Poor Barbara

Barbara's parents are missionaries so probably won't return for the funeral.

Dr Turner is a lot more prominent than he was but I think it reflects the times. Would be good if a female GP joined the practice - this would also reflect the times.

Can't wait for Phyllis' relationship with that police officer. Linda B will act it brilliantly and with humour.

Valerie is dull. Unless she's destined to be a rather peripheral character like Sister W and Timothy, she needs a storyline outside of being others' sounding board.

Sister J needs more to do. Likewise, the Buckles, who are a convincing couple.

I think that a new love interest be written in for Tom quite soon. Trixie will end up with someone smooth and glam I think. The sort of man who will like her intelligence and feistiness, but who will expect her to quit work when she marries. Have they covered the career/wife angle yet on CtM?

2018February · 05/03/2018 17:58

@scrabbler3 I guess Chummy returned to work after she had Freddie?

SadieHH · 05/03/2018 18:22

Um, Shelagh is a working wife and mother...

GottaGetThisDone · 05/03/2018 18:29

Oh My God, I haven't cried like that at a TV program for such a long time

scrabbler3 · 05/03/2018 18:36

I was thinking more of a wife being pushed into giving up work or battling with career v sahp.

God, I'd completely forgotten about Chummy's baby.

Ickyockycocky · 05/03/2018 18:53

I switched myself off a bit from watching last night. I've found the programme increasingly depressing. I know horrible things happen but I wish they could find a better balance. Too much misery isn't great viewing.

Kitsandkids · 05/03/2018 19:31

Poor Barbara. I've always thought she's a bit 'wet' though. But I didn't want her to die! I've never found her and Tom's relationship very realistic. He and Trixie had much better chemistry, I thought. Which would make sense I suppose as they got together in real life.

I quite like the Dr, though he and Sheilagh are a bit sickly sweet at times. I really like Timothy. I wonder if they'll give him a storyline with a girlfriend soon?

I had high hopes for Valerie when she came that she was a feisty type of nurse but she seems a bit wet too now. I love Phyllis, and the Buckles. I loved the storyline about Reggie coming and Violet not being able to cope and wanting him gone but by the end she loved him. That was lovely.

I wish Chummy would come back.

Aragog · 05/03/2018 19:46

Margot - this: callthemidwife.wikia.com/wiki/Barbara_Hereward suggests her mum is dead but that she has a living father and sister. Dad is in New Guinea - posted there for a few years, he's in the church too. He wasn't at her wedding either. You'd think he'd come back for the funeral next week though ....

jay55 · 05/03/2018 20:50

I'm sorry but I just couldn't believe that wet Timothy wanted to see The rolling stones.

iklboo · 05/03/2018 21:03

@jay55 - I reckon he's trying to be cool and fit in with the guys at school. Or he's really hiding a personality from us all Grin.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 05/03/2018 21:49

Am pretty sure Barbara's dad was at the wedding, in fact I think he married them!!

squiz81 · 05/03/2018 21:52

This series is really annoying me. There was no need to call her back just to kill her off. The writers are just grief monkeys.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 05/03/2018 21:54

A family friend died of septecimia in 2005, they got soil in a cut when gardening @Elvisola

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 05/03/2018 21:55

Sorry, meant to say the amputating diddnt work, first finger, then hand, then arm.

StripySocksAndDocs · 05/03/2018 22:05

Just caught up. None the better for it. I really liked Barbara- yes she was wet but I love characters that are wet but know they are and ate fine with it.

I noted they found the singing/praying nuns near the end. Wonder if they had been trapped in one of the bedrooms they seem to have forgotten about. Where they'd been trapped by copious volumes of teal for months.

StripySocksAndDocs · 05/03/2018 22:08

It's not a new thing to amputate dead tissue. You get scenes in things set many moons ago where they saw off limbs, usually without any pain relief, for good measure.

SoupDragon · 05/03/2018 22:11

Barbara’s father was definitely at the wedding - they brought the date forward so he could be there.

ChristmasAccountant · 05/03/2018 22:17

Just caught up. Can't stop crying and I'm not a crying person!

theluckiest · 05/03/2018 22:22

Booooooo. I really liked Barbara.

I'm finding Shelagh & Dr Smug more and more irritating and patronising with each passing episode. 'Tim says something cheeky : sideways head-tilt, patronising comment. Shelagh sighs about something difficult: sideways head-tilt, patronising comment that it will all be ok' Aaarghhhh!! Sod off with your patronising, unrealistically calm and head-tilting bollocks...

Has anyone else started noticing teal in their own house yet? I've realised that my kitchen, bedroom and a bit of the bathroom all boast teal...

I wonder if the plan is to get Tom & Trixie back together - he'll have a breakdown & she will be the one to rescue him this time y'see?! I forget why they split up in the first place?

Ickyockycocky · 05/03/2018 22:25

I thought there was really chemistry between Tom and Trixie and so it came to pass.

kungpopanda · 05/03/2018 22:36

This series is the first I have watched, and I very quickly grew to loathe Shelagh. Like on about her third appearance. Please give me good historical reasons to dislike her so it's not just g̶u̶t̶ ̶i̶n̶s̶t̶i̶n̶c̶t̶ irrational prejudice and I can then settle down to properly enjoying hating her.

And Sister MJ - 'Bloody funny nun you are', as a great man once sang.

lou1221 · 05/03/2018 23:05

blubbed my eyes out. not particularly at Babs, more at Phyllis, she's a great actor, loved the bit when she refused to pray.

I'm reading the ctm books, first one where Jenny Lee joins Nonatus House, I. the book SMJ is said to be 90 + years old. This book starts in the early 50's, so are we to believe that SMJ is over 100 now? I know it's possible, but...

OpalTree · 05/03/2018 23:26

I thought Tom and Barbara were a good looking couple and Barbara, Patsy and Trixie looked good together on the front of TV mags!

OpalTree · 05/03/2018 23:30

Perhaps we could have a midwife who's a bit naughty or mean to spice things up

saoirsesoige · 05/03/2018 23:31

It's only based on the books, not exact. I'd say she's meant to be 90 or so about now.
