Anybody else watching it? I really want to like it but I am really not feeling it.

OP posts:
DoryNow · 09/05/2018 14:11

I'm thoroughly enjoying it all, doesn't need to be over-analysed does it?Grin

The showdown with bitch mother was very moving.
30 years of thinking the worst of a dad you had adored, (Hannah & Nina) or dreamt about having in your life ( Rose) & then finding he had tried, and your mother you thought of as the ferociously protective single mum & kick ass lawyer had lied to you all.....

Serial123 · 09/05/2018 14:21

Lady a series. Also with stellan skarsgaard (sp?).

QueenOfTheAndals · 09/05/2018 14:25

Abi Morgan wrote The Hour, which was excellent. It's a shame it only ran to 2 seasons.

ConferenceBores · 09/05/2018 17:05

I’m holding out hope that there’s another twist and we find out the DM had good reason - you’d hope there are plot layers...surely someone as clever as the elder matriarch wouldn’t without presents out of spite when it obviously punishes the children?

HasAnyoneGotAProblemWithThat · 09/05/2018 17:37

Didn’t understand why the mum kept all the presents & cards. I’d have thought she would have got rid of it.

SM - didn’t get why you’d kiss your wife’s sister. Just showed himself to be a sleazeball.

Christie- getting on my nerves. Don’t like him. He’s creepy.

Davey & OW - what sort of level of shits do you have to be to ask your wife to be godson to your child!

Conflicts of interest galore here! Just so unrealistic.

ConferenceBores · 09/05/2018 17:40

I’ve had a slow day today hence the too much tv related thought - yeah, has why on earth would you keep all the presents rather than throw them? Surely a lawyer we’re given to believe is a tiger wouldn’t have kept the evidence!

Purplemond · 09/05/2018 19:31

VanGoghsDog thats a similar storyline to NW character in Last tango
I still am enjoying it but think they try to cram too much with the additional storylines which seem to just last a week

VanGoghsDog · 09/05/2018 19:49

I lost track with Last Tango, it got too confusing and went on too long, I lost the will to live.

MissEliza · 09/05/2018 21:22

I hope they have plans for a second series. I like the cast and the characters they play.
My only criticism of last night's episode is I didn't understand the storyline with the embryo lady. Or rather I didn't really understand the outcome. It was a bit rushed IMHO.

Clawdy · 09/05/2018 21:44

Tonight's was a more interesting watch, but I agree the discovery of the years of cards and gifts was a bit clichéd. Very unlikely she would have kept them all too.But I can't stand the mother, she has the most annoying face! So I'm happy to see the daughters turn against her.....

phlebasconsidered · 09/05/2018 22:04

I was really struck by the last episode, mainly because I found out my mum had over a decades worth of cards and letters stored from my dad. She passed the presents on to charities. Way back in the 70s and early 80s it was easy for dad's to be lost.

When I eventually met with my dad it transpired he had sent stuff for 18 years. With no reply. My mum had been sending it on to his sister. She kept it all. When I found her and my dad via a family search it wasn't pretty! It's a huge can of worms.

And in tv land, why the bloody hell isn't she sleeping with Mangan?

ValleyClouds · 09/05/2018 22:19

Last Tango was amazing til that last series with the ghost.

Load of old shit.

IRefuseToAgree · 09/05/2018 22:20

Phleb

That's so funny that you posted
that as I was scoffing at how
unbelievable that bit was I the show. I said to my DH how ridiculous it was to think anyone would keep a stash of letters like that and not just throw them away ... shows what I know 😂

Sorry that it happened to you. It must have been shocking

MissEliza · 09/05/2018 22:35

Oh I'm sure they'll be a twist to vindicate the mother!

Middleoftheroad · 09/05/2018 22:42

Ok - I find the main couple's domestic life frustrating.

Nain character and DH seem to get back from work in super smart gear whenever they fancy, rock up to their kids with no: bags to pack, homework to check, child illnesses, cat puke to clean, no lunches to make, no dinners to cook, no pots to wash, no child bathtimes, no family admin to sort and have unlimited time for boozing and schmoozing, sexting and Nerf Gun wars (trust me, surely most parents find those frigging plastic bullets as annoying as hell and not hilarious cape inducing fun).

