Seeking your casting suggestions for The Crown, Series 3

OK, so we know Olivia Colman will be the Queen and Helena Bonham Carter is probably going to be Princess Margaret. I think they're both great choices and look forward to seeing them.

Who can we cast in the other roles?

I understand the series is meant to cover the 70s, and it's been suggested that the natural "end" to the series is Thatcher's election. So we probably won't see Diana or Fergie yet, but could see Camilla.

Here is where I'm at in my head right now:

Prince Philip (fair-haired male, mid-40s/mid 50s in age): not my idea but I think Iain Glen is absolutely inspired

Queen Mother (short, dark-haired female, 60s-70s in age): Imelda Staunton, Celia Imrie

Prince Charles (dark-haired male, mid 20s/mid 30s in age): Jonah Hauer-King (he played Laurie in Little Women)

Princess Anne (fair-haired female, mid 20s/mid 30s in age): Emilia Clarke (she'd kick some ass!)

Ted Heath (grey-haired male, mid 50s in age): possibly Samuel West (who, it must be noted, has already played Ted Heath, in a drama about the young Thatcher)

Harold Wilson (grey-haired male, mid 50s in age): for some reason I'm thinking Matthew MacFadyen could be good, though he may be too young

James Callaghan (grey-haired male, late 50s in age): Timothy Spall maybe?

Margaret Thatcher (fair-haired female, 50s in age): Jemma Redgrave, Emily Watson, Samantha Bond (who would be my first choice)

That's all I've got for now, though there must be a way to fit Peter Capaldi in as someone's private secretary. Give me your ideas!

How about Christopher Eccleston as Philip?

Oooh, I don’t know! I just remember him as the Duke if Norfolk in Elizabeth and he’s just so, brutal.

He does have the look and build though, and probably the age, so give him a screen test. Let’s say I’m more open to him than Mark Rylance, but Iain Glen is still front runner.

Oh he would be good and the right age. Wonder if the Doctor Who gimmick would still apply, although he doesn't seem so tied to it as Smith and Tennant.

HairsprayBabe · 17/01/2018 08:24

Tom Holland for Young Charles?

He is 21 atm and deff has the ears for it...

Might be a bit tied up being Spiderman though

LadyIsabella yy I think that 'Philip' is probably filming elsewhere just now or has scenes still being broadcast so his current show doesn't want their publicity being overshadowed by any Crown announcement and likewise The Crown don't want their publicity to be caught up with another show.

berryferry · 17/01/2018 14:28

Juliet Stevenson as thatcher?

NapQueen · 17/01/2018 21:37

Maxine Peake for Thatcher?

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 17/01/2018 21:52

I’m just catching up with Feud: Bette and Joan and have realised that the follow up series is going to be Charles vs Diana. To be released end 2018 so they’re going to be casting the same roles as The Crown (albeit ten-twenty years later on).

Apparently Sarandon and Lange are going to have roles in the new series which brings to mind the possibility of them fighting each other to be death for who gets to be The Queen in a somewhat meta way.

Andylion · 18/01/2018 01:33

Oooo, Maxine Peake? That’s an interesting idea.

NapQueen · 18/01/2018 14:25

Penelope Keith for QM?

mommybunny · 18/01/2018 17:46

I had been trying to come up with ways we could deploy Tom Hollander, but someone else clearly has a better idea for him:

Daniel Radcliffe could be P.Charles but he is so synonymous with hp.

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 18/01/2018 18:44

Daniel Radcliffe would be fun casting. But he’s so short.

DM this morning, Paul Bettanys people are "in talks".

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/01/2018 08:48

Given how often the DM lift threads from here, I wouldn't be surprised if they've been reading this and decided to make a story out of it!

southeastdweller · 19/01/2018 08:57

Baz Bamigboye is always great for scoops and reliable I should know as I've been reading the DM for years

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/01/2018 09:08

Actually good point - Baz is usually on the money.

I try to avoid Mail Online but am always on their showbiz pages after the Oscars and other awards shows as they always have the best photos of the frocks!

kittensarecute · 19/01/2018 09:52

Miranda Richardson for Thatcher, maybe?

southeastdweller · 19/01/2018 10:44

She’d be great. Lia Williams would have made a good Thatcher but she’s obviously out if the running now.

mommybunny · 19/01/2018 15:26

I’d heard Paul Bettany was being considered- didn’t know how seriously till the DM article. I still think Iain Glen is the best choice, but I wouldn’t refuse to watch series 3 and 4 if Paul Bettany got the role.

What is the protocol if your thread gets picked up by the DM? I know that high dudgeon is required to be shown, but is a secret thrill acceptable?

(Not that I think the DM wrote their story based on my thread, you understand - I just need to know for future reference...)

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 19/01/2018 15:33

Bettany was on the Radio Times and Newsweek lists I think so that’s where he would have come from. I think he seems plausible because it would be a good move for him - I’m sure marvel pays very well but it doesn’t get him face recognition and presumably it’s a easy job for him to work around for scheduling purposes.

OlennasWimple · 19/01/2018 15:45

Miranda Richardson or Gillian Anderson for Thatcher please

How about Jamie Bell for Charles (he has the ears)? Nicholas Hoult would have been good too, but he's too Hollywood now I expect

Young Camilla... How about Poppy Delevigne?

As an aside, I would love for Amanda Barrie to have a cameo in one of the Charles "coming of age" episodes

Ruffian · 19/01/2018 18:54

Rufus Sewell was mentioned a few pages back - think he'd be good for Armstrong-Jones.

Can see Bettany as Philip, his face isn't strong enough. Iain Glen or Christopher Eccleston sound much better bet.

CoolCarrie · 19/01/2018 19:16

Bear in mind it’s easier to make someone look older than younger on the tv.

southeastdweller · 19/01/2018 19:27

Baz is saying season 3 won’t be on until autumn 2019 Sad
