Anybody else watching it? I really want to like it but I am really not feeling it.

OP posts:

Meera Syal is acting everyone else off the screen. I’ve only ever seen her do comedy before this.

How bloody stupid was her scene with Stephen Tompkinson and her mentioning his eye bag removal when we only (deliberately) saw one side of his face in his close-up and the bag under his right eye was still visible but just had some make up on it to look a bit less obvious Hmm

Clawdy · 02/05/2018 17:12

I did think when she said she only drank two or three glasses of wine every night, that was actually quite a lot.......

The80sweregreat · 02/05/2018 17:24

She still loves those eye bags doesn’t she?
She is very good - I couldn’t help thinking though ‘ don’t drink it - sell them!’ I bet a few rare ones might be worth a fortune to a collector.

southeastdweller · 02/05/2018 17:35

Yes 80’s I know what you mean about the wine but I guess being suddenly dumped after forty years she’s not thinking straight?

Really hope she takes him for everything she can! I was also wondering what percentage of the settlement Nicola Walker would get (can’t recall her character’s name). Or do solicitors charge per hour?

The80sweregreat · 02/05/2018 17:46

Lawyers charge by the hour I think.
(Not sure tho) they charge a lot.
My friend has had a ‘normal ‘divorce ( not mega rich and normal solicitor but house involved ) but they went to court dragged on etc etc. That all came to 18 k or something!
Scary. It’s the game to get into! ( if your clever enough)

The80sweregreat · 02/05/2018 18:33

How I wished it was meera’s character that was the billionaire and having face lifts and him in the cellar drinking the posh wine. Not a man hater but it would be a bit of a spin on the woman scorned!

MissEliza · 02/05/2018 18:37

Mind you the way alcohol is consumed on most tv dramas, two or three glasses is normal! Nina had a couple of glasses of champagne at the dress shop, a couple more with her dad and two martinis at the bar. How many units is that?!

The80sweregreat · 02/05/2018 18:46

They all knock it back in any drama or soap - it’s seen as normal. You rarely watch anything that doesn’t involve alcohol!

Willow2017 · 02/05/2018 18:56

After last nights episode i cant help but think they are all stereotypes.
All the women are smart and either 'strong' or 'ditsy' and all the men are selfish, self obsessed picks.

Hannahs husband is employed by her boss to do some specialised work - neither her boss, her 'friendly blonde stalker' never mind her actual husband even tell her she has to find out by walking in on him. Doesnt she ever talk to her husband at home?

She is upset, angry, emotionally freaked out by meeting her dad and her husband switches off the light and rolls over in bed and ignores it all.

The footballer cant do anything without a retinue of hangers on and cant stand up for his fiance. (And cant keep it in his pants anyway)

The 'blonde bombshell' cant decide between pawing his wife, still pursuing Hannah or trying to shag her sister.

The dad runs off with someone half his age. Only comes back cos he wants money and is prepared to trick his daughters into getting it.

'Davey' is a prize shit even bigger cliche than the rest.

Mother is bitch who built her empire despite all those bastard men, with a heart only for her daughters (and only when it suits her)

Hannah is apparently happily married for 16 yrs yet the first sight of the man who she had a quickie with on eve of her wedding and she is constantly having palpitations and doubting her marriage while simultaneously telling him where to go! And looking constantly in turmoil over it all.

Sister 2 is now apparently a thief!

Sister 3 is sweet and innocent and is marrying the wimp of the century and getting councelled by a minister who doesnt appear to have a clue about them or life. Is way too gushing about her shit dad reappearing. Then she ruins the dress, no doubt a hint at some repressed issues we will find out about next week.

Quite disapointimg really. Some semblance of normality wouldnt have hurt.

The80sweregreat · 02/05/2018 19:47

Hmm, I take your points willow and it's all true but if they were all like me it would only last one ( boring ) episode😃 the man getting married to young Defoe is about the only normal one and that's pushing it.

It's just glossy fluff - nice houses, money, potential affairs, horrible wedding dresses, expensive divorces etc etc. a kind of Ok magazine meets 'pick me up' or 'woman's weekly. ' at least the acting isn't that bad. It s losing viewers though so I doubt we'll see it again after this ends! They will have to go back to Kay Mellor dramas!

ValleyClouds · 02/05/2018 19:50

I saw Meera do Romeo and Juliet.

I'm still really enjoying it, whilst being acutely aware it has nothing on most of Netflix and isn't a patch on "proper" Brit drama like Happy Valley

It's miles better than Dr Foster though which is a glorified soap.

CountFosco · 02/05/2018 19:54

I never get the point of wine cellars though. Why not just drink it?!

You buy the wine when it's en primeur (ie. not yet bottled so cheaper), once it's bottled you get your cases but they still need to be stored for a few years before it's ready to drink. You buy by the case so you have multiple bottles of the same wine and you'd drink those bottles over several years so you can see how the wine develops.

popcorneveryminute · 02/05/2018 20:00

Was it just me or had Nicola Walker's office changed-in the first episode it was lined with shelves and in the second episode she was in an office with floor to ceiling windows?

CountFosco · 02/05/2018 20:04

Yes, she got her corner office.

The80sweregreat · 02/05/2018 20:05

Count, that's interesting as I often wondered why they stored it like that.
Makes sense though.

Happy valley was sublime I agree , but it is nice to watch something that doesn't have a detective in it and ( not being rich myself) it's nice to see how the other half live ( even though it's not true life!) it's certainly not perfect but some escape from the humdrum. It did liven up at the end a bit.,

popcorneveryminute · 02/05/2018 20:13

Thanks @CountFosco. I knew something wasn't quite right but it took me a minute to realise it was the lack of extensive shelving!

The80sweregreat · 02/05/2018 20:18

Thing is, you would need blinds at the windows in the summer. Wouldn't do for me at all that office!

Purplemond · 02/05/2018 20:29

i will keep watching it although its not amazing or gripping i want to know the back stories but i dont fully concentrate when watching so don't fully follow
when they were in the bathroom at the posh hotel, what did Nina say about therapy ?
I assumed the Dutch guy had worked at the company for a few years and hadn't been divorced long so surely not a massive surprise for his ex to see him
I cant warm to either parents, when the Mum pronounced Oscar she seemed to drag it out for ages like it had a billion rs at the end

MissEliza · 02/05/2018 21:59

Fosco you are sooo much more classy than me. I just tend to buy whatever is on special at Waitrose and drink it right away. Well that night not as soon as I get in!

Willow2017 · 02/05/2018 22:38

The80s
Ha ha me too but i just wish it wasnt so polarised. Men are all cocky, users and women are all strong and fighting them all the way.
But will keep watching it to see what happens it might pick up (and to watch perv overAH😉)

Optimist1 · 02/05/2018 23:40

Wasn't giving it my full attention - what did Nina steal, please?

The80sweregreat · 03/05/2018 07:44

I also missed Nina stealing something?

she overheard her dad saying about wanting some of the business and having to get them to sign some documents- probably young sister wont mind too much but Hannah and Nina won't do this, unless Hannah gets so fed up with her mum she does it out of spite!

Willow2017 · 03/05/2018 08:14

She picked up a blue/green stone necklace in the bridal shop and carried it through to where they were sitting in a closed fist. You never seen her put it down anywhere.

Dulra · 03/05/2018 08:20

Optimist1 The80sweregreat she nicked a garter from the Bridal shop Grin

CountFosco never knew that. I love the idea of a wine cellar but wouldn't trust myself with all that wine at easy reach!!

Willow2017 · 03/05/2018 08:28

Oh maybe it was a garter it was greenish anyway. Bit blink and you miss it😀
