Anybody else watching it? I really want to like it but I am really not feeling it.

OP posts:
Greengagesummer · 18/05/2018 12:13

To the PPs who have commented about the origin/ethnicity -

I agree about the ethnicity vs character names. Christie Carmichael, James Cutler, Zander ? are all pretty English names. Where I feel the issue could be is NOT adapting some of the cast names.

For James & his family, he is clearly South Indian to look at; could be Keralan so decent chance of being Christian, especially wirh church wedding & praying, so I am happy to go with that.
But a script refererencing a Dutch man, choosing a Dutch actor & giving him an extremely English name is slightly odd.

Overall, the thing that I am pleased about is the colourblindness of the casting. It's about time that families/workplaces were rainbow hued in the media and that Asian actors stopped being cast only as doctors/shopkeepers/terrorists & Afrocarribbean actors as rappers/nurses/criminals.

It's the most clichéd load of nonsense I've seen for a while and yet it's so compulsively watchable

This! It's so silly but I still want to know what happens.

I'm finding Hannah and Nathan's marriage quite depressingly realistic though.

mydogisthebest · 18/05/2018 13:05

Nathan may be telling the truth that he only looked at the dating website and nothing more. Hannah though slept with her boss the night before she married Nathan so quite why she thinks she has the moral high ground I don't know

QueenOfTheAndals · 18/05/2018 14:26

Is Christie Hannah's boss? I thought he's a colleague, one who admittedly doesn't do much beyond lurking in doorways. Xander seems to be the one in charge.

But how did Hannah and Nathan know Christie from before? University chums? She's only recently left Defoe's.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 18/05/2018 16:36

Hannah & Christie were flatmates. Presumably at University

Jux · 18/05/2018 17:31

Is it actually certain that Hannah slept with Christie, or could it have been something else that they did the night before her wedding? Hevy petting? Pranking an old lady in the flat downstairs? Planting evidence somewhere unfindable? Losing a body? Grin

superzoomer · 18/05/2018 17:35

No he's stated that it's that they slept together.

BurningTheToast · 19/05/2018 08:38

But is it as bad that Hannah slept with Christie the night before her wedding and Nathan looked at the dating website (although 'just looked' - he would say that wouldn't he?)?

Hannah said that she and Christie had drunk a lot that night and people do make mistakes etc but for the thick end of 20 years she's been committed to Nathan, faithful to him (as far as we know), raised three children with him. Conversely, they're having problems, common to a lot of long-term relationships where you don't have as much time for each other as you'd like, and Nathan's joining a website whose premise is to put people who want to have affairs in touch with each other.

I think she still has the moral high ground, relatively speaking.

mydogisthebest · 19/05/2018 10:00

Oh the old excuse that they were drunk, people make mistakes blah blah. She was totally and utterly unfaithful. She had sex with another man.

If Nathan did only look at the site then, of course, he is in the wrong but no way near as badly as she is

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/05/2018 11:09

But coupled with groping her sister and trying to snog her, it doesn't look good at all.

GnotherGnu · 22/05/2018 00:23

I think Hannah, Christie & Hannah's husband were at law school or Uni together as there was a reference to something being like being back at moot court. Of course, Hannah's husband, as a barrister, will have had a different training route to the others as solicitors but I will forgive the producer for overlooking that

They could well have done their law degrees at the same university before they respectively went off on different routes to do the Bar/Law Society exams. When I was at university every law student had to do a moot.

Maybe Hannah will go back to Defoes when she splits up from Christy & take her client Goldie Mackenzie with her and the billings will boost Dafoes coffers.

She couldn't, there'd be a straight conflict of interest given that Defoe's acts for her husband.

VanGoghsDog · 22/05/2018 01:22

What scar, on whom?

foxyliz26 · 22/05/2018 01:31

I am glad I don't work for the same firm of solicitors, I have such a crush on Nicola Walker

programme is crap ,she is superb !

its ok I am gay and my girlfriend fancies her too, and a few of our straight female friends

hopefully she will be back in the check shirts and tousled hair in last Tango in Halifax when that returns

NevermindMyMind · 22/05/2018 01:48

It's so...predictable and saccharine and, yet, I can't stop watching. I'd say it's quite close to how I felt about The Good Wife (I loved it in the end).

Greengagesummer I keep thinking Christie should have been called Zander and vice versa.

It's not right she slept with someone else but they were young, not yet married and drunk. She's definitely been in the wrong but I feel as though that boat has now sailed if there's 20+ years of marriage as a pp said. She's stuck by a man who has shown himself to be a doting father and husband for all of those years, when on at least two occasions (let's not forget being handsy with her sister), he was not the husband he made out he was. I was expecting her to really lose her shit because they're going through a rough patch, weathering the storm, she's had temptation but kept away and he has thought the grass has been greener. I thought her reaction was quite mild, considering. I expect she will sleep with Christie as a result when she hasn't got another shoulder to cry on about this though.

JeanSeberg · 22/05/2018 06:18

Anyone else think "Lynne these are sex people" and "Dan! Dan! Dan! Dan! Dan! Dan! Dan!" whenever they see Stephen Mangan?

GnotherGnu · 22/05/2018 16:14

Van Gogh, Anthony Head (can't remember his name in the series) had a scar showing at his neckline - I thought it was from something like a tracheostomy but, thinking about it, the suggestion upthread that it is from chest surgery is more likely.

DaffoDeffo · 22/05/2018 18:21

looking forward to tonight's episode. How many more are left in the series, does anyone know?

southeastdweller · 22/05/2018 18:25

Two more including tonight’s.

DaffoDeffo · 22/05/2018 21:29

I tell you, had one of my sisters done that at a dinner party, I wouldn't be all chummy the next day!

VanGoghsDog · 22/05/2018 21:31

Why would people sign up to those sites in their own names?

QueenOfTheAndals · 22/05/2018 21:59

Right, she has to leave Nathan now!

Middleoftheroad · 22/05/2018 22:04

And live up to its title...

Willow2017 · 22/05/2018 22:15

Oh the utterly selfish stupid man! Then trying to blame his wife!

Is there one man in this that isnt a selfish ignorant needy bastard?

HildaZelda · 22/05/2018 22:25

@foxyliz26, understandable. I'm straight and completely fancy the arse off Nicola Walker.
DH can't understand it as he fancies Nina.

B00dyM4ry · 22/05/2018 22:28

It was dull tonight...
