Hope this is a new series

i never get why they act all surprised to see the presenters. they must have given them a key.

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/10/2018 21:27

We buy ready mash ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Waits to be shouted at

Graphista · 16/10/2018 22:27

Grabem - scots are similar. I'm veggie but notice that meat eating scots tend to buy from butcher rather than supermarket. Very small town here but FIVE butchers and always busy! And like the one in the show they each do their own pies etc

And I can't even imagine trying to get my mum to change her brand of butter, just wouldn't happen.

Pissedoffdotcom · 16/10/2018 22:33

We buy frozen mash pellets here ๐Ÿ˜‚ DD is the only one who eats it so it saves us a fortune.

I love this show! Have to wonder how much of it is ramped up tho, some of the spending is ridiculous!

gothefcktosleep · 16/10/2018 22:45

Oh god Iโ€™ve nothing against ready made mash - I buy it myself! Just think itโ€™s easier to make from scratch than chips (which they bought potatoes for) so canโ€™t work out why youโ€™d Make the effort to make home cooked chips if you couldnโ€™t be arsed to do home cooked mash - really confused me!

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/10/2018 10:28

Home cooked chips prob easier.

Peel chop and dump in fryer

Mash - peel chop boil mash

OP posts:
gothefcktosleep · 17/10/2018 10:31

Oh I see, didnโ€™t think of them frying them, I par boil then cook in the oven which is a faff but yummy.

ChessieFL · 17/10/2018 12:16

I donโ€™t even bother peeling for chips! Just wash, chop and stick in oven. I donโ€™t par boil first. So for me chips are much easier than mash.

buggerthebotox · 17/10/2018 12:48

I agree chips are easy if in the oven.

I enjoyed this episode better - I had the feeling the other was genuinely busy with work and two very young children.

The recipes always boil my pee a bit - too much chopping and prepping. Who wants to do that after a hard day at school?

I think the main problem with this family was portion sizes though - they were HUGE!

They'd have probably saved money by just cutting portion sizes in half.

I think this show is as much about Gregg and the other bloke showing off their own cooking skills. Too "cheffy" for my liking.

Tonightโ€™s family a fitness instructor mum wants dad to eat more healthily

Egg whites with sweet potato Confused

Again very disjointed set up. I'm veggie, dd isn't but don't find it too hard to make if not completely the same meal then only one component different. And not hard to then serve more or less same meal.

Eg if doing stir fry do the veg/spices sauce (most of) for both of us in one pan, cook some chicken in another for dd with a little of the sauce maybe quorn for me in another. Then serve both plates up with the carb, also cooked in one pan, then the veg/spices/sauce, then the protein.,easier than it sounds promise.

Madbengalmum · 18/10/2018 20:15

Jeeesus egg whites filled with sweet potato for tea...๐Ÿคข๐Ÿคข

JurassicAdventure · 19/10/2018 16:47

She came across really controlling, I'm not sure how on board with the "no carbs in the evening" thing he was.

cakeforone · 19/10/2018 17:33

I agree - seems like food and health was quite a big focus in their house, instigated by the mum and the others had to fall in line.

I like healthy food but egg whites stuffed with sweet potato just doesn't appeal at all ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

gingercat02 · 19/10/2018 18:53

I'm just watching now. When he said egg white and sweet potato I assumed he meant something like an egg white omlette with sweet potato. Still ๐Ÿคฎ but not as bad as described ^

BakedBeans47 · 19/10/2018 18:56

The woman on it last night was bloody awful. Who in their right mind would eat egg whites filled with sweet potato? And the dinner of quorn sausage and broccoli looked shite as well. No wonder the poor bastard filled up on illicit burgers when he got away from her clutches.

GrabEmByThePatriarchy · 20/10/2018 07:41

The plain, dry quorn and broccoli looked very depressing. I hope that was all for the camera and they don't really eat that. I mean, how hard is it to make some gravy? Bisto is veggie, isn't it?

LostInShoebiz · 20/10/2018 11:17

DH2 tried to introduce an EWFL type experiment and it backfires totally because we now spend three times as much in fancy ketchup and havenโ€™t swapped anything else (mostly as his insistence that nothing but the brands of his childhood can pass his lips). We would definitely make Gregg angry.

Firstbornunicorn · 20/10/2018 11:45

@LostInShoebiz my DH has long since insisted that only Heinz ketchup is acceptable. I'd been filling a Heinz bottle with Tesco brand ketchup for months before he realised. And that was only because I couldn't stop giggling during a Heinz-only rant.

LostInShoebiz · 20/10/2018 11:58

We were a Heinz only household until Tiptree ketchup came into our lives. The stuff is like tomatoey crack b

Sorry, pressed post too soon. Or he could have done some of the cooking himself? Four capable people in the house and only the woman ever cooks. No wonder she'd lost interest.

Most shocking thing in this one was that the sons didn't realise they were using some sort of veggie mince when they made the bolognese sauce. How do they get to near adulthood without knowing what fresh meat mince looks like?

GrabEmByThePatriarchy · 21/10/2018 11:30

There's also often nothing much but unhealthy food available to people who are having breaks whilst driving. It's an issue for those driving long distances for a living, I've seen it discussed before.

www.express.co.uk/life-style/cars/698006/fry-ups-truckers-lorry-drivers-healthy-food

In a service station there's probably at least a couple of limp salads available, but if you've been driving since 4am frankly I can see how that's not going to appeal. In smaller roadside cafes/food vans, not even that.

BarbaraofSevillle · 21/10/2018 11:39

It's a lot better than it used to be. Marks and Spencer and Subway are everywhere these days and McDs and Greggs do healthy options.

But it is a struggle. I find hot food much more appetising than cold, so finding something hot and healthy is a struggle, especially when it also needs to be quick. My best choice is a carvery with lots of meat and veg and tiny bit or no roast potato, stuffing, Yorkshire Pud etc.

GrabEmByThePatriarchy · 21/10/2018 11:56

Yeah it is, I'm not sure I'd count Greggs or Subway healthier options as particularly appetising either! I'm just the same as you with hot food too, or at least out and about. Love a salad, but the way I do them.

Plus, this is service station fayre. Roadside cafes run out of someone's van, for example, sometimes it's fried bacon, fried sausage or fried egg are your choices. I guess in that situation the fried egg butty is the healthy choice?!
