ยฃ21k a year????? Bloody hell!

I spend ยฃ50 a week for dd and I, even if I use that as a base it would be ยฃ6500 per year in my house! And actually probably less as economy of scale would make it cheaper too. Wtf!

When I heard the guys say they thought they could SAVE them ยฃ200 a week I knew it'd be high but omg!

ellenanora5 · 12/07/2018 20:38

I know its huge isn't it, I'm still stunned at the takeaway cost

Graphista · 12/07/2018 20:39

Just checked that's DOUBLE my total INCOME per week.

Am I the only one thinking I hope the dad weaning off the Coke is being medically advised on?

I stopped caffeine to ttc and hadn't realised how much I was having (strong black coffee at work, filter coffee) and I felt SO ill I went to Dr not knowing what was wrong. Dr sussed it and I was advised to go back to having some caffeine but he gave me a structured way of doing it so I didn't suffer the withdrawal - and I wasn't having as much as this guy!

PurpleDaisies · 12/07/2018 20:41

Iโ€™ve got this on, a bit behind. I was stunned at the spending. It makes me feel good for lazy freezer meals instead of take aways. Iโ€™m not sure that was the desired egfect

PurpleDaisies · 12/07/2018 20:42

Caffeine withdrawal isnโ€™t dangerous graph, it just doesnโ€™t feel great for a few days.

ellenanora5 · 12/07/2018 20:44

I hope so Graphista

How have they never cooked before?

ellenanora5 · 12/07/2018 20:46

That's an awful lot of spaghetti

jay55 · 12/07/2018 20:48

tipping all that water in on top of the chorizo made me wince, boiled sausage ugh.

ellenanora5 · 12/07/2018 20:53

I've heard of ham and coke but not ginger beer

Looks quite nice

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/07/2018 20:54

Are all those kids hers? did she start at 12 Shock

ellenanora5 · 12/07/2018 21:01

12,000 a year they can save, bloody hell that's huge

I know Fluffycloud I was thinking that when yet another son popped up, she looks brilliant.

PurpleDaisies · 12/07/2018 21:05

I love the look of that daal and naan.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/07/2018 21:06

it's a huge saving and the older sons looked really proud to be cooking too.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/07/2018 21:10

Always say needs a family who spend 50/60 and then save

Obv takeaways are costly

The average family doesnโ€™t spend that kind of money

greeneggblueegg · 12/07/2018 21:24

Made me snort when the dad said "but if I was unhealthy surely it would show".

The man looked terrible

Caffeine withdrawal may not yet be recognised as dangerous, but it has a significant effect on the heart.

In addition as a joiner he's likely using power tools, possibly up ladders etc so from that perspective symptoms like dizziness, lack of concentration, nausea & vomiting, muscle cramps could prove dangerous.

Certainly when I was experiencing it, I had palpitations, extreme dizziness and fainted a couple times. Not just a case of 'not feeling great for a few days' it depends of course also on how much you've been consuming.

There seems quite an age spread with the kids, eldest seems early 20's, youngest 7-9? She doesn't look old enough to be mum to eldest!

Greenegg - yea, not only overweight, but also looked tired and possibly anaemic? Didn't look too healthy at all.

I hope the sons and dad continue to do a share of the cooking.

jay55 · 12/07/2018 22:20

I think the sons were just surprised they could have a decent steak meal for less than their takeaways and will probably live on it now.

pennycarbonara · 13/07/2018 09:33

The amount of money may have been vast but this was the first time I recognised the patterns from people I knew - all the takeaways (especially with adult children still living with parents), and people who drink mindboggling amounts of cola through the working day. So it was really interesting to see how they approached it. (The other sort of food high spenders I'd recognise most would be Waitrose ready meals, Dorset Cereals etc. The people who just buy middle of the road branded everything are a bit of a mystery to me IRL.)

I sometimes don't like the interludes but actually found it fascinating to see how the vinegar was made. And the people were really enthusiastic about it. My favourite episode of all series!

Re the spacing of kids, it just looks like the mum probably had a surprise late kid when she thought she'd finished having children years earlier. She's made a very good choice of haircut - if she hadn't I don't think people would be saying things like "did she start when she was 12", as she just seems like someone of 45ish or more who's looked after herself well without actually doing botox etc.

mydogisthebest · 13/07/2018 11:54

I know there are 4 wage earners in the family but ยฃ400 a week!! Where do they find these families?

It just amazes me that so many families don't have a clue how much they spend on food. Ok if you are a millionaire but none of them are. think of what you could spend all that wasted money on.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/07/2018 08:07

Obv they always use rich families

To even be able to afford to spend 400 a week on food

The steak sarnie looked nice

As did the chorizo pasta

JustDanceAddict · 14/07/2018 08:26

It was a 4-income family so a decent amount will be coming in.
I love watching it cos Iโ€™m
Nosey but it pees me off when they say โ€˜use sugar freeโ€™ as itโ€™s usually full of sweeteners. No, use plain yoghurt with fruit! Or lower fat without the added extra sugar. But itโ€™s not a nutrition prog, itโ€™s a save money prog!
The amount of cola was astonishing. I prob drink a couple of diet cokes a month ๐Ÿ˜†

I am kicking myself for not watching this programme from the beginning - it is pretty compulsive viewing. It is just so funny, the way they state the obvious, as previous posters have said.

I was utterly gobsmacked when it turned out that one of the sons in last weekโ€™s episode actually worked in catering - but couldnโ€™t/wouldnโ€™t cook at home!

BarbaraofSevillle · 19/07/2018 18:39

It's OK SDTG it's very repetitive. Keep on with this series and you get the jist.

The only change I can see this series is that they've changed the voice-over. It user to be Liza Tarbuck.

I think not cooking by cheffy types is common, probably because they work long hours and don't want to cook outside work. My little brother is quite a talented chef who works in fancy hotels. Outside work he lives on takeaway pizza and kebabs. The most complicated thing he has cooked for himself recently is a bacon sandwich.
