I loathe dramas that go from one timeline to another. I keep missing the point.

I won’t bother next week.

Everincreasingfrequency · 02/10/2018 16:03

I don't think Noah can be dead at the point that they stop by the tumbledown shack in the car. Al sounds and looks very cheerful when he's talking to Chloe on the phone - definitely not the demeanour of someone who is trying to cover up a death. And not that surprising that Noah is quiet at that point - he's in a car, which I seem to remember is fairly miraculous at getting a baby to sleep!

I think the earlier thing with the politician's daughter (it's bound to come out but if we can shape the news we can control it type of thing) is to establish Al as someone who is expert at presenting things/spinning the news.

PillowOfSociety · 02/10/2018 18:50

"But, doesn't Alistair's job involve him advising, coaching and "spinning" with Politicians? - political spinning that is, not zumba.
So, could the " 4 weeks before the charges are made public" comment, relate to his work and have nothing to do with Genna Coleman"

True. But unless it was a flashback (was it? totally confused) it still shows him alive and well, rather than murdered by Joanna (or anyone else) as suggested by PPs.

CoolCarrie · 02/10/2018 19:42

Spoiler Alert ( sort of) If anyone wants to knows what happened and don’t want to wait, go to kindle and down load the sample as it gives you the first two chapters of the book.

4forkssake · 02/10/2018 20:28

How do we know the car journey was for hours, littlebillie?

When they stopped to call the daughter, they'd presumably been driving for a while & Alex said something along the lines of it being another couple of hours til they'd arrive at the cottage.

Wingedharpy · 02/10/2018 22:59

Also in that phone call, he indicated there had been a change of plan.
He told his daughter they were not going to drive straight to his Mum's place but were going to go to the cottage/rental first and have a rest and would now come over later/in the evening.
This would give them some time to discuss/plan/conspire to pervert the course of justice etc.

Everincreasingfrequency,
Alistair would certainly need to sound cheerful when speaking to Chloe so as not to arouse suspicion.
Exactly the demeanour required of someone trying to cover up a death and as you say, Al is someone who is expert at presenting things/spinning news.

Everincreasingfrequency · 03/10/2018 07:09

Fair point Wingedharpy! - but I think what struck me was that Al was smiling happily to himself when he phoned Chloe, even though nobody was watching. He would have to be an incredibly calm operator to have thought of "smiling in order to sound cheerful" in those circumstances. So I think that Noah is still asleep at that point (or at the very least they think he is).

But then on the other hand the tv is telling us Al is an incredibly calm operator. So who knows?

Doobydoobydooyeh · 03/10/2018 10:42

I read the sample chapters then bought the book and now reading it. Much better than the drama.

Sidge · 04/10/2018 11:03

I've just watched it.

Once I got used to the jumping around timeline I quite liked it - certainly quite twisty and made me think.

So, my bullet points so far!

She's a teacher, asked her out, and he'd told her he wasn't married but said later his marriage was over but he didn't leave because of Chloe.

Alex and Chloe moved out of the flat and went back to Australia, then Joanna moved in at some point and they had a baby (but they're not married).

He's a political spin doctor, but we don't know what happened to the daughter of the older man he was coaching - it appears his daughter has done something illegal and the charges will be made public in 4 weeks. Probably nothing to do with Joanna, just some misdirection.

He's a total wanker and does very little to help with the baby. Joanna is totally sleep deprived, probably has PND as she has few friends and no family support and Alistair prioritises work.

Joanna has a bad back and regularly takes liquid medication, probably oramorph.

The baby is "teething" and was given meds by dropper on the plane; maybe the meds were mixed up which was why he then slept for ages and she slept all the way to Melbourne? Could also explain why Noah was so quiet after landing. Maybe he was overdosed on her oramorph and died in the car.

The house they were staying in became a crime scene, so the Aussie police must suspect that either something happened there or the baby was there.

They were very quick to shuffle Milk Lady out.

I don't remember seeing Alex or Alistair in the court, so they're either witnesses or not there!

It's quite intriguing; it makes you think you know who the baddie is, but then is it true or is it misdirection? Some things seem too obvious - the spade, the bag of groceries, Alistair being such a tool.

Outside the court the banners said "Justice for Noah" and it's her on trial, not him, so what role does he play in this?

I'm looking forward to next week's now!!

saniner · 04/10/2018 11:17

I think Joanna vomits when she realises Noah has died- or they both realised shortly before "milk lady" goes in and asks something about the baby's age.

NotPennysBoat · 04/10/2018 21:13

Really enjoyed this! Also noticed that neither Alex or Alastair are shown in 'present day', also that Joanna is showing no emotion in court - if the baby was dead then she'd surely be finding all of this reliving the detail very upsetting. Yes she was struggling with PND but she did love the baby (when she woke up on the plane her first thought was ' how is he?').

Delatron · 04/10/2018 21:39

Her demeanour changes completely in court versus how she is in the flashbacks. What’s with the two face hand thing?

Doobydoobydooyeh · 05/10/2018 09:42

Halfway through the book. It's fantastic.

practicallyperfectinmyway · 07/10/2018 00:19

Really enjoyed this, another bbc thumbs up

Bit of a spoiler?

Clawdy · 07/10/2018 10:09

Speculation about a real missing child in this discussion is inappropriate and tasteless.

placemats · 07/10/2018 12:32

Saw the new trailer last night and it looks to be a great episode. Can't wait!

ellenanora5 · 07/10/2018 13:51

Ellieboolou27 · 07/10/2018 20:19

Bestseller · 07/10/2018 21:18

We're obviously supposed to take note of the tampons/breastfeeding link.

The old lady has very stylish sunglasses. There are lots of small details that may or may not be relevant
