that bigger deal!

sleeplessinsomewhereelse · 29/01/2019 12:31

Wow. Amazing

More money than sense!

qazxc · 29/01/2019 18:27

They still refer to him as a great entrepreneur. No he fucking isn't! He's a scam artist! Of course all his ideas look and sound amazing, that's how he gets his money.
Why is Ja Rule not also getting sued, he looked as much of a driving force as Mc Farland.
Having worked for a psychopath, I can see how the staff were conned/ manipulated though. It's the sort of thing that when you are out of it you recognise as utter madness but in the moment, under the pressure and influence, especially away from home and normalising influences; you do get sucked in. It's like a cult, you don't realise how bad it is and you don't feel you can leave.
