New thread for us

OP posts:

I don't know why they didn't just say he is on tour, singing, (which is what Lee Meade is doing in RL) as it is no less likely than a road trip with his gran

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 16/04/2019 07:41

What I find weird about the whole Dom/Lofty storyline is how little chemistry the actors have and yet the writers have persisted in forcing the story down this route.

Most of the time, the two men seem like slightly awkward acquaintances who can chat if forced but really prefer not to. Dom actively hates confiding anything in Lofty and will go to ridiculous lengths to avoid doing so, and he treats him pretty badly.

I just don't believe in the relationship on any level and thus certainly can't be arsed to root for it.

MyOtherProfile · 16/04/2019 08:04

Well I have a theory about that. I might get flamed for it though. It feels to me like there is quite a pro LGBTQ agenda with Holby and I think pushing Dom into a nice marriage with a harmless bloke is part of that. I'm not making any judgement on that in any way but it does seem there's a bit of an agenda.

Flowerpower321 · 16/04/2019 21:00

Please don’t let Carole get a job downstairs- she’s soooo annoying!!

Does lithium only cause heart defects? Why was that the only bit of the baby that was scanned?! You’d think they’d do a full scan in fetal medicine to check everything else!

JuniorAsparagus · 16/04/2019 21:24

Myotherprofile there certainly are s lot of LBG (but not many T) characters. I was trying to explain the different characters to DD, and that was a theme.
It also made it obvious how ludicrous the plots are.
And well done to the person who correctly identified the father.😉

Polarbearflavour · 16/04/2019 21:25

Bye bye Zosia. Sad

ChoccyJules · 16/04/2019 23:35

Knew it was his baby.

MyOtherProfile · 17/04/2019 08:57

And is that Zosia gone or do we think she might come back with Valentine?

there certainly are s lot of LBG (but not many T) characters
Yes, and a surprising number who started out straight and went on to have same sex relationships (Serena, Lofty, Bernie, that other doctor that appeared a few weeks ago from the distant past - Rics ex). It does feel a bit like someone has a drum to bang.

JuniorAsparagus · 17/04/2019 09:29

She didn't leave via the car park, so I think it's a 'leave the door open' scenario.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 17/04/2019 09:43

It's not a 'drum to bang'. It's just getting storylines into the show. And not massively unrealistic given how many people are gay or bi.

MyOtherProfile · 17/04/2019 09:53

It does feel like a drum though given how often it has happened in a relatively short space of time with a relatively small number of people. I'm not making a value judgement, just commenting that it seems a bit OTT. Lile the number of times EastEnders covers the surprise pregnancy trope.

SoupDragon · 17/04/2019 12:58

Are you equally surprised at heterosexual storylines?

MyOtherProfile · 17/04/2019 15:56

@SoupDragon well i did compare it to the pregnancy storylines in EE which do tend to be heterosexual, and I did say it's not a value judgement, just feels like there's been a lot of the same.

SleepingStandingUp · 17/04/2019 21:20

I don't think MyOther is saying it shouldn't be covered or it isn't realistic, just that much like the ^number of surprise pregnancies^ on one little square of houses in London, the number of people coming out as gay in a few departments in one hospital seems very high, especially when a lot of them have been heterosexual until they worked there.

However, ultimately it is similar to how many ^wayward teens move into a small street in Australia to get straightenend out in 2 months - it's about impactful storylines, not adhereing to what happens in normal real life.

Lets face it, a show that reflected the real lives of a bunch iof randonm doctors and nurses, or residents on one estate, or teens in a quiet bit of Australia would be pretty boring.

So its both disproportionately high, like the murder rate also in Eastenders, and also a keep storylines going

SleepingStandingUp · 17/04/2019 21:20

I have to say, my heart broke for Xav tonight, poor guy

Dom i jus wanna slap tbf

MyOtherProfile · 18/04/2019 07:13

Thank you @SleepingStandingUp

Isitmybathtimeyet · 18/04/2019 22:21

I don't think anyone disputes that the storylines are repetitive but it was the idea that there was an agenda behind them that I was puzzled by.

MyOtherProfile · 19/04/2019 04:35

Not sure why it is puzzling. When I've discussed it with my friends we have all wondered if someone behind the scenes is trying to raise the profile of LGB (but as someone pointed out not really T) because there's such a high incidence either of people falling for same sex after previously always being in straight relationships or some other storyline that hangs on them being gay.

I don't really care if that's the case - as I said I'm not making any judgement- it's just that people's sexuality seems to have much more focus on Holby than either in real life or any other show I watch.

Beginning to wish I'd never mentioned it now!

QueenofmyPrinces · 19/04/2019 08:01

I understand what you mean myotherprofile

I also really hope Carol doesn’t get a job in the department because she’s barely tolerable in small doses never mind if she becomes a regular.

I doubt it will be the end of Zosia for now....we’ll i hope not anyway as I like her character.

I really felt sorry for Xav too Sad

Isitmybathtimeyet · 19/04/2019 08:03

OK. It's never jumped out at me to be honest, any more than other plot lines have (many of which are bonkers). Two middle aged women falling for each other, and Lofty over the course of three years! Lola Griffin was such a passing mention.

MyOtherProfile · 19/04/2019 09:20

Yes I felt sorry for Xav too. He's been through a lot. Thank goodness for Donna eh?

On a slight tangent, did you read that the girl who plays her daughter in Millie Inbetween just died so young? My dc loved that programme.

@QueenofmyPrinces thanks

@Isitmybathtimeyet it crops up regularly amongst patients too. I'm not so aware of it in other shows.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 19/04/2019 09:25

I would hazard a guess that there will be a higher proportion of health care professionals who fully and openly embrace their sexuality than maybe in other lines of work. So not anomalous at all that Holby seems to have 'more than its fair share' of gay/bisexual characters.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/04/2019 10:04

That's interesting NewModel, my only real experience of hospitals is with paeds. The women all happily mentioned boyfriends / husbands. We had two male nurses. One happily talked about his fiance as he was running off to get married (in their 40's) and one referred very vaguely to being I na relationship. After a few months of hospitalisation with DS and this nurse being a particular favourite of us all, he "confessed" he was gay. It made not a bit of difference to us, becasue why would it? but he clearly felt there was a risk it would, based on prior experience.
And he knew us by this point, had our son lots, would stand and have a natter when he had choice, did his fair share of dealing with my tears so I'm glad he felt he could just be as open as everyone else was.
But it did make me wonder what he must hear to be so guarded - I know he already got snide comments about men who want to be paediatric nurses, so assume it's an extension of that.

Glad to think that that might not be the same in other wards?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 19/04/2019 11:29

SleepingStandingUp mine was just a hunch but stand to be corrected. I also wonder whether the whole LGBTQIA movement, that's grown apace in recent years, means that gradually many people are more open to the possibility of a wider range of sexual experiences than previously?

SleepingStandingUp · 19/04/2019 12:43

I just hope PATIENTS in hospitals are, I'm sure the colleagues are generally fine. Our nurse, who was amazing and also a man had parents refuse to have his as their nurse because he was a man.
