Hi all

Here is the next thread for those who are watching The Handmaid's Tale Season 2 on Channel 4. Please don't put any spoilers on this - the other thread (for those in other countries who are watching ahead of the UK) is:

I'm loving the recommendations for Marge Piercy! I didn't think anyone had ever read any of her books. She is a fantastic writer, but I had completely forgotten about Woman on the Edge of Time, so will go back and re-read that. The first book of hers I read was Braided Lives and it made a huge impression on me.

TomHardysBackpack · 11/08/2018 08:05

Aridane - definitely more than 3 series

glamorousgrandmother · 11/08/2018 08:22

I read there were going to be 10 series too but that is way too many. The third should come to some kind of conclusion.

Aridane · 11/08/2018 08:24

Oh -;I’ve googled and you may be right!!

Aridane · 11/08/2018 08:27

Quote from article on number of series - no spoilers.

Think a mistake to,go beyond 3!

How many seasons of The Handmaid's Tale will there be?
So, how many seasons of The Handmaid's Tale will there be? According to Hulu CEO Randy Freer, maybe up to 10 seasons.

In an interview with Variety last week, Freer said, that The Handmaid's Tale series' "creative process will determine" if there are more seasons to come.

"And I think that’s one of the benefits for creators in the streaming world — shows can take a natural progression, they can live for as long as they should live or they can end," Freer continued. "I think it’s unfair sometimes in the characterization of broadcast television that we talk about a show’s been canceled after four years or seven years, whatever it is… Look, I hope, as success goes, there’s 10 seasons of The Handmaid's Tale."

In fact, this isn’t the first time executives toyed with the idea of 10 seasons. Showrunner Bruce Miller even told The Hollywood Reporter back in January, "I roughed it out to about 10 seasons when I was first working on it," though he added that they’re "not going beyond" the Margaret Atwood’s novel on which it’s based.

Could The Handmaid's Tale series last for 10 whole seasons?
So, if Freer and Miller had it their way, the series would extend beyond a Handmaid's Tale season 3. But does the Hulu original have enough juice to last for 10 seasons?

Caroline Crampton, co-host of the pop culture podcast SRSLY, told BBC that she was "barely on board with" the second season.

"I think they've lost the reason why people loved the first series and indeed loved the book — it had this very well-constructed narrative arc," she said. "When it got to the natural ending point of that person's story, it stopped." From a "quality point of view," she doesn’t think it makes sense to extend the series.

If it goes to ten series, they will have to stop the story being about June, and make it about other people in Gilead.

AnnieKenney · 11/08/2018 09:30

BIWI Me too! (Braided Lives)

There's a line in it which has always stuck with me where one of the women is being hassled by her boyfriend for them to move in together which goes 'In the end she said yes because she couldn't say no and she couldnt say I dont know forever'. Sadly I've seen that dynamic play out in far too many relationships.

Only Ever Yours is very cleverly done but so, so creepy.

WitchSharkadder · 11/08/2018 15:06

Rousette, I do t think Margaret’s atwood has the power to stop it going for 10 seasons. I read an interview with her in which she said that she sold all rights to THT long ago, for the 1990 film and, although Bruce Miller brought her onboard for the series because he wanted her input, she’s nothing more than an employee really and does not have a final say.

I’d love to see 10 seasons in a way but I can’t see how they would keep up the quality, they certainly can’t keep June’s story going for that long without it becoming repetitive.

OhHolyJesus · 11/08/2018 15:38

Just seen a magazine mention for a book called Vox coming out later this month - a dystopian story where women are only allowed to say 100 words a day. By Christina Dalcher. On my wish list!

Roussette · 11/08/2018 15:57

I didnt know that Witch that she'd sold the rights, I can't imagine more than say 3 series, I think the quality will be compromised if it goes on and on

WitchSharkadder · 11/08/2018 17:14

They’d have to come up with a new angle wouldn’t they. I don’t think viewers will hang on to see June escape for very much longer. I could see S3 being her getting out and then perhaps one more season based in Canada showing her recovery from the psychological trauma and trying to get her children out. Beyond that, I really don’t know, like I said, they’d have to go a completely new direction.

BIWI · 11/08/2018 17:57

Given that the whole focus has been on, and narration provided by, June, it's difficult to see how they could suddenly make it not about her.

It's a bit like Homeland, which has just gone on far too long!

Iggi999 · 11/08/2018 18:02

I would say fuck you 50 times.

theredjellybean · 11/08/2018 18:29

@Iggi999

i might say fuck orf ( in my best posh voice) to mix it up a bit

Iggi999 · 11/08/2018 18:55

...obviously if we were speaking to other women we’d say something more constructive, like “where are the guns we need to get rid of these motherfuckers” (12)

QuackPorridgeBacon · 11/08/2018 19:17

I’m intrigued by vox and plan to buy it when it’s out. I’m fascinated by all these books people are mentioning. I’ve started reading the sample for ‘only ever yours” it’s odd but I’m drawn in already and think I might buy it tonight. Have been contemplating with the power but not sure if it’s something I’d be interested in going by reviews I have read. Suicide club seems interesting too.

morningtoncrescent62 · 11/08/2018 19:26

If they really do 10 series they'll presumably have to move into the further future at some point which might be interesting. I'd be intrigued to see what they would come up with say 30 years from current Gilead time. Because of course the rest of the world wouldn't be standing still.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 11/08/2018 20:05

or even 'where guns must remove motherfuckers' (5).

I think I would speak German, for the long compound words.

HuguenotJo · 11/08/2018 22:47

Oh yes - "Motherfuckerremovingguns - where?"

HuguenotJo · 11/08/2018 23:14

Don't you think we'd actually come up with an alternative form of communication based on the raising of eyebrows, hoiking of bosoms and perhaps the occasional fart?

inquiquotiokixul · 12/08/2018 00:07

Mime? Interpretive dance? Morse code?

Well, thanks for that. Not overthinking what could happen and how badly it must have gone.

JuneOsbourne · 12/08/2018 04:06

Stop!!! We don't want to know!
