Sunday October 28th at 10pm on BBC2.

Really looking forward to a new episode and seeing how it goes live.

I've met RS more than once and my take is that he's a very pleasant person, slightly less sugary/more guarded than people want him to be as is often the case with comedians, but certainly polite, generous and professional. I liked the joke about Black Mirror in tonight's episode as that is something he is often a bit prickly about on Twitter.

I enjoyed it; didn't think we were supposed to be taken in by it beyond the technical confusions early on, but great creepy atmosphere and homage to Nightwatch et al. I liked the commitment they showed by getting the Sun to write an article on the Granada Studios being haunted and also using their appearance on The One Show.

Choccywoccyhooha · 29/10/2018 01:15

It wasn't a patch on Ghostwatch. That was groundbreaking interactive TV, this was predictable and try-hard. I'm really disappointed actually.
It's funny a pp mentioned Black Mirror, I missed the reference to it in the programme, but after we watched this I said to DH that Black Mirror does far more creepy and clever this than this.

OrangeOrBlackcurrant · 29/10/2018 11:39

I really enjoyed it!

CaptainHammer · 29/10/2018 18:23

I ended up running late at work so missed it live. It was an ok episode but not one I’d watch again and definitely would have been better live. A Quiet Night In is my favourite episode so I’d have preferred to watch that fully again!

I watched it on iPlayer, so wasn't taken in by the "technical issues". Thought it was a great idea, and very cleverly executed.

HOWEVER, I didn't get the ending. And I feel that I'm missing something because:

  1. They always do great endings and
  2. Didn't they make reference to people not "getting the ending" earlier in the show?

Can anyone enlighten me please?

Housemum · 29/10/2018 23:57

I just thought it was a bit shut really. Not a patch on their other film within a film one (the German chalet)

FieryGhoulie · 30/10/2018 00:52

We stopped the programme and deleted it. Just watched it on catch up and loved it.

Pressed a lot of my spooky buttons. 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 30/10/2018 11:39

Clever with the phoney technical hitches but overall was a bit disappointed. Not a patch on
Once Removed
A Quiet Night In
To Have and to Hold

SeekingClosure · 30/10/2018 12:01

I was disappointed and thought it was a bit silly. I didn't get the end either (the repeated shooting in the head).

I'm surprised that people fell for the 'technical difficulties' though, it was obviously fake to me and very typical of the sort of thing they would do.

TammySwansonTwo · 30/10/2018 22:07

And of course it couldn’t possibly have really been live so feel a bit cheated.

It was live. The footage from faux Most Haunted, old news broadcasts etc enables them to get to the next set up, RS tweeted live, etc.

I thought it was bloody well done. Nothing that scary happened but it scared the crap out of me waiting for something to happen. The sense of dread really got to me, especially when they started playing A Quiet Night In - I knew something was coming, what actually came wasn’t very scary but I was really freaked out until then.

The episodes are always hit and miss and I doubt anyone would particularly want to rewatch this one, but I thought it was great as a one-off experience.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 30/10/2018 23:13

Apparently 1 in 5 viewers gave up when the sound went! Glad I was sceptical!

glamorousgrandmother · 31/10/2018 07:50

I realised what was happening when they switched to A Quiet Night In, up until then I had fallen for the 'technical hitches'. I wasn't impressed and would rather have watched A Quiet Night In.

ANiceLentilHotpot · 31/10/2018 08:25

I thought it was very clever, really well done. We watched it on iPlayer though and unfortunately had already read on Twitter about the 'technical problems' but it was still scary!

Can anyone explain the ending where they kept getting shot over and over again? Or is it supposed to not make sense because they mentioned earlier on about nobody understanding the ending?

TammySwansonTwo · 31/10/2018 08:37

I’m not sure about the ending - it obviously kept repeating to show that the EVP “let us be” was audible in that moment, but I think it was deliberately “inscrutable” as per the joke earlier in the episode. Otherwise I’m very stupid because I’m not getting much else from it. They know that their fans are obsessed with their endings so it’s possibly a play on that.

VanillaSugary · 31/10/2018 08:49

I met RS at an awards ceremony and went marching up to him to announce that he had been in a thing which had been produced by my brother. He kept muttering "small world, small world" and looked very sad in a "Please give me another job" kind of way. This was a few years ago before the LoG / No 9 renaissance had begun. I felt quite sorry for him, actually.

ThanksItHasPockets · 31/10/2018 09:02

The Coronation Street Most Haunted was real! It was from 2005.

My interpretation of the ending was that the spirits had possessed the transmission (hence the Corrie technician who had killed himself saying that there were ‘ghosts in the machine’). There was an early clue to this with the figure who appeared in the garden behind Denise Lawson in the abortive re-run of A Quiet Night In. The spirits killed Steve and Reece and then played their deaths from AQNI over and over as a warning to others, followed by the final, whispered ‘Let us be’.

I thought it was great. It didn’t have the satisfyingly tight narrative of a ‘normal’ episode but I don’t think that’s a fair comparison. It was a high-concept stunt which they pulled off pretty flawlessly. I’ve re-watched it once to spot the ghosts that I missed first time around but I probably wouldn’t watch it again in the way I have Twelve Days of Christine or Diddle Diddle Dumpling. I am pretty gutted that I wasn’t watching live on Sunday night.

Lottapianos · 31/10/2018 12:14

'The sense of dread really got to me, especially when they started playing A Quiet Night In - I knew something was coming, what actually came wasn’t very scary but I was really freaked out until then. '

Exactly! They are the masters of icy cold dread. 'Cold Comfort' from series 2 is one of my favourite episodes, and it used CCTV cameras to similarly creepy effect

I thought it was brilliant and it freaked the living daylights out of me.

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/10/2018 15:08

Deeply disappointed

Usually love no 9 and I didn’t think much of this one

And def wouldn’t want to watch it again

Yes some was live but silly story imo

Tho sure many of you will disagree

TammySwansonTwo · 31/10/2018 20:32

Glad I’m not the only one. It actually really had DH and I quite freaked out for most of it, just waiting for whatever was coming.

CaptainHammer · 02/11/2018 18:39

DH has just watched it again so thought I would give it another try. It was a bit better on a second watch but I still don’t really like the ending. SherlockHolmes I’m going with number 2 or like Tammy said it ended like that because fans over analyse everything.

BakedBeans47 · 03/11/2018 11:06

I didn’t watch live and glad I didn’t as I’d have been in alone and think I’d have found it creepy. I did enjoy it but not one of their best.

Hunlife · 08/11/2018 06:18

He was probably really embarrassed for you but too polite to say so Hmm

crochetmonkey74 · 08/11/2018 12:57

I loved it - I'm a massive Ghostwatch fan and it gave me the same sense of dread. I thought it was a real love affair to what telly can be.
It's going in to my top 5 Inside no 9 episodes
