Oh I miss the bits of the show that would explain where bakes originated etc! Forgotten about them!

And I agree that the showstoppers are getting really silly now!

wowfudge · 26/09/2018 12:49

I'm not sure they're getting sillier - a couple of series ago they had to make chocolate teacakes, so marshmallow, jam, digestive biscuit and tempered chocolate. No one ever would irl.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 26/09/2018 12:54

I didn't like them showing him crying and talking about his wife; BBC Bake Off never went for mawkish, exploitative emotion like that. I find it intrusive and insensitive. I always remember how Mel and Sue used to stand next to upset bakers and say unbroadcastable words so they couldn't use the footage of them when they were emotional. Far more classy.

I feel exactly the same Nikita - this is a cookery competition - not who has the most heartbreaking background. It's humiliating for the contestant and uncomfortable for any viewer with an ounce of empathy.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 26/09/2018 12:58

Or do the producers just fear repetition and are scraping the barrel casting too big a net to come up with themes? And have the competitors been briefed that 'traditional' flavours and combinations will be marked down? Hmmm. off to console myself and bake some garlic and petroleum shortbread

I've wondered the same - personally, repetition wouldn't bother me. I'm always so impressed with the skill and ingenuity whatever the challenge is.

Was your shortbread nice?

jay55 · 26/09/2018 13:31

I’d like a bit of repition, I want to see them hand raising pies each year, making giant constructions out of bread or biscuits and a croquembouche, I want to be able to compare bakers from previous seasons now and then. Not every round the same but no harm in having a few repeats.

tlove · 26/09/2018 13:34

I agree, there's nowt wrong with some repetition!

Limer · 26/09/2018 13:41

Rahul reminds me of Timothy Lumsden with his endless squawking of "Sorry!"

I'm liking Kim-Joy more and more as the weeks go on, she seems a genuinely lovely person and is impressively creative.

It's pies next week, hopefully a return to some solid principles of baking and good ideas for those of us watching for inspiration.

BrendasUmbrella · 26/09/2018 14:02

Rahul was my Star Baker again. I actually hurt my self snort laughing when he apologized to the stool for bumping it Grin

It's a shame the end of the show had to be such a downer. Bake Off is my feel-good TV fix. Why are they set on making the departing contestants cry? I don't like it.

BrendasUmbrella · 26/09/2018 14:04

I suppose I was wrong about Paul disproportionately giving his handshakes to men as more women got them this week. And this is the week the tabloids are asking if his handshakes are over-done. I'm saying nothing...

StripySocksAndDocs · 26/09/2018 14:06

That's what I thought Igottastartthinkingbee, I was curious where in the West Midlands. For no other reason than I'm a nosey sod. He's a nice subtle accent.

LoniceraJaponica · 26/09/2018 14:13

I agree that the handshakes have now been devalued since the rarity value has decreased. I don't understand the dislike for Karen. I bet in real life she is a good laugh.

tlove · 26/09/2018 14:16

The handshakes are now 'a thing' which is most annoying! Completely cringe-worthy

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 26/09/2018 14:22

I think Kim Joy might win. Rahul is incredibly skilled and consistent but KJ is more marketable with her image and creativity. Just a hunch.

I'd almost like to see Rahul have a baking disaster Blush one week just to humanise him a bit. That said it would be excruciating viewing, he could well implode.

raisedbyguineapigs · 26/09/2018 14:29

I remember with Rahul in the first episode, they had a clip of him skyping his mum in India and she told him his hair looked untidy or something! I thought that was a bit mean to put on telly and just fed into his 'story' of him being a poor put upon soul. He's a nuclear physicist ffs! And then him lamenting that his mum probably wouldn't like his ginger cake this week!

ppeatfruit · 26/09/2018 14:39

whatashower I don't reckon that Prue and Paul would be happy to taste a load of unusual flavours (unless they were delicious of course). The presenters do have power because Mel and Sue used theirs. Seeing crying afterwards did happen in the last series.

I don't think that Briony does herself any favours majoring on all that sticky sugary stuff. I love meringue but with syrup? We're supposed to be cutting down on sugar !

Limer · 26/09/2018 14:58

Re Terry's West Midlands origins - I was passing through Cleobury Mortimer about a fortnight before this series started, and saw a sign in the local shop wishing good luck to Terry in Bake Off.

ppeatfruit · 26/09/2018 15:11

Gareth Also KJ or Manon have the resilience which it seems that Rahul lacks, It wouldn't be fair on him to expect him to do all the public appearances that would be necesary if he won etc. ( I said earlier that I wondered if he'd watched GBBO!).

DH ( he's in telly PR ) said that Channel 4 would look after him properly but I'm not so sure Grin

Apart from Nadya they’ve all been 5 minute wonders so I’m not sure it matters if someone has staying power

ppeatfruit · 27/09/2018 09:38

I don't know Polly Quite a few ex contestants do stuff like write in the newspaper food sections and appear on telly. They're not nec. ex winners though.

ppeatfruit · 27/09/2018 09:40

Nadiya has really hit the big time, she deserves to and obviously enjoys being in the public eye. Her manner is so easy going and her cooking is great.

YoloSwaggins · 27/09/2018 10:26

Am I the only one that actually loves Prue's outfits? I love it - the colours, the KerPlunk necklace, the wind-the-beads-round-the-wire necklace from last night, the glasses...

She's basically my style goals for when I retire.

The 2016 winner got married last weekend and she was referred to as TV star yet I had no idea who she was despite watching the series.

Nadya sticks out from the rest of them who to be quite honest we’re rather forgettable.
