I've broken my 30-odd year habit of watching soaps thanks to the World Cup (yay) and Love Island and rather than go back to them, am trying to build up a list of Things to Watch on an evening although we only really have 2 hours to watch telly before bedtime. We've done Series 1 of Unforgotten and are half way through season 2 (and watching series 3 live time).

I've seen Line of Duty but DH didn't watch it at the time it was on, so I plan to re-visit those next - but these are the kind of things I like to watch. I prefer British made dramas to American.

Are there any other series you can think of that we might enjoy - we have Netflix and Virgin Media boxsets. I don't like anything grisly or gory tho'

TIA

Haven’t watched Happy Valley myself but have been told by people who I trust to know these things that it is the most representative of actual coppering, as well as being properly good.

Oh yes Broadchurch is fantastic. I knew 'whodunnit' before I watched series 1 as people in work had discussed it and I watched it after it had aired but it didn't take away from it! That's how good it is, season 1 particularly!

YeTalkShiteHen · 03/08/2018 19:47

Unforgotten (series 3 on itv on Sundays, the other two on catch up)

Broadchurch and Luther too.

Scott & Bailey definitely.

DamsonGin · 03/08/2018 19:50

Hinterland

Violetparis · 03/08/2018 19:50

Safe on Netflix is good, I really like Inspector George Gently too.

Arkengarthdale · 03/08/2018 19:50

Shetland has 4 series and the gorgeous Dougie Henshall 😍

Series 3 was particularly good and a departure from previous series - one long story told over six episodes

fleshmarketclose · 03/08/2018 19:51

Wire in the Blood

Livedandlearned · 03/08/2018 19:51

Happy Valley is great

ElspethFlashman · 03/08/2018 19:52

Line of Duty times a million.

Far fetched? Yep. But compulsive TV.

BiscuitMachine · 03/08/2018 19:56

Another vote for Happy Valley, it’s fantastic. Shetland is wonderful, and the scenery is amazing (I also am a fan of Mr. Henshall Smile).

Disfordarkchocolate · 03/08/2018 19:57

Love Hinterland, and you have to pay attention with the subtitles. Endeavour is really good, as is No Offence and Shetland. Vera is only good if you block out all the terrible north east accents.

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 03/08/2018 19:58

Unforgotten
Safe
Happy Valley
River

I know you said you didn't want American BUT Manhunt : Unabomber is properly good.

The whole of Prime Suspect is also on Netflix

LadyPenelope68 · 03/08/2018 20:00

Happy Valley
Broad church
Keeping Faith

LadyPenelope68 · 03/08/2018 20:00

Apple Tree Yard

ScarletPower · 03/08/2018 20:05

Wow, thanks everyone - I have plenty to be going at now!!!

If you've not watched Prime Suspect before, I highly recommend it. Series one is a masterpiece. I have genuinely never seen anything on TV that matches its gripping intensity. Series two is also very good.

haribosmarties · 03/08/2018 20:19

I love Endeavour and Happy Valley

supercalifragilistic2 · 03/08/2018 20:35

Life on mars
Unforgotten
Line of duty
Scott and bailey
Happy valley (this should be next in your list!)
Whitechapel (I think it's called that, it's got Rupert perry jones in itGrin)
Vera Blush
No offence
Marcella
The missing or missing I think it's called (it's got James Nesbit in, not so much a police drama, but a good drama anyway)
24 hours in police custody (its technically a documentary, but very good. They've just finished the latest series, so it's on Chanel 4 catch up)
Safe (Netflix)
Evil genius (Netflix, but is a documentary and very good, and a proper WTF sort of show)

I loves a good police show

If your desperate and feel a touch of nostalgia for the 80's and 90's. You can always watch The Bill on gold 👍

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 03/08/2018 20:42

Blue Murder is good; it’s hardly ever mentioned but you can sometimes get it on Prime or Netflix

I am watching S2 of The Bletchley Ciecle right now. It’s not as good as S1 - which was excellent - but still very watchable

And yes, if you haven’t watched Luther then you are in for a MASSIVE treat. But it is both grisly and gory in parts. I’ve never trusted noises in the loft since...

cheesydoesit · 03/08/2018 21:09

If you have itvhub then go to the channel itv3 section and quite a few of shows mentioned here are accessible on it.

Polkadotdelight · 03/08/2018 21:12

Luther, Luther, Luther!

0hCrepe · 03/08/2018 21:18

I really enjoyed strike

Deadheadstickeronacadillac · 03/08/2018 21:22

NCIS and spin offs every time
Defo with pp's about Morse, Lewis and Endeavour...just beautiful pieces of television

Bibesia · 04/08/2018 01:06

Some episodes of Blue Murder are on ITV at the moment, and worth catching before they disappear.

Broadchurch series 1 was good, but series 2 was truly dreadful.
