Emily has been kicked out of Big Brother for using a racist word

Apparently she called Charley the N word in a 'joking manner' whilst they were dancing and was chucked out at 3 in the morning.

Stupid, silly naive girl

I understand 40+, but you?d never admit that in RL would you?

Emily is so young (and yound for her age IMO) and probably has no memory or experience of there being a problem with the n word, IYSWIM.

It?s embarrassing to admit but when I was a kid I remember calling people spaz and Joey in the playground and telling ?paki? jokes, because I was too young to understand. The difference is that now I do understand, and I understood perfectly well by the time I was Emily?s age. The small country school I went to had one black boy and two Indian girls but I don?t remember there being any real problems with racism, even though they were so ?different? to everyone else at school (they may tell a different story of course). Bristol?s much more multicultural ? does this mean there?s more racism, or is everyone desensitised?

I?m not trying to make excuses for her, far from it, she should know better. Part of it I think is that she?s incredibly arrogant and probably thought she was above the rules ? like with the discussion of nominations!

fortyplus · 07/06/2007 16:26

You're quite right - I wouldn't say that in rl.

My black and Asian friends do say that they think there's less racism now than when they were younger, so hopefully that's a positive sign.

I suppose at its least offensive level 'racism' ie how I labelled myself is just a curiosity about the differences in other people's lives.

It's a shame that this curiosity sometimes gets channelled into abuse. It's no more subtle than a football thug beating up someone wearing a shirt from a different team.

BethBoo · 07/06/2007 16:27

I agree with you 40+. We all have the capability to be judgemental and racist, what stops the majority is intelligence and class! Oh and not wanting to make someone feel like crap!

To pick up on your other point since moving away from Brixton to the home counties my quota of people from other races has diminished. But I have become for many of my new friends their black friend in an interracial relationship!

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 07/06/2007 16:32

they are both as bad as each other.

It's not about racism. That one word wouldn't have even been noticed had it not been for all the fuss with the celeb bb

BethBoo - here's another little anecdote for you...

One day I was at the park and a little boy climbed into the tree next to me in one leap, then swung from branch to branch - amazingly athletic & strong. I was incredibly impressed and was about to say to his mum 'Goodness, he looks just like a little monkey, doesn't he?' But I didn't say that - because the child was black. If it had been a white boy exhibiting the same skill I would have said it.

I felt a bit disturbed that my reaction to (or at least my comment on) the child's behaviour was influenced by his colour. I mentioned this to my Nigerian friend, who just laughed & said that she thought I was just being sensitive to the fact that I didn't know the mum and she might have taken the comment the wrong way.

But it's still food for thought - we make judgements about people on first appearances whether we like it or not, don't we?

totaleclipse · 07/06/2007 20:16

Oh dear, I dont think that link is a good idea, think it needs to be removed!!

TaylorsMummy · 07/06/2007 20:17

i've reported it

southeastastra · 07/06/2007 20:21

gawd

electra · 07/06/2007 20:24

The Devil wears Primark - don't you dare try to justify racism of any kind by posting something which you deem to define it because it is somehow "worse". WTF??!!

woopsadaisy · 07/06/2007 20:28

just tried to go in youtube link but its not working

whats it about???

is it emily thing??

plummymummy · 07/06/2007 20:29

thedevil - obviously my point about Brixton was anecdotal and an example because it has a large black population. As for stabbing - seems to be a preoccupation of yours (not mine). In no way, shape or form did I ever mention violence but it is interesting that you made that assumption.

plummymummy · 07/06/2007 20:30

The devil - I worry about the next generation sometimes.

bettybobo · 07/06/2007 20:31

im truly disgusted about that link (and only saw the title, no way im watching that report away!
bloody hell that is the worst thing ive seen someone do on mn.
ffs!!

woopsadaisy · 07/06/2007 20:31

some body pleeease tell me what was on link!! i have a stone age crap comp and it wont work!!

also am to nosy for own good

southeastastra · 07/06/2007 20:33

stupid american teenagers making another girl say the word and then posting in on the net. nice people.

totaleclipse · 07/06/2007 20:34

I would explain it, but that would make my post offensive, theres no nice way to explain it.

bettybobo · 07/06/2007 20:34

anyway back to the op. Yes little jamaican and nigerian etc boys around south london do say it on the 436 bus etc, and im a little worried. But if they are ok with it to eachother then not soo bad. But unacceptable for a white person to say it. You can only 'reclaim' a word if applies to yourself.
eg gay saying 'queer' etc.

woopsadaisy · 07/06/2007 20:35

from all the posts perhaps its best if i dont watch it

getting back to the emily frob bb, im quite surprised as i thought that she seemed quite intelligent

TaylorsMummy · 07/06/2007 20:37

i haven't watched it and wouldn't want to.the title makes me angry enough.what kind of a freak would go looking for stuff like that??

hopefully it will be removed soon

bettybobo · 07/06/2007 20:38

yeh i agree whoopsydaisy i quite liked her at first cos didnt seem as ditsy as some of the others. Probably led a very sheltered life and is ignorant,
totally silly thing to say

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 07/06/2007 20:38

Yes that was an awful clip, but I thought it might illustrate how there are much much worse things happening in terms of racist abuse. There is no need to get hysterical.
