Anyone else putting themselves through this?

I will cry for sure.

I watched with the kids and held it together until Hazel’s scene at the end whereupon I lost it spectacularly. The kids were more amused by me crying than traumatised by Hazel (thank goodness!)

boldlygoingsomewhere · 23/12/2018 06:21

I remember watching the 70s version as a child one Christmas. It was so upsetting - I remember leaving the room and sitting somewhere else bawling my eyes out.

This version has lacked the emotional punch.

UrsulaPandress · 23/12/2018 06:27

Certainly a weird watch. I read the book before I watched the original film. This is definitely truer to the book but lacks emotional involvement.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 23/12/2018 11:26

Does hazel die then when he was shot?! I don't remember that from the original! Maybe I suppressed the memory 😂

ScreamingBadSanta · 23/12/2018 11:29

It lacks the charm and power of the original - I think the impact of the original owed a lot to the music, which this version is lacking.

The rabbits are rather hare-like!

purpleme12 · 23/12/2018 11:50

Why have they made them like hares??

alansleftfoot · 23/12/2018 13:19

Hazel doesn't die until right at the end when he's old.

UrsulaPandress · 23/12/2018 13:45

It was just a brush with death and the black rabbit this time, foretelling his future

Isadora2007 · 23/12/2018 13:56

Neither are a patch on the book. And this version has added bits in for the drama- like them being g chased by the original warren rabbits to the river to cross it. And then the birds etc.
Like that there is less blood and saliva though...

RomanyRoots · 23/12/2018 14:01

I haven't watched as you can't beat the original, I saw it when it first came out in the 70's fantastic film, but not for very young children.

ScreamingBadSanta · 23/12/2018 14:10

I saw the original at the cinema when I was four. I was totally hooked; one of the most memorable occasions of my childhood.

The book is excellent too - I think I was about eight when I first read it.

I'll watch part 2 of this one tonight, but it's not a patch on its predecessors.

buckingfrolicks · 23/12/2018 14:10

It was a winner for my cat too.

I thought it was ok but A Scottish Kehaar? Nope.

I remember watching the original at school back in the days when we all trooped into the hall and watched it on a projector screen.

Ugly sobbing and a numb bum from sitting on the floor - excellent end of term treat Grin

I quite enjoyed part 1 this time round.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 23/12/2018 15:12

I loved the original and didn't think I would enjoy this but it has been ok so far. They seemed to have cut the rabbits run in's with natural preditors, no dog loose in the woods, no badger etc. The dog chasing them over the river is how Hazel gets his idea for the end plan so will be interesting to see how that pans out.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 23/12/2018 15:15

oh but I hated the extra bit of them going into the farm house, so unbelievable. The thing aboit the original was it was like everyday rabbit life. I think the makers of BBC's Peter Rabbit might have snuck in here.

minkies11 · 23/12/2018 15:17

Loved the 70's version as a child (how!) but think it has given me more adult nightmares that anything else either film or tv . Tried to watch it a few years back but literally couldn't get past the first 5 mins! And the creepy soundtrack! DH (who's never heard of it) told me I was a wimp so I left him to it. Was a bit pale and quiet afterwards Grin

BloomsButtons · 23/12/2018 15:18

I can't watch it. My Mum took me to see the original when I was a young child and I was traumatised. Have never watched it again!

Belindabauer · 23/12/2018 15:49

I tried reading the book as a child but it wasn't for me.
After watching yesterday I can't believe this was marketed as a child's film. The scenes where the male was raping the females were vile.

Hofuckingho · 23/12/2018 15:52

I really loved the book and I've read it several times. This thing is a travesty. The animation is poor, the rabbits look like hares, and the whole thing is dark and depressing.

Letshopeitsallok · 23/12/2018 16:00

I thought I was the only one traumatised by the original. I saw it when I was three and apparently screamed the cinema down! Just hearing Bright eyes makes me cry!

DH and DD insisted that we watch the new one as a family. I managed to watch some of this version for those who wanted reassurance. It was long so we stopped about 45 mins in. DD thought it was "boring" (which imo is better that terrifying).

Just before it started:
DD: Mummy why are you hiding under the blanket? Why are your eyes wet?

alansleftfoot · 23/12/2018 16:14

The male raping the females ?? Did I miss that bit ?

LivingDeadGirlUK · 23/12/2018 16:32

Possibly the bit where the prisoners were getting their mark? Was quite a dark scene!

gamerchick · 23/12/2018 16:36

The original is better, this one is an abomination.

JellySlice · 23/12/2018 16:44

It was utterly hideous. Mucked about with the story, dreadful characterless voices, crap CGI. Turned over to watch The Lone Ranger. Equally rubbish, but at least it didn't give me the rage and it had one wonderful action sequence.

noodlenosefraggle · 23/12/2018 17:11

I switched off halfway through so not sure if it got better. I found it dragged on too much. Agree about the bored sounding celeb voices. None of them sounded interested, apart from Olivia Coleman and she's far too recognisable.
