Has anyone seen this, because seriously what the actual fuck???

I watched it last night and just couldn't believe the parents either. Especially the mother having an affair with him after he had abducted her. I agree that she was infatuated with him. Jan also didn't tell anyone that he'd raped her and I think they just wanted to believe that that was true.

I'm also very curious about B's wife. Not only was she the one who convinced them so sign the affidavit, she also convinced them not to call the police for several days the first time he took her. I reckon she knew.

Watched last night. I have spent so much time saying "it can't be real" today. I keep expecting Netflix t9 say "surprise, it was all a joke".

Having grown up Mormon I can understand some of the naivety at the star of the documentary. But the it goes so so far off track that I just don't understand how anyone can be that stupid! I just can't understand the thought process of any of them! After everything that happened, the mother jumps back into bed with him again, I mean a few week prior they were having phone conversations about killing each other! The whole think is completely whacky!

I do think their faith had an impact on how much trust they put in someone, but their actions are just not understandable.

Small town, conservative community, the loss of face etc.
devastating.

MrsMartinRohde · 06/02/2019 11:22

you couldn't make it up. wtaf.

Newsername · 06/02/2019 14:32

I don’t think I’ve ever watched anything like this, that’s made me go “wtf” every 10 mins. One shitty thing just overtook the last one. The girls grown up still seemed to adore their “perfect” parents. I just can’t believe you’d get groomed by the predator who kidnapped your daughter.

KaliforniaDreamz · 07/02/2019 09:35

the parents werent very bright

seazer · 08/02/2019 13:54

Hi I have watched this.

I think what is key is how the family especially the parents were groomed first.
I think that is really key.

I grew up in the 70s and my Dad was rare in terms of restricting adults to have access to is as kids. He was a teacher but honestly people thought he was too strict but he was just following what now would he called good safe guarding practice.

Sleepovers in the 70s were allowed when people didn’t really know what their children were up to or who they were hanging around.

Remember people who carry out this kind of sick attacks look for people and organisations who are vulnerable.

People can be charismatic and that is why safeguarding is so important.

So be really objective about who comes into contact with your child - teachers, soccer coaches and friends. That is the lesson I take away from this series.

Remember the entire family were victims here - I do wish the film would have explained the religious aspects as well.

Watched this yesterday and....wtf!?!

Now I know we've come along way since the 70s in child protection etc. But someone abducts your 12yr old daughter takes her to Mexico to marry her....you would never want that person back j your life again!!! But no he gets access again and again and not only that has sexual relations with both parents wtf!!

Poor girl, nobody protected that child.

Didn't school notice her missing either the second time?

IamFrauBlucher · 08/02/2019 15:15

I saw a guardian article posted on Facebook about it. The comments were pretty much mirrored to here. A lot of shock at the naivety of the parents.

ScabbyHorse · 08/02/2019 16:02

I liked the bit about the bikers at the end. BACA bikers against child abuse. They did more protecting than the actual parents.

hotwing · 08/02/2019 16:31

Her parents are so fucking think. The whole 'Dad giving him relief' thing was just WTAF ConfusedConfused

JessicaJonesJacket · 08/02/2019 18:08

It was such an unbelievable story. Everytime I thought it must have reached the pinnacle of its oddness, there was another twist: buidling the separate bedroom; the sleepover in the garden; the abduction; the dad; the mum's affair; the 'therapy' in the bedroom; the aliens; etc etc I think he deliberately groomed the entire family and the parents didn't think he'd abused her because the doctor said her hymen was intact.

But tbh I am shocked at the police too. They knew he'd abducted her twice. They knew he'd abused another child. And in total he only served just over a year. He was going to get a longer sentence for running over someone and carrying a gun, than he got for being a serial child abuser.

The abuser's brother was dodgy too. I couldn't believe how laidback he was about it all.

KaliforniaDreamz · 10/02/2019 16:12

completely agree about the brother he was way too complicit. if it is possible to be too complicit!
i guess he was just complicit....

i think there is the added yuck factor of her becoming adolescent and then it being seen as a love affair by some..... ugh

also to the point about the 70s i agree things were so lax.
than god for today's safeguarding.

JenniferJareau · 11/02/2019 22:29

I couldn't believe how many times B spent the night with Jan and either her parents didn't know or looked the other way.

All I kept thinking was how could you allow someone to abuse your own daughter just to satisfy your own needs.

SeaViewBliss · 14/02/2019 20:45

I’m about half way through and I am gobsmacked. It’s just all so creepy and awful.

She must have been terrified. I hope she’s been able to build some semblance of a good life.

SeaViewBliss · 14/02/2019 21:03

I can’t stop saying ‘for fucks sake’ every time the parents speak.

CarpeVitam · 21/02/2019 23:49

Just watched this, and 'they' say truth is stranger than fiction! WTaF were her parents thinking ‽
