Hi all

Here is the next thread for those who are watching The Handmaid's Tale Season 2 on Channel 4. Please don't put any spoilers on this - the other thread (for those in other countries who are watching ahead of the UK) is:

Commander Ls wife asking Emily for her real name was fabulous

Agree, I shouted YES at the TV when she asked Grin

EmpressOfSpartacus · 07/08/2018 15:25

Empress.. Good point about June and nick being older but they have had a chance.. In the car, on the way to see hannah.. Nick had a gun and official car.. They could have tried...

Yes. And I have absolutely no idea why they didn't.

WipsGlitter · 07/08/2018 15:29

Because Nick knew how much she missed Hannah and wanted her to have the chance to see her?

theredjellybean · 07/08/2018 15:49

But did nick know what he was taking her too?

thanksamillion · 07/08/2018 16:02

Even though Nick is an eye I don't think they would have got far. There must be road blocks etc the closer you get to the border which would be heavily armed.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 07/08/2018 16:46

I don't think they could have got away. The moment they get out of the car to have their papers checked or whatever June's pregnancy is obvious and alarm bells go off because pregnancy is rare in Gilead, even if they don't know there's a missing handmaid.
I also don't think we can assume he has a full tank of petrol.

extinctspecies · 07/08/2018 16:49

The other thing is the fate of Eden & Isaac has underlined very forcefully how people are treated in the regime for breaking the rules - for adultery. It makes it much harder for Nick & June to attempt an escape now.

WatermelonGold · 07/08/2018 16:52

Did anyone else think that CLawrence and his wife may have lost a child?

I’m sure he said to Emily something like ‘we both know how that feels’ after talking about her losing her wife and child.

I might be completely imagining it but if he lost a child due to the regime, that could be a reason why he might turn on Gilead.

badteacher · 07/08/2018 16:54

How did Moira get through checkpoints can someone remind me ?

MrsAidanTurner · 07/08/2018 16:57

C Lawrence said he was a hand in the good old days what does he that mean??

Amazed nick hasn't tried to organise a run away again with June

MargoLovebutter · 07/08/2018 16:57

badteacher, I don't think she did. She stumbled through the snowy wastes of what was Northern Gilead until she made it to Canada. She wasn't even sure she was in Canada.

WatermelonGold · 07/08/2018 16:58

bad I remember her running through snow but not much else, amazing how quickly you forget details!

MrsAidanTurner · 07/08/2018 16:59

I'm sure nick could have forged papers by now for escape.. Got uniforms..

FeckingFeckers · 07/08/2018 17:07

Need to watch the last ep but I'm place marking.

How the hell is this thread half filled already ShockBlush

QuackPorridgeBacon · 07/08/2018 17:23

I think people believe nick should have the power to escape seeing as he is an eye. But to most people in gilead he is just a driver. An eye is to watch the commanders I don’t think it means he can leave whenever he wants or access fake papers etc. He’s just as stuck as June just in a different and less abusive way, physically anyway.

EmpressOfSpartacus · 07/08/2018 17:26

C Lawrence said he was a hand in the good old days what does he that mean??

He meant the penalty for reading used to be a hand, not a finger.

kashleesi · 07/08/2018 17:41

I bet nick only gets rations of petrol, just enough for where they need him to go. Like the food vouchers. Can’t imagine him being able to fill up a full tank whenever he fancies.

LagerthaTheShieldMaiden · 07/08/2018 18:02

He meant the penalty for reading used to be a hand, not a finger

😮 Is that what he meant! I was wondering about that too. Tempted to watch it again tonight!

LagerthaTheShieldMaiden · 07/08/2018 18:03

Yeah, I bet you're right kashleesi, surely he can't just nip off and fill up!

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 07/08/2018 18:21

What was on the cartoon Emily read? Did anyone see?

Roussette · 07/08/2018 18:22

I don't think the cartoon meant anything but if you're not allowed to read you must be totally starved of the written word and desperate

AGnu · 07/08/2018 18:45

I wonder when "the good olds days" was. Do you think the lesser penalty was something Serena & June changed?

JuneOsbourne · 07/08/2018 19:15

No they probably just realised that one handed women were less use in the kitchen.

Re the losing a child thing, yes I definitely heard that too, Watermelon. I'd forgotten about it until now, but it's bound to be important.

WhirlwindHugs · 07/08/2018 19:21

I'm not sure about the cartoons but they looked like old historic ones so possibly also stolen from a museum.

When the season finishes I'm going to be googling all of the art and clutter in Lawrence's house and trying to spot any deeper meaning. I'm too nervous about spoilers to do it now!

desperatelyseekingcaffeine · 07/08/2018 19:28

The cartoons looked a bit like Persepolis, which talks about a young girl's life in Iran during the revolution.

I'm hoping he turns out to be as good as anyone ever does in Gilead. The interaction with his Martha was reassuring, but sounds like he's been either wittingly or unwittingly the cause of the colonies at least.