It's just like my frenetic life.....not! My husband is equally stressed and knackered as me when we come in to endless chores and collapse in front of the TV at 9. My DH has never worn a comedy French moustache or ever cooked a meal that didn't come out of a tin.
I live a dull and sheltered life clearly.Grin

Christie is creepy

Rose's boyfriend's constant sniffle is OTT. Nearly copping off with vicar is OTT

I didn't understand the embryo story either

Goldie's DH and best friend are - excuse the pun - shameless. Looking forward to the big showdown. Mother vs daughter and wife vs husband in court. I do find the Goldie story heart wrenching and Meera Syal is always superb. I had the pleasure of interviewing her once as she's from near my home patch. She lived up to all my expectations Smile

VanGoghsDog · 10/05/2018 00:31

What I didn't get about the French meal was why she had to wear a moustache.

BeaLola · 10/05/2018 00:31

Serial123 re casting of Christie - I didn't see the credits but could it be because he is not UK actor but Dutch (I think) ?

I think I would rather be kissing Anthony Head than Christie, or Stephen Mangan.

This is the first Abi Morgan I have seen and am surprised based on her reputation - perhaps it paid too well ?

BeaLola · 10/05/2018 00:39

Re keeping all the letters etc - perhaps not handing them over was ok in the Mothers mind but destroying them would be a step too far ? I'm surprised though they were at the bottom of the wardrobe - I would have thought the attic - and I know this is being picky but 1 suitcase fir letters and gifts to 3 children ?

I know I'm overthinking this ! I still think the embryo storyline was not developed enough/ properly. There must be existing law around this issue ? I guess having had IVF and consented to freezing embryos I'm a bit logged into that storyline - I still don't see understand either why Steven Tompinkson didn't leave his wife for her best friend and son before now ?

MissEliza · 10/05/2018 07:47

The best friend's husband recently died of cancer so I'm guessing that was the catalyst.

Dozer · 10/05/2018 08:11

Very sorry that happened to you phlebas.

Sending a gift and card twice a year isn’t much effort at contact, but very wrong to withhold them.

The father played by anthony head is really manipulative. Nathan shouldn’t have let him in the door.

This episode was weak, especially nathan making a pass at nina. their back history with christie, stale marriage and family hassle is plenty storyline without nathan doing something so sleazy.

The boss at hannah’s firm was out of order subtly threatening her, when essentially christie has been harassing her.

YY to Hannah’s conflict of interest with her share in the family firm.

ConferenceBores · 10/05/2018 08:38

Yeah the embryo story seemed to be that the husband made a legally unenforceable offer to give the embryo assets to the wife for a bigger share of the financial assets than he would otherwise get, but the lawyers said that embryos were not assets so the premise was legally unenforceable at the point of the financial settlement.

There must be other laws in that area...but it seemed that it couldn’t be legally decided at that point.

Serial123 · 10/05/2018 09:30

Ah that makes sense re the casting Bea.

MissEliza · 10/05/2018 09:46

I don't think Nathan is a sleazeball as such. In his defence, his wife doesn't want to have sex with him and has basically admitted she regrets getting tied down so young.

Dozer · 10/05/2018 09:58

Nathan does have every reason to be pissed off, but not an excuse to crack onto SiL! Would be a better story IMO if he didn’t do stuff like that and either confronted Hannah about her emotional affair and behaviour, or just felt like shit and got on with parenting while worrying, as many spouses probably do.

Also, he tried to intiate sex five mins after rowing about their daughter’s new sex life - inappropriate!

They must have invisible childcare and home help Smile

Peartree17 · 10/05/2018 10:02

Middle - I have (very few, tiny number of) friends with those kinds of jobs, those kinds of clothes, that kind of house and kids. They DO rock up at all hours and the reason they can do so is: live in nanny who also does a lot of household admin, cleaner, gardener, tutors for homework stuff. They work huge long hours, travel a lot for work, have to pull all-nighters if something has gone wrong in the US offices and push on through the next day. The financial rewards are enormous and they outsource a lot of the family and household grunt work that keeps you and me busy between hometime and bedtime! This being TV land, the paid help isn't shown. Fair enough, we're not interested.

I think the point of the French moustache meal was to show how the lovely husband had energy and commitment in spades to make family life fun AND still wants to shag his wife while earning a good crust. Compare and contrast boring Christie and his dull, polished-concrete-and-Poulsen-lamp bachelor pad. And he's got piggy little eyes and no discernible sense of humour.

Don't they all drink like fish though? Not on a school night, not while other people's lives are riding on being sharp in the mornings!
