So, classic Eastenders starts airing on the UKTV Drama channel from tomorrow! Two episodes from noon, and they’ll also be on UKTV catchup.

Use this thread to talk about Den, Angie, Arthur, poodle perms, poor fashion choices and Ethel’s Willy.

I think Den feels immense guilt , and he would have mixed emotons ovet the baby

tobee · 08/11/2018 15:54

The Den and Michelle dodginess is interesting viewed now. But the interesting thing is, although it was thought dodgy then, it wasn't thought that dodgy. Savile has really put this into the foreground. I think it was more just seen as something that happened then etc.

tobee · 08/11/2018 15:55

When I say that about Savile I mean that's the most high profile of several similar things.

SausageBrain · 08/11/2018 16:49

Hope you don't mind me joining in, I've been watching along at home when I can.

It was funny seeing Michelle stay in hospital for so long after having the baby. I'd hate to stay in for so long, I was in and out the same day earlier this year when I had mine! I was actually born the same year as baby Vicki so it's interesting to see what might have gone on when my mum had me. My mum said epidurals weren't really a thing back then (don't know how true this is though?!) and she only had pethidine when she had me. I didn't see any mention of epidurals when Michelle was having the baby so who knows?! Poor cow.

The Den/Michelle stuff is definitely quite grim and dark by today's standards - her best friend's dad!!

Am finding Lofty really irritating and agree about Arthur seeming old despite only being in his 40s (was quite Shock when I realised how old he was supposed to be).

Donutface2 · 08/11/2018 17:07

Oh god Arthur’s talking about the Christmas club money.

AamdC · 08/11/2018 18:22

Ah the xmas club ......

AamdC · 08/11/2018 18:24

My friend had a baby in 1993 so only a few years later she only stayed in a day or two .

MrsTommyBanks · 08/11/2018 19:58

I had my first in 1987 and was in hospital for 5 days. It was standard then.

MrsTommyBanks · 08/11/2018 20:00

Had my next in 1990 and was in 24 hrs. My third in 1992 and went home 6 hrs after delivery.

AamdC · 08/11/2018 20:40

Wow five days , even if you and baby were healthy etc? what did you do for five days?

AamdC · 08/11/2018 20:50

Actually thpugh i can see it would be a good idea if you were a first time mum and was breast fedding etc , i had two fairly complicated births in 2006 and 2010 and was only kept in over night both times because i needeed blood tests and i think i had IV antibiotics.

MrsTommyBanks · 08/11/2018 21:07

Believe it or not. When the baby was sleeping we mostly sat in the smoking/tv/day room.
The World has certainly changed an awful lot.

MrsTommyBanks · 08/11/2018 21:10

Breast feeding wasn't even encouraged. I was an 18 yo first time Mum and when the midwife said, "Baby is hungry I will make him a bottle." I was to intimidated to say I wanted to feed him myself.
It's really shocking looking back.
I was much more confident with my next two and breast fed them both.

AamdC · 08/11/2018 21:21

I was born inn73 and my sister in.72 my dad didnt witness either of our births it just wasent a thing than , it must of been a frightening and lonely time for the mum!

HelenaDove · 09/11/2018 00:39

Having read the recent thread re. the MN birth injuries campaign (i dont have DC) many mums feel its a bit of a conveyer belt now.

HelenaDove · 09/11/2018 00:40

im also a 1973 baby.

HelenaDove · 09/11/2018 00:46

@tobee One of the school bus drivers ran off with a sixth former RL not EE Cant give any more detail

tobee · 09/11/2018 01:20

ShockShockShockHelena!

There was a big scandal at the other secondary in my area. It was a church school, their vicar, who was attached to the school, was having sex with some pupils!

I was a 68 baby! My dad went to a work meeting when I was born!

HelenaDove · 09/11/2018 01:27

Fucking hell...........Arthur was an arse.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/11/2018 10:04

I haven't watched this week but IIRC Michelles midwife (the actor) came back later as Blossom ( Alan Jackson's gran) . I'll double check when I watch,

SausageBrain · 09/11/2018 10:14

Think you are right, 70isaLimitNotaTarget. Thought I recognised her!

AamdC · 09/11/2018 11:11

Yes she was 70 !

MrsTommyBanks · 09/11/2018 12:18

Omg Pat! I'd forgotten she came in this early.

dingdongdigeridoo · 09/11/2018 12:48

Pat!!!! She’s awesome. I feel bad for her because people keep bringing up her weight. It must have been awful to be bigger in previous decades when most people were slim. I laughed at Pauline fretting about Michelle’s figure.

Those towelling nappies! My younger brothers used those and they were so grim.

Interesting to hear about maternity care in the 70s and 80s. Both my births were the conveyor belt experience. The wards were so rammed they were desperate to get rid of you. And I was desperate to escape. They let partners sleep on the wards too now. I gave birth 9 weeks ago and was kept awake all night by someone’s DH snoring.
