We've just had New Years so January 1991 at the moment

BluthsFrozenBananas · 25/11/2018 20:55

I got a bit behind and didn’t notice that my sky box had stopped recording these (and a whole lot of other things too, I think it’s screwed) so I’ve missed the babies being born, Ken and his suicide attempt and Christmas Sad .

southeastdweller · 25/11/2018 21:18

Thanks, I just watched on YouTube the suicide attempt episode. Very good acting from Julie Goodyear and William Roache and the writing worked because it touched on realistic, common emotions and experiences. The end was sad as well with poor Mavis. Thelma Barlow was very underrated as Mavis, she had a wide acting range and Mavis never felt caricatured.

clowdyweewee · 25/11/2018 21:43

I only realised how good Thelma Barlow is when she starred in dinnerladies.

WishfulSprouts · 26/11/2018 13:38

Can anyone please catch me up my recordings failed for last week so I missed Xmas eps. I was up to where done and ivy had the toddler and mum moving into there’s- what happened with that please.
And how did alma find out did mike tell her?
Thanks for any info

Yoyooo · 26/11/2018 15:49

Loved the Nigel Havers reference!

legodisasterzone · 26/11/2018 16:18

Ivy was overbearing and drove Marie out-she left on Christmas Day to go back to her flat.
Mike told Alma and she went straight back to her flat. Swine!
Gail went into labour at Audrey’s.
It was how Christmas episodes should be-loads of humour when Jack bought Cera a dog and it kept them prisoner in their room, then chased Alec down the street Grin

legodisasterzone · 26/11/2018 16:19

Cera??!! Vera

Kannet · 26/11/2018 16:51

I want to know what the "big film" was. The one several mentioned on New Year's Eve

OP posts:
BluthsFrozenBananas · 26/11/2018 17:18

On Christmas Day 1990 BBC had the TV premiere of ET, while ITV showed Moonraker in the afternoon and Beverly Hills Cop 2 in the evening. I don’t have an amazing memory, the wonderful TV Cream website has all the main channels tv Christmas offerings logged from 1970 onwards.

Kannet · 26/11/2018 18:03

This was the big film on New Year's Eve. They all talked about it like it's a thing

OP posts:
AamdC · 26/11/2018 18:12

I have no.idea , o would have been 17 on years 1990 so no.doubt under age drinking... Would it have been a newish film or sometjing like Ben Hur?

AamdC · 26/11/2018 18:13

New years eve!

Yoyooo · 26/11/2018 18:20

Didn't it show it in the Barlows house? Something with cowboys and Indians

BluthsFrozenBananas · 26/11/2018 18:25

Ah, TV Cream only have the Christmas schedules, not the new year ones.

HelenaDove · 27/11/2018 02:11

this site has them too.

I would love to see what happened to Kimberly. I bet she became her mother

OP posts:
kikashi · 27/11/2018 08:12

We're not quite done with her yet iirc (although there is a gap)

I'm glad that story is over, Curly was repugnant in it.

AamdC · 27/11/2018 08:15

1991 in some ways it seems like 1991 was just a few years ago to me but than theres some funny things like Jim giving the pub number as his second number v, everyone would have their own phone now, they would have in 2001 as well but its a smart phone now and his business would be advertised on line etc!,Everyone seems to drink so much , a couple at lunch time, a couple after work than popping to the pub after tea Shock

WishfulSprouts · 27/11/2018 09:34

Yes I thought that about the drinking too! No problem going on your lunch hour and having a couple of gins then back to work 🤔 especially Alma I’m concerned about her and that deep fat fryer after too many g and t’s 😂

AamdC · 27/11/2018 10:04

Quite wishful i love a glass of wine and im sure some mumsnetters would be clutching their pearls at my wine consumption , but theres no way i could have a coyple of glassses at lunch time and be sensible and coherent and back to work Grin

kikashi · 27/11/2018 12:22

I loved a boozy lunch in the 80's, I used to feel all mellow after lunch as did the rest of the staff. It wasn't everyday though. By 1990 contracts had changed and being under the influence was made gross misconduct to loud dissent. Some people still had spirits in their filing cabinet for those times when you really need a snifter.

I did go to the pub a lot after work or you would pop in for a drink whilst out shopping, before the cinema, to meet up (before mobile phones)etc.

My adult DC rarely go to pubs, unless it is a gastro pub for a meal now and again with older relatives or a weatherspoons where food is cheap. Pubs are so expensive now. People also drink more at home. No need to get a "carry out" like Kev did last episode when shops are open 24/7 and a lot cheaper.

I think, like now in Corrie, people drank in the pub, ate in the cafe more than you would in RL so that the characters could interact. Brookside famously was the first soap not to have a pub as a hub. Eventually, they had a row of shops iirc.

I like how Betterbuys is a real supermarket and not a faked up set.

southeastdweller · 27/11/2018 16:40

The suicide attempt episode is on YouTube:

WishfulSprouts · 27/11/2018 21:35

I don’t have much time to watch tv really but am watching classic corrie daily completely given up on regular corrie now

Kannet · 28/11/2018 16:06

There seems to be a relaxed attitude to domestic violence, mark casually saying he would break Jenny's neck and des saying "I hope he wallops you one" or words to that effect. It surprised me
