Just seen this is back. Anyone else watching?

OP posts:
Loopytiles · 22/06/2018 23:47

Kudos to the actor playing stanley, he was so benign and then so terrifying! All the actors playing synths are good.

Laura and family could do to move house!

Loopytiles · 22/06/2018 23:49

I think I would have chosen the old man to die because the synth is conscious and hasn’t been so for long, so has had less time in his life.

I wouldn’t sacrifice myself for a stranger! Especially not in front of my family.

DashOfMagic · 22/06/2018 23:49

Omg maybe it’s just because I know the actor IS a child Shock

Dash are you getting a bit too into this!!

No I’m not! Now if you’ll excuse me I’m off to write a strongly worded letter to parliament to petition against basswood Grin

Ps - yeah Leo is well meh

Italiangreyhound · 23/06/2018 01:53

@Loopytiles each to their own but that is a seriously scary perspective to me! To pick a machine over a person!

That is ultimately why (IMHO) the humans are stuffed if they don't get rid of all the synths. Green eyes, orange eyes, what difference. If the machines looked like a coffee processor then no one would be fighting for their rights. It is because they look and sound human. But they are not.

Its actually philosophically very interesting I think. The idea there is some real debate about whether a machine is actually the same as a human is quite scary. I thought the programme would make people aware of the dangers of robots but it may well do the reverse and make people want them.

(I am quite nervous we will get to this kind of scenario but probably not for another 50 years so I will be long gone!)

Italiangreyhound · 23/06/2018 01:56

What is consciousness if it is manufactured. It's a programme. There was some stuff about this in Star trek with Data en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_(Star_Trek) but he did actually look quite non-human!

Plus I knew the Anatole wasn't actually going to kill anyone so it would have been a relatively safe bet!

"DashOfMagic yes indeed what the F is Basewood!

Did anyone see the sex robots programme? I actually felt sorry for one of the robots, and the idiot old man's wife!

Plus did anyone see documentary? www.radiotimes.com/news/2016-10-08/scientists-have-built-a-real-life-gemma-chan-robot-for-a-new-channel-4-ai-documentary/

Must go to bed, will leave you with this

Loopytiles · 23/06/2018 06:46

The synths aren’t human, no, but IMO they’re not machines either. The conscious ones are alive, just as different beings.

Italiangreyhound · 23/06/2018 09:20

What does it mean to be alive?

Loopytiles · 23/06/2018 09:52

Deep stuff eh!

Most humans think and act as though animals’ lives are less important, because we eat some, are (unless in animals’ own habitat) more powerful and we think we are more intelligent.

Synths in the show are more intelligent, stronger etc but have “achilles heels”, eg they need scarce things - parts and power - much like humans need water, food etc. Imagine both synths and humans can only withstand certain environments, eg water, temperatures.

Crinkle77 · 23/06/2018 11:36

I would have chosen to save sam hands down. I have to say dino fetscher that plays Stanley is super hot in real life.

MissCalamity · 23/06/2018 18:01

I think Stanley looks a bit like Ryan Reynolds Shock
I am loving this programme, trying not to think too much about the logistics & all that!

noblegiraffe · 23/06/2018 18:10

Sam is brilliant, such good acting from a child.

Crinkle77 · 23/06/2018 19:30

He is great noble isn't he. I just find it off that Laura didn't choose him after everything that everything her and her family have been through. I know Sam is essentially a machine but how could she not fall in love with him. Plus the old guy will be dead in a few years anyway. He has lived his life. Sam had years ahead of him. I agree with another poster who said Joe would have chosen to save sam.

Crinkle77 · 23/06/2018 19:31

Sorry meant to say I found it odd not off.

noblegiraffe · 23/06/2018 19:56

When she was choosing between the two, the old guy was begging her and looking really distraught. Sam looked totally neutral and uncaring. That would swing your vote surely?

Laura had no idea that he wouldn’t kill either of them - the bomb had just gone off killing 20, and Laura knew that Stanley was supposed to kill her family or the Commission.

Crinkle77 · 23/06/2018 20:12

That is true noble but in the other hand she has had time to get to know Sam and develop feelings for him. Saying that it was Joe who seemed to be more taken with him. Laura didn't seem to show that much interest. She was always going out to work.

Brightermornings · 23/06/2018 20:22

What was behind the shrine?? I've rewinded but still couldn't make it out. I love humans!!

Italiangreyhound · 23/06/2018 20:36

Crinkle77 agree Stanley is super hot. But not sure how you could choose a machine over a human!

'Plus the old guy will be dead in a few years anyway.' Very scary thinking. Does the NHS operate on this system? We'll all be dead someday!

IMHO Joe would not have chosen to save Sam, he moved to a place with no synths because he didn't like them!

'Laura had no idea that he wouldn’t kill either of them' that is true but she is super smart. If I realised it was a test she would have too. Stanley would have protected her.

The kid 're.ones me of David from AI. AI was the most boring and depressing films I've ever seen!

Italiangreyhound · 23/06/2018 20:38

reminds

purpleme12 · 23/06/2018 20:42

But then panic makes you not see the logic doesn't it so she wouldn't necessarily have seen that it's just a test and he wouldn't have killed her

noblegiraffe · 23/06/2018 20:57

It obviously was a test, Anatole said it was to prove that she would pick a human over a synth. That doen’t mean he wasn’t prepared to go through with it. Anatole is effectively the head of a terrorist organisation.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 23/06/2018 20:57

I'd have saved Sam too - he has consciousness and emotions. You can't strip it down and say he is just a machine - what makes people (who are mostly water) more than the sum of our parts? It's our consciousness and emotions.
I think Laura chose as she did because it supports the view that people will align themselves with their own kind, when push comes to shove and therefore there can't be an equal society between synths and humans.
I am enjoying this but there are some plot holes. No one would be dumb enough to keep incriminating evidence on their laptop and leave it with a very convenient new friend. Niska's storyline feels weak - like it has come out of nowhere. Leo is boring, as is Matty. The synths would not be so trusting as to tell the comm8ssion that they are developing the means to be self sufficient and 'read' humans better - that would be like signing their own death warrants.
Laura's relationship with the scientist will go tits up when it emerges that matty released the code and is therefore responsible for what happened to his baby.

Italiangreyhound · 23/06/2018 20:58

Yes very true, been a long time since I was held hostage by synths!

Italiangreyhound · 23/06/2018 21:03

That was to @purpleme12

@IWannaSeeHowItEnds 'You can't strip it down and say he is just a machine - what makes people (who are mostly water) more than the sum of our parts? It's our consciousness and emotions.'

My husband is not a very emotional man. is he any less human?

Is a person who is unconscious less human?

But yes to the plot holes. Loads!

The commission would have bombed the place as soon as they heard the phrase 'independent power source'.

Italiangreyhound · 23/06/2018 21:06

The relationship with Laura and silver Fox seems a bit weird.

Anyone else see bicentennial man? Covered some of these themes.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 23/06/2018 21:24

Italian, your dh may not be particularly demonstrative, when is comes to his emotions but presumably he has them?
