Seeking your casting suggestions for The Crown, Series 3

OK, so we know Olivia Colman will be the Queen and Helena Bonham Carter is probably going to be Princess Margaret. I think they're both great choices and look forward to seeing them.

Who can we cast in the other roles?

I understand the series is meant to cover the 70s, and it's been suggested that the natural "end" to the series is Thatcher's election. So we probably won't see Diana or Fergie yet, but could see Camilla.

Here is where I'm at in my head right now:

Prince Philip (fair-haired male, mid-40s/mid 50s in age): not my idea but I think Iain Glen is absolutely inspired

Queen Mother (short, dark-haired female, 60s-70s in age): Imelda Staunton, Celia Imrie

Prince Charles (dark-haired male, mid 20s/mid 30s in age): Jonah Hauer-King (he played Laurie in Little Women)

Princess Anne (fair-haired female, mid 20s/mid 30s in age): Emilia Clarke (she'd kick some ass!)

Ted Heath (grey-haired male, mid 50s in age): possibly Samuel West (who, it must be noted, has already played Ted Heath, in a drama about the young Thatcher)

Harold Wilson (grey-haired male, mid 50s in age): for some reason I'm thinking Matthew MacFadyen could be good, though he may be too young

James Callaghan (grey-haired male, late 50s in age): Timothy Spall maybe?

Margaret Thatcher (fair-haired female, 50s in age): Jemma Redgrave, Emily Watson, Samantha Bond (who would be my first choice)

That's all I've got for now, though there must be a way to fit Peter Capaldi in as someone's private secretary. Give me your ideas!

Imelda Staunton has played the Queen Mother before in Cambridge Spies, a series about Philby, Maclean, Burgess & Blunt. Only a few scenes but she was great.

raisedbyguineapigs · 25/01/2018 22:23

Oh no that's a shame. That's going to be a difficult part to cast.

UnicornRainbowColours · 25/01/2018 22:52

Rumour is Micheal sheen is in line for Philip.

southeastdweller · 26/01/2018 08:56

Oh he’d be totally wrong for Philip! Far better to keep him for season 5 when he can do his Tony Blair again.

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 26/01/2018 18:08

I adore Michael Sheen but really? Tall, Aryan and athletic are just three of the words I would never use about him (along with talentless, boring, nasty and fascist). However he is a genius so I guess I can't rule it out. They just need to find someone soon and get filming. I neeeed series 3.

blodynmawr · 27/01/2018 12:10

Have nothing to contribute (love many of these suggestions Smile), and I think the all the casting to date has been spot on, but just wondered if it has been confirmed when Series 3 will be out? Presumably Dec 2018?
It is a miserable wet day here, and tomorrow's forecast is similar, so there may be nothing else to do other than binge watching Series 1 and 2 (again) to feed my craving....

CoolCarrie · 27/01/2018 21:57

I think the actress who plays Nurse Phillis (?) in Call The Midwife would be great as the Queen Mother. I am really not sure about HBC as mags, although she was good as Liz Taylor.

CoolCarrie · 27/01/2018 21:59

Micheal Sheen is good actor, but wrong for Phil the Greek in many ways, too dark, too short and as pp have said better to keep him for another turn as Blair later on.

CoolCarrie · 27/01/2018 22:04

Linda Bassett is her name, and she is 67 so in the right age group.

UnicornRainbowColours · 29/01/2018 13:52

Agree Micheal sheen playing Tony Blair again.

Can’t decide who I want to be Philip.

wowfudge · 29/01/2018 20:05

Could they not just keep Matt Smith? I can't actually think of anyone who would better.

wowfudge · 29/01/2018 20:06

Who'd play Ted Heath do you think?

raisedbyguineapigs · 30/01/2018 15:39

I think now they have cast two of the three main characters they can't get Matt Smith to do it alongside the new cast. i think they should ave kept the original cast for another series then recast for 60-70 then 70-90 as Id have thought it would be easier to age.

mommybunny · 21/02/2018 20:27

Resurrecting this thread in the hope any of you lovely compadres and comadres (is that even a word?) have had any more brilliant ideas.

Now we know Paul Bettany is out as Philip we need the casting directors to look at our list for suggestions!

I wonder who will play Diana when the time comes?

MrsGrindah · 21/02/2018 20:40

I have t heard of a lot of the actors mentioned here but I’d prefer Anna Maxwell thingy as queen rather than Olivia Colman. OC will be too twittery for the Queen. Really bad casting in my opinion. I’m cross about it!
Think they would have been able to age Claire Foy and Matt Smith fir another season.

MrsGrindah · 21/02/2018 20:42

And slightly offf topic but does anyone else think the actress who plays Joan Thursday in Endeavour looks the spit of Duchess of Cambridge?!

southeastdweller · 21/02/2018 21:29

She does. Sara Vickers is her name.

I could see AMM as Elizabeth, but also think Olivia Colman will be excellent.

It would be very strange though to see AMM as Elizabeth and Gillian Anderson as Thatcher, considering they played daughter and mother in Bleak House...

Just seen there's a rumour Phillip could be played by Hugh Laurie.
What age range are they supposed to be in the next series?

NapQueen · 11/03/2018 20:50

40-late fifties?

Dunno what I think about HL tbh but I just cannot imagine anyone doing as well a job as CF and MS have done.

beguilingeyes · 13/03/2018 15:15

Stephen Mackintosh gets my vote for Philip

"Helen McCrory might have been a good alt-Margaret."

I wanted Helen McCrory for the Queen.

CoolCarrie · 14/03/2018 10:07

Hugh Laurie is a terrible choice. He was good as House and Bertie Wooster, but he hasn’t got much depth to his acting imo, and I really cannot see him as Phillip.
