Has anyone seen this, because seriously what the actual fuck???

OP posts:

I actually had sympathy for the parents to an extent because they were groomed as was their daughter. Berchtold was obviously a master manipulator plus given their religious affiliations, they were going to be more easily led. Plus, he'd also sexually assaulted other young girls. It's likely he groomed their parents as well.

A couple of things I didn't like in regard to the man from the FBI. I didn't like his language when he spoke about Jan being "seduced" and also Berchtold and Jan being in an "unnatural relationship". Firstly, Jan was raped. There was no "seduction". Secondly, there was not a "relationship", this was a child that was groomed.

Cocolepew · 27/01/2019 16:43

I didn't like theFBI mans language either . I've read that her dad died last year.

Andromeida59 · 27/01/2019 20:03

I do really feel for the family. Majority of comments are negative towards the parents when they were also victims. There seems to be no mention of the psychologist, the Police or the church that so willingly forgave him.
It's not only children that are groomed.

starryeyedsnowgirl · 27/01/2019 20:09

Gosh I watched this a couple of days ago- terrible. I think the parents were horribly naive but I do think they were groomed too. A reminder that sex offenders are often charming and charismatic. That is how they work and that their targets don’t realise what they are doing is wrong.

I also wanted to know more about the family now.

Cocolepew · 27/01/2019 20:38

But surely after your child was kidnapped , drugged and raped and the FBI were involved you might start to realise you'd been played?

Mrskeats · 28/01/2019 00:46

I can’t wrap my mind around how the parents allowed to go on. Insane.

IamFrauBlucher · 28/01/2019 09:30

The only explanation I can even quantify a minuscule amount is the fact that in the church of LDS adultery and homosexuality (and I guess particularly during the early 70's) were seen as on a par with murder in terms of evil doing.

That's why I agree it was grooming and a plan to blackmail the parents by his actions. I think they were deliberate on his part.

I can only imagine being shunned from the community for those sins (two in one family) would've definitely meant loss of their business (the flower shop), income, home, school friends community etc etc. I think they remained focussed on this and not the priority of their daughters safety and well being with misguided judgement.

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 28/01/2019 09:37

I am going to have to give it another watch as I was so “WTF” the first time,

Personally I think your explanation is right IamFrauBlucher

The whole family were targeted and it was all part of his grooming.

HerbertDibDab · 28/01/2019 11:34

I've just watched this and I don't think my 'wtf' expression changed the entire time.

I agree with the PP who said that the whole family were groomed. Berchtold manipulated every member of that family to get access to Jan and then continue his abuse of her. It absolutely beggars belief that her parents would allow him to do half the stuff he did to Jan (like sleeping in her bed as part of his "therapy") but I can see how manipulated they were by him and ashamed of their behaviour.

I don't know. It's all just very odd and extremely sad. That man destroyed their family with his foul perversions and obsession, and her parents enabled him even after they knew he had bad intentions and then they covered it up to protect themselves. Poor Jan was let down horribly.

Mrskeats · 28/01/2019 13:18

Jan is now a successful actress. Impressive really. She's a survivor.

ShatnersBassoon · 29/01/2019 13:03

I've just watched this. WTF was going on there?! A lot of it is so unbelievable it's got to be impossible.

Newsername · 29/01/2019 13:14

Omg, I watched this the other day with jaw dropped. It was just so messed up I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

When the Dad admitted he “relieved” B in the car 😱. Major wtf am I watching moment.

The aliens? The mum having an affair with B? The part where they’re playing live phone calls and the mum asks “B” if he still wants to marry her and she him...she was fricking 13!!! Too much messed up shit. Even the FBI agent was pissed off with the parents when he said “This time, they reported her missing 4 weeks later”.

It was a completely unbelievably fucked up story. How she didn’t blame her parents for not protecting her I don’t know.

ShatnersBassoon · 29/01/2019 13:22

That was how I felt too. Imagine not reporting your child missing because you quite liked the kidnapper and his family Confused. Then allowing him to share a bed with the pre-teen he abducted to help him in his 'rehabilitation' Shock. Surely that sort of access to children would need encouragement, not just resignation in spite of concerns as they are claiming.

Newsername · 29/01/2019 13:43

It was like the parents were constantly worried about what people would think so decided to wait days and then weeks to report her missing to minimise what had happened. Then signed those affidavits just to save their own sordid behaviour. Unbelievable!! One of the oddest things I’ve ever watched, and can completely understand how a predator targets the whole family, but you just wouldn’t let it happen twice and let him back into your life a second time!

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 29/01/2019 15:15

I can quite see why Jan believed in the aliens. Bless her, she was a little girl and a lamb to the slaughter.

SavageBeauty73 · 29/01/2019 20:05

I've just watched this! Wtf?! Totally mental story.

The parents 😡

Aveeno2017 · 30/01/2019 10:37

I'm raging at the telly at this very moment!! The parents are another the level....the mother smiling as she described her affair.

Whatififall · 31/01/2019 19:38

I watched this last night, mouth open the whole time.
While I think B was a master manipulator Jan’s Parents need to take responsibility for allowing it to happen. Her mother was clearly infatuated with him, she seemed jealous that B had married Jan, and the happiest she looked in the show was when she was talking about B.

I just don’t understand why they didn’t report her missing sooner. The first time especially. When they didn’t come back from th stables my first thought would be “they’ve been in a car accident” and I’d report it.

I found it very unsettling. I think they knew what he was doing to Jan but they were happy for him to do it as they were both having affairs with him.

I’m also interested in B’s wife and family, I found it odd that she convinced the family not to contact the police. I think she knew.

SlimGin · 01/02/2019 13:35

I'm 30 mins in, I just had to check there was a thread about it because what the fuck

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 01/02/2019 13:49

All very weird, he groomed and manipulated the entire family.
What strikes me is that there must have been a great deal of therapy for them to now be able to speak so openly about what happened.

KaliforniaDreamz · 01/02/2019 14:39

I’m also interested in B’s wife and family, I found it odd that she convinced the family not to contact the police. I think she knew.

This.

Everything that's been said - master manipulator etc i totally agree.
But also so curious about the wife. She must've known. And what kind of fucked upness went on in his own family too.

UGH.

IamFrauBlucher · 01/02/2019 15:05

It was his wife that came round with the affidavit wasn't it?

Goodness knows what hold he had on her too. Confused

KaliforniaDreamz · 01/02/2019 16:57

Yeah it was her who got them to sign. Awful.

notahiker · 03/02/2019 20:54

Just finished watching this and have only picked my jaw up from the floor.

Speechless.

KaliforniaDreamz · 03/02/2019 21:43

Right? utterly abysmal how much Jan was let down. How that man got away with so much.
