Anyone watching?

OP posts:
HoosierDaddy · 08/02/2018 23:17

Brings you right back, doesn't it? Felt really sad tonight, thought the ending really captured the teenage fun and angst we were having at the time, yet a reminder of Omagh and other awful days.

Love the show though! "She's our dick"

IPokeBadgers · 08/02/2018 23:20

Christ that got me. Really feel a bit shaken after that ending, very well done. Was a 90s schoolgirl in NI and that was just so spot on. All the daftness of silly times with your mates, stupid annoyances but knowing that if anyone spoke against anyone in your wee tribe you would defend them to the hilt. And all that teenaged innocence and self absorption bubble that would quite often get burst when you got home and saw the latest shite on the news. And not really understanding it but just wanting it to stop. For people to live together and not spend all that time and effort trying to kill each other. I was part of the God squad for a lot of my time at school and so many times our CU meetings would be opened or closed with prayers about our country, for those who were injured or killed, their families, our politicians trying to negotiate ceasefires.....when you are young and powerless, even prayers to a probably fictional bloke in the sky make you feel like you are doing something. I hope with all my heart Northern Ireland never goes back to the dark days.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 08/02/2018 23:23

Ipoke yes, very many school mornings started with a class prayer for the most recent victims of a bombing or for the politicians to reach a solution.

CandyYumYum · 08/02/2018 23:24

Let's hope Gove and his chums don't get their way and see the demise of the GFA.

MrsFrTedCrilly · 08/02/2018 23:26

IPokeBadgers you’ve put that beautifully

IPokeBadgers · 08/02/2018 23:28

I know NI still has a fuck tonne of problems and shit that goes on, but it is better than it was. Long may that continue....young people shouldn't have to worry about things like The Troubles.

eyestightshut · 08/02/2018 23:29

Incredible writing. Watching the parents stand round watching the TV and remembering the stomach drop as the news of another
bomb was announced. It has had me in floods of tears. I think the striking of this series is perfect - a good reminder to the people of what we are trying to move on from, and maybe a kick up the area to those at Storming to remember what they are meant to be working to get away from .

Mumguiltisabitch · 08/02/2018 23:30

Spot on ipoke

iheartmichellemallon · 08/02/2018 23:34

That was another fantastic episode - crying my eyes out at the end. So poignant - loved it.

IPokeBadgers · 08/02/2018 23:34

So poignant as well that the writers chose The Cranberries to open and close the series 😢

Hardwickwhite · 08/02/2018 23:42

That was just brilliant.

jennymount · 09/02/2018 00:03

I thoroughly enjoyed tonight's episode- but I thought they ripped off Little Miss Sunshine a bit with everyone joining in the dance routine on stage.

Also loved "I don't really believe in lesbians..." - just how I felt after an old classmate (in NI) came out! To the teenage mind, if you've never met one, they can't be real. Grin

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 09/02/2018 00:08

I remember a new girl joined our school in 4th year and caused a bit of trouble with sketchy behaviour. One of the things she was famous for was being caught by the very strict VP kissing another girl on the sponsored walk Grin none of us believed they were real lesbians as we didn’t know any other lesbians. We were convinced they just did it for attention. Both girls parents were called in to school over it Hmm Grin

BitOfFun · 09/02/2018 00:12

A really moving ending- it reminded me a little of the famous end to Blackadder Goes Forth. I may have shed a little tear.

Olddear · 09/02/2018 08:55

Just watched this on catch up.... So moving. The dancing schoolgirls and the adults watching the news......I actually had tears running down my face.

Elendon · 09/02/2018 09:09

Snap Olddear I too shed a few tears and have just finished watching it on catch up. So poignant.

Plus everything ipoke said.

So glad a second series has been commissioned.

awaynboilyurheid · 09/02/2018 09:15

Loved this too , such a great series some real gems in the script and so funny too I loved the one where the girl from the chernobyl incident came over and she told them she didn't like it told them you all fight but you are all the same, you are fighting and killing each other over some small points and they stand there with their mouths open as if the penny has dropped! funny and poignant at the same time!
then the smallest girl , I've forgotten her name says She's right! and wears a union jack t shirt to the disco!

Wish they would make a series in Glasgow showing that the schools are divided into Catholic or Protestant schools thanks to Glasgow city council Angry

MrsJayy · 09/02/2018 10:26

Aww Claire the wee lesbian Grin I have loved every minute of this series it has been a gem the end kinda hit you I might have had a bit of a cry.I think it has been picked up for a second series yaay

MargoLovebutter · 09/02/2018 11:20

Superb show. Just loved how they captured all the usual teenage angst, along with all the wider political & violent mayhem of the time.

I went to a convent school, had an Irish mum and spent every long summer holiday in Ireland with all the family there. I obviously sounded English and whenever we went anywhere my cousins would always apologise for me in advance. When things were really bad & there were protests going on, I'd be told to keep my mouth shut and not speak at all, until we got past whatever was going on. I felt like James, endlessly bewildered.

Long may peace continue, and as another OP said, whilst there are still a shit tonne of problems in NI, it has come a long way.

Loonoon · 09/02/2018 14:14

That ending was brilliant and made me cry as much as the rest of it made me laugh.. A friend grew up in Belfast during the Troubles and she says it’s all very familiar.

treaclesoda · 09/02/2018 14:26

I've just watched the last episode, got a bit of a tear in my eye. That's how life was.

When I was at school someone who obviously didn't fancy whatever lesson they had after lunch used the school payphone to phone the police saying there was a bomb at our school. It obviously didn't occur to them that the call could be traced Grin

BlindLemonAlley · 09/02/2018 14:43

Brilliant episode, clever, funny and poignant. The ending totally got me and took me right back to those awful days. I have been watching with my teen DC who love the characters but it’s also an insight into NI and the troubles that they can relate to.

k2p2k2tog · 09/02/2018 14:46

Just watched the whole thing on catch up and loved it.

I didn't grow up in NI but remember those times vividly, travelling through NI on the way to relatives in the south. Also have visited many times since. I didn't have an issue with the accents at all - the only one was the lady who worked in the chippie, she was a bit full on.

Favourite characters were Orla, Clare and the headteacher Nun. And the ending made me cry. Such sad times.

kalapattar · 09/02/2018 17:57

That was a fantastic ending - just the juxtaposition between a group of carefree teenagers and the reality of the troubles at the same time.

Unexpected - but a poignant reminder of the reality of life back then and how important it is to maintain the peace.

1haudyerwheesht · 09/02/2018 18:09

@awaynboilyurheid - it's not just Glasgow City Council, it's every Scottish council Sad
