Anyone watching new series? Not sure the new vicar can replace James Norton!

Wasn't her husband the victim in one of the first episodes?

user1457017537 · 22/01/2019 08:27

My personal opinion and I don’t think he’s Bond material

MyOtherProfile · 22/01/2019 08:48

Does ginger vicar ride off into the sunset with Amanda? Or did she go back to her husband?

tinstar · 22/01/2019 09:59

MissMarplesKnitting - Totally agree! Tommy Lee Royce was one of the most terrifying characters ever! Took me a while to get used to James Norton as the vicar! JN is actually quite a mild-mannered and softly spoken person so he's clearly very talented to turn out such a convincing character as Tommy.

So refreshing to see people actually act rather than just playing themselves. Bet he'd make a great Bond.

Clawdy · 22/01/2019 10:57

Amanda left during last series and won't be returning as far as I know. James Norton might be doing another series of the Russian Mafia thing he did last year, it was very well received. He is actually a very versatile actor.

There is definitely another series of McMafia coming.
I didn't like it all that much, TBH, although I liked that the Russian characters were played by actual Russians and pretty heavyweight actors at that.

KurriKurri · 22/01/2019 13:00

I couldn't make head or tail of McMafia - I struggled through one episode and gave up.

MissEliza · 23/01/2019 23:52

I loved Happy Valley and I think JN was amazing in his role. I think they need a third series to finish things off though. I actually watched McMafia several times because the fact it was based on true stories terrifies me. FWIW my favourite JN role was War and Peace. He is a very versatile actor.

DarlingNikita · 24/01/2019 11:03

I think there will be another series of Happy Valley, but it's taking a while because Sally Wainwright has been busy with other stuff including being writer in residence at (I think) the Wellcome Collection. And I think Sarah Lancashire has been unwell, although I don't know if that's connected.

diddl · 24/01/2019 14:58

I'd quite like more Last Tango in Halifax!

DarlingNikita · 24/01/2019 17:11

I've never watched that. Looking at the cast, and going by Happy Valley, I wonder if I should try it out.

diddl · 24/01/2019 17:49

The episodes are only half an hour so not too much lost if it isn't your thing!

Like a lot of things I think it does lose its way a bit, but overall pretty watchable I would say.

DarlingNikita · 24/01/2019 18:13

Thanks diddl, I'd assumed it was an hour but it being half an hour IS quite appealing!

diddl · 25/01/2019 09:36

Sorry, I'm wrong-they are an hour. For some reason I was thinkin of Ladies of Letters tha Anne Reid was in with aureen Lipman-that's just half an hour.

DarlingNikita · 25/01/2019 12:34

Oh! Never mind, I'll try one anyway.

Wheeesht · 25/01/2019 21:06

Grantchester without James Norton? Who will be the handsome and charming one now?!

Clionba · 25/01/2019 21:34

William Davenport!
I do like Leonard, he's a great character.
Poor Mrs Geordie, what an awful man.

user1457017537 · 26/01/2019 01:00

I think Leonard should have his own programme I just love him!

tinstar · 26/01/2019 02:59

Oh I love Leonard too! I don't miss Sidney and all his angst at all. I'm happy he's gone if we can have more of Leonard. And poor Mrs C - she's so conflicted!

Clionba · 26/01/2019 04:57

I didn't miss Sidney either. I thought Leonard was excellent, and his sleuthing didn't seem forced. I thought he gave a very nuanced performance, sensitive but not silly. Mrs M is shocked and disgusted, but that's how she would have been. I do fear that Leonard will be ruined, though.

tinstar · 26/01/2019 12:20

I hope what happens is that the new vicar takes a bit of a back seat in the storyline and Leonard is allowed to take over the sleuthing role.

It would be slightly more credible than having 2 sleuthing vicars. Leonard has obviously watched and learnt from Sidney. And he's just so marvellously entertaining to watch. I just adore him!

How they will resolve the issue of Mrs C witnessing the kiss I don't know. She clearly had her suspicions from some of the comments she's made in the past. But this is the first time she's had to really face up to Leonard's sexuality.

Clionba · 26/01/2019 13:06

She must be torn. It'll be a difficult path, either way.
I hope Leonard is the sleuth and the new bloke just the totty! Wink

Corneliawildthing · 28/01/2019 22:49

I love Leonard too and really enjoyed the latest episode. I couldn't make had not rail of McMafia and gave up on it.
Was I the only one one who didn't rate Richard Madden in the Bodyguard. I thought he was really wooden and unconvincing

user1457017537 · 29/01/2019 04:14

Corneliawildthing I didn’t rate him either.

DarlingNikita · 29/01/2019 12:52

The new vicar is dull as dishwater. I hope Leonard will be the sleuth. As pps have said, his performance is just right; comedic and knowing but still believable.

I was surprised at just how disapproving Mrs C (Mrs M? what's she called now??) was about Leonard. I know she was shocked and things were very different then, but to disapprove to the extent of withdrawing support for him getting the vicar job?!

That episode made me think of the Bletchley Circle for some reason. I think it was the more prominent role of women in the cast, and women scientists at that. The series is definitely moving on from the mid-50s housewife era and it's evolving quite interestingly.

I do miss James N though, and his jazz.
