Press Release from HMV:
20 June 2007
HMV reports that Joseph winner, Lee Mead, has a chance to confirm his new found star status by going straight to the top the singles charts this week.
His performance of 'Any Dream Will Do' - the title song from Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical, 'Joseph And The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat', has just been released as a charity single (CD/download formats), with proceeds going to Children In Need, and could end Rihanna's 5-week run at the top of the charts with 'Umbrella'.
Rihanna currently has a slender lead over Lee of just 1500 sales, which he could easily overturn with a strong sales performance during the second part of the week, particularly on Saturday, when his army of mums and younger fans will be out shopping in force.
'Any Dream Will Do' is accompanied on the CD single by two other tracks - a sing-a-long version and a cover of 'Close Every Door' (also featuring Joseph finalists Keith and Lewis). Tickets for 'Joseph And The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat', which opens at London's Adelphi Theatre in July, are selling out at an amazing rate. The musical, which was first staged in 1968, is based on the biblical tale of Jacob's son Joseph and his eleven brothers.
HMV's Gennaro Castaldo comments:
"It's no surprise that Lee should be vying to top the singles charts this week when you consider the massive TV audience that tuned in regularly to watch Joseph, and how dedicated the programme's fans were to its contestants. It follows that if people made the effort to phone in their votes, there's every chance they'd also be happy buying this song, especially as it supports Children In Need.
"Our stores are reporting that it's mainly parents coming in with their kids that are buying the single."
